Measuring Cup 1.2.3 (Mac OS X)

This is really good

Just downloaded this for my daughter and after trying it out, got it for myself too. It is really easy to use and you can even put a picture of your completed item (mine was my mom's cookies). Anyway, this is really simple and easy, and works like iTunes. Found a useful undocumented feature: to make sub lists (like Frosting) I just typed in Frosting as a line, then the first ingredient as the next line. Then drag that ingredient over "Frosting" and it becomes a sub element. I like that better than the sub menus that are provided. I was also able to copy and paste multiple lines simultaneously from within the program. This is a really slick program, especially considering it is free. I haven't used it long enough to know how well it holds up, but so far so good. Also, there is a help menu that is very useful. Have not used support so no idea how that is. I tried to print a recipe and it prints in a very logical and readable way. Highly recommended. [alert admin]

TubeTV 0.9.2 (Mac OS X)

Beware, not freeware

The program is listed as freeware, but when you try to use it it says you can only load 3 videos and then it worn't work unless you get a serial number that costs $15. It looks simple, but I had problems loading the YouTube movies, didn't even get one right and it said I couldn't use it anymore. Looks appealing, but for me was a complete waste of time. FitnessBrain 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Tried Demo Version: Disappointing

Good idea but lots of problems get in the way of productivity. Searching for Rasin Bread, it wouln't bring it up, had to scroll through long lists to find what I was looking for. Also scroll only has grayed out arrows, no slider. Closing some windows non-standard, have to hit button, no red close button available. Main window looks nice, but program works like a PC. Checked this because my daughter's class uses Diet Analysis + and after version 2.0 they don't have a Mac Version. Used Version 2.1 in PC, but very PC like, ugly and confusing. However it will make food pyramids, graphic bar charts, etc. I could not find a way to do that in FitnessBrain. Tried to find Kellog's Special K, and it could not find it on search for "special" because they abbriviated it. Found after lots and lots of scrolling. Also in exercise if you type "Dance" nothing comes up. But if you scroll through options it is there. Search is too dumb. (PS in Dance it is old styles, no hip hop). Also, when you open a window for new food or exercise, there is an asterisk there. Don't know what that is for... looks like a DOS prompt! Recommendations: 1. Make search so it finds words even in middle of string. 2. Make search so it can go in all categories. Now you have to be in the right one, and didn't know if crackers were under breads or snacks. Could make an "All" option in the dropdown list. 3. Add to lists. For example there was no Quiche, or saltine crackers WITH normal salt 4. Update exercises to reflect newer dances 5. Add sliders to scroll windows 6. Add summary plots (e.g. bar charts, pie carts, pyramid charts) and tables 7. Make export more friendly and mac standard. Offer options, not a blank box to type something into. Sorry, but would not recommend it without most of these enhancements. [alert admin]

Ogg Vorbis QuickTime Component 1.0d8 (Mac OS X)

Makes .ogg files work with QT and iTunes

Now iTunes can play .ogg files! I am so happy. I didn't even know what .ogg files were, but only that I couldn't play them until I installed this little baby. Instructions easy. Note, did need to reboot computer after installing it. Thank you, thank you thank you. [alert admin]

VLC media player 0.7.2 (Mac OS X)

It is simple, easy and it works

I have been trying to find a fast, easy Video CD player for Mac OS X. After reading comments on the new MacVCD, which looked too controlled, there were comments saying VLC Media Player and MPlayer were better. So I downloaded and tried both. On an old Green iBook both programs opend ok and both had a nice interface. However, VLC Media Player was easier to use, since it had the Disk Open option, so I just pick the Video CD I want to play and it goes to the right files. On MPlayer, I had to search around folders for files that would play, which was too much hassle. VLC Media Player is the easiest one I could find that works. MacVCD may be good but the restrictions are so draconian, I don't want to bother. I highly recommend VLC Media Player. Brosed [alert admin]

MPlayer OS X 2.0b8r2 (Mac OS X)

VCD Player appreciated, need it easier though

I have been trying to find a fast, easy Video CD player for Mac OS X. After reading comments on the new MacVCD, which looked too controlled, there was a comment saying this MPlayer was better. So I downloaded and tried it out. It opened fine (I was using this on an old Green iBook). To play the Video CD I was hoping it could recognize it and I just hit a button, but it wasn't that simple. I had to search through all of the folders on the cd to find files and then open one that had some video. When I did that it ran it fine. However, this was too hard, since I was doing this for my daughter, so I tried another program recommeded on the MacVCD page by VLC. That one worked easily and did have a way to open Disk, which made it much easier. Both VLC and MPlayer had nice interfaces. Brosed [alert admin]
