Name Mangler 2.0 (Mac OS X)

App won't display GUI, so I can't use app.

Can't view app's GUI. Activity Monitor shows that app is present. App icon shows in Dock. After I read a positive review in May '08 issue of Macworld, I downloaded freeware app to try. Would be worth paying for if I could get app to work. Have killed and restarted app many times. Haven't rebooted (out of principle) yet. Uninstalled app (w/ CleanApp) and then reinstalled a newly downloaded .dmg from developer's Website. Still no luck w/ GUI appearing. I'll give it one more try whenever I reboot the next time. Using Leopard 10.5.1 on PPC. [alert admin]

Zooom 2.0.5 (Mac OS X)

Like Zooom a lot. A few apps Zooom doesn't seem to work w/.

Also like Zooom very much. How did I live w/o it? (chorusing other feedback). Valuable the same way SideTrack is. Using OS X 10.5.1 on a PowerBook. Zooom's way of using more of a gestural motion for resizing & moving windows w/o looking for a specific spot on a window w/ a mouse/trackpad will quickly pay for Zooom. Why? Because of less repetitive motion wear & tear on my body. See freeware, WindowDragon, mentioned as an alternative. However I'm leery of haxies such as Unsanity's APE, which is required; haxies have sometimes created anomalies in my OS. xPad: I can't resize docs by dragging the mouse inside the window; still have to grab the window's corner. Oxford American Dictionary widget: Zooom isn't able to resize. Have to drag the corner of widget. Works well w/ TextEdit, Finder, Safari, Firefox & VLC. Safari: One of Zooom's default keyboard cmd, Cmd + Shift, interferes w/ Safari's keyboard command to open a link in new tab. So I had to change Zooom's default Move cmd in Prefs. Photoshop CS: Can move images around w/ Zooom but when resizing window of opened image, window grows larger but image does not increase in size. Didn't take time to check if Zooom's keyboard resize cmd mirrored one of Photoshop's bazillion keyboard commands? [alert admin]

Path Finder 4.8.3 (Mac OS X)

Finder can open videos, pics, docs full-screen w/o open app

Using Leopard 10.5.1 Just started playing w/ Pathfinder. Was disappointed that Cmd + Opt + y will not launch text file, video, or image full-screen w/o opening accompanying app as Finder can do. This Finder file launching feature is pretty slick and fast. Couldn't see anything in Path Finder's preferences to activate this feature. Pathfinder does visually represent directory structure more elegantly in many ways. Like the way Path Finder segregates folders together separate from individual files in a directory. Finder's small thumbnail images beside file name can be helpful at times which I don't think is a Pathfinder feature? Caveat: this is IMHO as I just downloaded Pathfinder today. [alert admin]

NetNewsWire 3.1b31 (Mac OS X)

Activation wizard doesn't recognize your account & license #

I was having problems entering my license # for NNW v. 3.1b31. Had a pre-existing account for 1-year subscription. Did a clean wipe of hard drive to install Leopard & downloaded current version of NNW. After entering username & password from pre-existing account, NNW's activation wizard stated that no record of my account was found. My trial period of NNW v. 3.1b31 was almost up & app wouldn't accept my license #. Remembering my past experiences (June '07) where NNW provided excellent support services for same problem on older version... I tried emptying the Web cache (not sure if that option was in earlier versions?) from the NNW menu (right beneath the Preferences menu). Voila! I'm able to register the license # for the app. Safari is my default browser for NNW; I didn't rigorously test whether having Safari's cookies activated was part of the activation success or not. I keep cookies turned off & deleted as much as possible. Love the NNW app! Industrial-strength RSS reader as I'm a heavy feedster... the Find function is worth the subscription. Don't believe Lite versions don't have Find function. Version 3 is much more stable. Occasionally NNW 2. would crash when I was scrolling my 1500 feeds from many del.icio.us tags. No crashes in v. 3. Would like clearer instructions when activation wizard won't accept your info... such as "Try emptying the NNW Web cache." [alert admin]

NetNewsWire 2.1.1 (Mac OS X)

Enable browser cookies to enter activation registration #

Like the wide-screen view w/ 3 columns for RSS feeds. Use RSS feeds extensively. Rc’vd prompt technical assistance when suddenly my registration # mysteriously wouldn’t work. Browser cookies have to be enabled when logging registration # within NNW. Apparently, Newsgator NNW rechecks reg. # about once a wk. Repeatedly rc’vd error message trying to re-register: “We’re sorry but we cannot locate this user account information. Please check the information you entered and try again. If you continue to have difficulties please contact technical support at support@newsgator.com.” Contacted tech support. Tech assistance promptly suggested screenshots of log-in process, which I sent them. They responded quickly in 1.5 days w/ correct CAUSE & subsequent WORKAROUND: “This is a problem with the wizard losing session state. This is usually caused by cookies being turned off in Safari. Since NetNewsWire uses Apple Webkit - the same engine as Safari - it shares security settings.” I suggest that notification of “cookies enabled to log-in” for activation process would be helpful. FYI: actual price is $29.95 not $24.95. [alert admin]
