BusyCal 1.0b10 (Mac OS X)
This is a replacement (what an understatement!) for iCal written by the same folks who ORIGINALLY (not recently) wrote Now-Up-To-Date-Contact. It is an elegant calendar that syncs across LANs, Google Calendar, and mobile phones. It's everything iCal should be and more! And, although it's still in beta, the quality is better than some released apps I've used. [alert admin]

DoubleTake 2.2b17 (Mac OS X)
I've used (and continue to use): 1. Calico 2. Hugin 3. DoubleTake 4. The "panorama" feature of Photoshop Elements 6 What I find is that none of these work well with all of my panos. Each program seems to hiccup on a different kind of issue. By having several in my hip pocket, I can almost always get a decent stitch with one of these. DoubleTake is among the easiest to use of all of these. When it works, it's very fast and very effective. [alert admin]

HoudahSpot 2.2 (Mac OS X)
Great front end for Spotlight! ![]()

I absolutely hate the change in Spotlight from Tiger to Leopard! Since there is no way to change the default search, we're now stuck with a default search of file names AND content, ordered by "last opened" date, and excluding files/folders I don't want to exclude. That is, we were stuck until Houdahspot came along. Now we can customize our default search as we wish, create & save search templates. HS is everything Spotlight ought to have been! [alert admin]

Jungle Disk 2.01a (Mac OS X)
I've been using JD since January, 2008, and just upgraded to version 2. JD is a very easy to use, inexpensive offsite backup service. It actually uses Amazon S3, and JD is a front end. Version 2 is a nice update. It looks much more "mac like," and the new organization is easier and more intuitive. I don't use JD to backup EVERYTHING I have, because that would get a bit pricey, but for nice peace of mind for essential files, JD is hard to beat. [alert admin]

Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 (Mac OS X)
Adobe continues to bring good features over from the "big brother" Photoshop when it updates Elements. Version 6 has a variety of improvements, including bringing curves to PSE for the first time. While the basic functionality may be similar to previous versions, this version is easier to use, has a variety of modes (from "guided" to "you do what you want"). The upgrade price is always a bit steep, but worth it for me! The included help files are also much improved. [alert admin]

PTHPasteboard PRO 4.2.5 (Mac OS X)
I have tried a variety of "clipboard extenders" that keep a stack of previously used items in the clipboard. All of them were found wanting except PTH pasteboard! I couldn't live without this software, and use it every day, multiple times. [alert admin]

PDFLab 2.0.3r2 (Mac OS X)
Great product...watermarking doesn't work
I've really enjoyed using this product. It is incredibly easy to use and is quite comprehensive in it's features. Unfortunately, one feature I can't get to work is the watermarking feature. Neither text or image watermarks seem to show up. [alert admin]

JAlbum 6.1.4 (Mac OS X)
I have tried many photo album generators, and JAlbum is simply one of the best. It is easy to use (and is completely cross platform, running on Mac OS X, Windows, Linux, and others!) and has a large installed user base. It is actively supported, maintained, and developed by a full-time programmer. An active user forum exists. [alert admin]

Informator 1.9.1 (Mac OS X)
Doesn't seem to work under Tiger
Hangs at splashscreen with 10.4.1. Therefore, no basis for rating. [alert admin]

Text Wielder 1.0b5 (Mac OS X)
Whenever I try to access any of the Text Wielder services, it always bombs with a "cannot open...." message (it's trying to open the Text Wilder app). Permissions for the file seem to be correct (read & write). I don't feel I can honestly rate the product until it works for me. It obviously works for others...(I'm running 10.4.1) [alert admin]

Agreed. While it may be correct that the bulk of the IT world uses English and the exposure for the software and the developer would be broader if documentation included English, the tone of the original statement seemed a bit harsh. I look at it more this way: as a native English speaker I feel so fortunate that the software world speaks my language rather than forcing me to use a language I'm…

Very nice idea but didn't work for me
I've never had any freeze or other "it doesn't work" issues with DF. As for price/value, that's in the eyes of the beholder! For me, just the ability to change the save folder by clicking on the Finder window that's behind the save dialog box rather than navigating using the drop down menu is worth a lot to me! I must use it a dozen times a day just for this purpose.

"it works" is wrong, coz work is to be done w/o errors
I, too, use WSX on various OS 10.3.x machines, and it works flawlessly. I've never had a problem with it, and I use it all the time.

Never so many Mac user not knowing how to install an App
I, too, have installed it on many macs. Even on my fastest mac (G4/867 dual), the installer appears to "hang" for a while, but patience is rewarded! Just let it finish.

This is in reply to the previous, most helpful, comment. (1) You can get a (wired) router for a lot less than $70! Linksys and DLink are two routers I've either had success with or have heard good things about. (2) While DHCP is easier to set up (it "just works"), I find I can only connect my Mac to my PC via typing in the IP address...I can't get the "computer name" to…

To call any haxie "very dangerous" is unduly alarmist. I have used a variety of haxies with OS X since OS 10.1.x (now up to 10.3.1) and have not had any problems. As with anything that modifies the system (remember OS 9 extensions?), there is certainly the possibility of a conflict that causes a problem. But one shouldn't have to reinstall the system. Just uninstall the haxie (or APE)!
