Brightness Control 1.0.4 (Mac OS X)
I've used BC for years, and it has helped. But, I just discovered an app and I gotta say Shades is the only way to go. Ever notice in BC when you lower the brightness you also lose contrast? It gets all hazy and makes me think I have cataracts! Also, when you are done adjusting with BC you have to either minimize the window, or hide the app altogether. Shades doesn't mess with your contrast, and has a handy menu-bar control that's very accessible and gets out of your way by itself. Sorry BC, but you haven't made any progress and now the real deal is here. [alert admin]

Shades 1.1.5r1 (Mac OS X)
I can't believe I didn't know about this app until now! I've been using Brightness Control and I gotta say, Shades is much better. It maintains your contrast level. Why BC can't do this I have no idea, but BC gets all hazy as you dim with it. Shades also has a handy menu-bar control which is much better than BC's window you have to minimize, or hide the app altogether... lame lame lame!! Shades is the only game in town. [alert admin]

Agreed. Multiple alarms would be great. [alert admin]

Watch It 1.3 (Mac OS X)
This is still not a universal binary I think. Takes forever to load such a simple app. [alert admin]

Microsoft Messenger 6.0.1 (Mac OS X)
I launched MS Messenger today to see if I could change my password, but it wouldn't let me (big surprise). It sent me to some url that wouldn't load. Anyway, the program alerted me that an update was available, so I went ahead and downloaded it thinking "hey, maybe it will let me change my password now." When the download was finished, there was a .bin file sitting on my desktop. So I mounted it, and what was inside?? An .aiff SONG called "1 Will and Testement" of all things. Um, this didn't look to me like a new version of MSN. Suffice to say I did NOT play the track and quickly unmounted the disk image, and trashed the .bin file. I am leaving MSN altogether (yes, even in Adium). There are other, safer, alternatives to corrupt & compromised. [alert admin]

BitTorrent 4.27.1 (Mac OS X)
I see a lot of negative comments for this, however, I have compared this to the other ones and... A) I can actually begin a download B) I find enough seeders C) I get decent speeds D) I finish my downloads ...the same cannot be said about the competition, and yes, I've tried them all. [alert admin]

File Synchronization 1.4 (Mac OS X)
So far so good. Better than others I tried. More customizable automation on a per-event level basis would be nice. [alert admin]

SyncIt 1.0b1 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
I tried to sync folders over a network. Tested on a simple text document. When the text file was sync'd (copied) to the other folder it was empty. The original in fact had content (and was saved) so why did it copy the file, but not it's content? Not only that, I deleted the file from one folder and then I sync'd, instead of also deleting it, it just copied it back there. It doesn't delete. It just copies. Not helpful. [alert admin]

Adium X 0.89.1 (Mac OS X)
File transfers, while still slow, do work. Everything works great. A fine update, do not be scared off by 'doomsayers' :) later [alert admin]
