NetRestore 3.3.6 (Mac OS X)

Mike has made my job easier

For the past 4+ years, Mike has made my job easier with his NetRestore software. NetRestore allows me to easily clone computers in order to restore and when I update computers, I create one image (using NetRestore Helper) and send it to the others. I figured it all out using Mike's documentation and online lab deployment information. When I get a new computer for the lab or a faculty Macintosh, I boot from an external disk, erase and partition the internal hard drive. I create two partitions, consisting of one small one with just enough space for a small basic operating system and one with the rest of the drive. The small drive is the emergency restore system. When I have a problem computer or a major updated image, I boot of the small partition and use NetRestore to point to the location with the image I created with NetRestore Helper as the source and send it to the larger partition. NetRestore makes it possible to easily re-image the lab computers before every semester. This product has made for a better running and more consistently updated lab. Most likely it has also kept me at my job longer than I would have stayed without this software. I called "Ease of Use" 4 out of 5. It took me a while to learn the things it can do completely on my own. I really would have just called everything 5 out of 5, but you might not have believed me, right? I use expensive commercial software for doing the same thing on my windows computers. It is great software, but you know what? Adding NetRestore to Apple's Remote Desktop software makes just as good a product for the Apple side. [alert admin]

VersionTracker Pro 3.6.1 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

Windows version mediocre to poor

I have both Windows and Macintosh computers and have used Version Tracker for 3 years. If the Apple version of VersionTracker was equal to the Windows version, I would never have renewed. With the Apple version, I can choose which downoad I want easily. It is also easier to use. For example, if I have version 1.05 of something and since that version there have been several updates such as: 1.06 + 1.065 + 1.07a + 1.07b + 1.07 ----- I can choose 1.065 if I've heard bad things about the newer update or any version up to the newest. There may be a way to do this with the Windows version, but it sure isn't easy to use and user friendly. I've been waiting for it to improve for quite a while. Still waiting....... **** This rating is based on the Windows version of Version Tracker only. [alert admin]

AppleWorks X 6.2.9 (Mac OS X)

6.2.9 a Disaster

I told my college students that AppleWorks is one of the best software packages ever, but with 6.2.9 I can't do that. Every Apple on campus runs like a slug after the upgrade. I tried to run the 6.2.9, but it (of course) tells me I already have a newer version. Why hasn't Apple pulled this update? Are they going to have AppleWorks die? If you have AppleWorks running well prior to 6.2.9, you might want to try on one machine for a while first before updating all. [alert admin]
