QuarkXPress 7.0b1 (Mac OS X)
I still prefer Quark's interface
I realize Quark has somewhat dropped the ball on getting their competitive versions to market. But even with all its quirks, even its tendency to crash when attempting something that causes it to crash (which I learn and avoid), I prefer it to In Design.
I think Adobe has fooled a lot of people. They lucked out that their apps still work in OS X. Contrary to popular belief, Photoshop CS2 is still a 32-bit application (and Adobe says so on their site.) Carbonization was supposed to be temporary, to enable developers to switch to the new platform with more ease... but Adobe, at least with Photoshop and Acrobat, fooled everyone into thinking they re-wrote their apps from the ground up... but they merely optimized aspects of them (calling to mind the coding attrocities they perpetrated with PageMaker, continually rolling over junk code into new versions).
At least give Quark the credit they deserve. As usual, each revision of their product is a rewrite from the ground up... this is what gave them the edge for so many years over PageMaker. Technically... that makes Version 6.0 really a version 1.0. I don't have the time to try this beta... Frankley... I would have liked to see a 6.5.1, 6.6, and 6.7.5, etc., before jumping to 7.0, but once they are ready for market, I'll gladly give them a go.
Consumer loyalty used to mean something. Can't you see that Adobe is the new enemy? They used to be the sharpest of the sharp... but now... they are as dull and lazy as Microsoft.

PithHelmet 2.6.2 (Mac OS X)
Worked great for a while... now, end of 2005, is having trouble. It won't load sites completely that have extensive css. They just load forever... get stuck... [alert admin]

I uninstalled the PithHelmet.bundle, and reinstalled PithHelmet, and the problems disappeared. I received some attention from the developer in trying to figure out the problem, which is appreciated (but, its still a mystery... its possible the installation of a M$ product may have corrupted the bundle... but not sure... anyway,,, the unsintall/reinstall solved the problem). This software rules.

yeah, worked great in Panther... loved it. 3.2 Optimized for Tiger? Guess again... optimized to do nothing at all. Doesn't break anything, just doesn't work whatsoever.... :(
