EasyFind 4.5 (Mac OS X)

Awesome Programming...

Been using the PowerPC version and discovered it has been updated to Universal. The PowerPC version was fast ( running Rosetta ) on my Intel iMac, but **screams** as a native binary. I just did a wildcard search ( *pdfc* ) ---meaning any titel with pdfc in it and it scanned all the files on my 1TB hard drive in a few seconds and found everything. Like many folks, I typically use Spotlight first but when it couldn't find any matching files, EasyFind found them. Works great for finding those files left behind when uninstalling software. All this without an index and without the time to create an index, plus it is free. Clearly, this is lost leader software but these developers deserve kudos for what they've done. [alert admin]

LoginControl 2.0 (Mac OS X)

This function can be done easily with Apple's Property List Editor

This function can done directly using Apple's Property List Editor ( included free with developer tools ). It is easy, relatively risk free ( assuming you make a backup of the file first ). Just go to your home folder/library/preferences/ and open the file named 'com.apple.loginitems' ( possibly make a Finder - option drag - desktop copy first ). Click the triangles next to ‘SessionItems‘ and ‘CustomListItems‘ to see their subitems. Click the triangles next to ‘Item 1‘, ‘Item 2‘, etc. until you find the entry that you want to move. Item 1 gets loaded first, item 2 loaded second etc. Move the mouse pointer to the left of the Item’s triangle, then drag the entry higher or lower in the list. Drop the entry INBETWEEN two other ‘Item‘ entries and then save with Command-S. Note: LoginControl does provide additional features such as lists of startup items which might make the product worth the shareware fee for some users. [alert admin]

Hoyle Puzzle & Board Games 1.0 (Mac OS X)

60 minute demo - not shareware

[1] with over 25 games to play, a 60 minute demo is inadequate time to evaluate. [2] Price of $19.95 is reasonable [3] Download size of approximately 600+ megabytes requires a fast connection or a lot of patience. [4] So far I've evaluated chess and it has some annoying qualities. Menus are non-standard and so searching is required to find the option needed. It isn't easy to switch colors. Apparently, it is necessary to just quit the application and restart. Several more what I would call quirky behavior for a Mac application [5] This might be a good deal but with only enough time to evaluate one or two games I doubt I will buy. [alert admin]

Absolute Backgammon 5.3.8 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Awesome Backgammon Game - worth more than $25

There are clearly years of hard work in this product to bring it to this level. The price is more than fair. Developers find it difficult to achieve a financial break-even point in this very competitive market place where some companies employee teams of programmers. The fact that David brought this to market in this environment is impressive, and anyone with development background knows this to be true. The game is very playable, offers a strong computer opponent ( unless you are expert yourself and even then it provides a strong challenge ), and will provide many hours ( possibly years) of enjoyment. For $25 I can hardly resist the bargain. I would spend that much money for an afternoon of baseball. I'm sure the developer will continue to work and improve this product as his history of upgrades speaks for itself. [alert admin]

Not universal

The executable is PowerPC only, so be prepared to run in emulation under Rosetta. [alert admin]

NeoOffice 2.0 Aqua Beta 3 (Mac OS X)

Better but still not quite the equal of Excel 10.1.6

Overall, a good product but it has some drawbacks. Note: I'm only evaluating the spreadsheet portion of the product and not the others. First, it is slow (it runs native on my PowerMac G5 dual 2.3 GHz, 4GB Ram) and is noticeably sluggish compared to Excel (I ran the same spreasheet side-by-side in both apps). Resource consumption (as viewed in Activity Monitor) is approximately a 10x increase over Excel, so that might account for some of the sluggishness. Startup time is the worst. Using after it is started is acceptable but not zippy like Excel. Slower machines than mine (i.e. G3, G4) might be unacceptably slow. Second, some convenience features found in Excel (which if you enter a lot of data matter), are missing. The cell type ahead feature in Excel provides a drop down list of all items that match what has been typed. There is no list in N.O. This slows down my data entry compared to Excel. On the positive side the .ods files created by N.O. are up to 4 times smaller than an Excel file. This is probably due to the meta data saving by Excel. Overall, a great feature set. Even though price is always a purchasing factor, it is a one-time saving. Performance issues linger on. Since I use Excel daily (and have for years), I'm not yet willing to sacrifice convenience. SteamTRAIN 2.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Awesome Steamtrain simulator

Version 2 adds incredible graphics courtesy of OpenGL. Night views and very realistic smoke, bi-directional trains and more. As a developer I appreciate the major effort it takes to upgrade to OpenGL, so this relatively short delivery of OpenGL says a lot about the developer's skill and *commitment* to enhancing this product. This product, IMO, is easily worth $40 or more. It is unique. Sure, there are other train sims, but not with the details and feel of SteamTRAIN. The developer is responsive to user requests and seriously considers all enhancement requests. This customer service alone is worth my registration fee. I can't buy this kind of service from the large software companies. Kudos to this developer for a wonderful product delivered at a reasonable price. [alert admin]

FutureBASIC 4.0r3 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

The Best BASIC and best language for Mac applications

This is easily the best language I've ever used. It has all the modern constructs (Case statements, do until, while, for loops). It also borrows some items from other languages like C incrementors/decrementors ( i++ , i-- etc.) while still providing easy access to traditional BASIC verbs such as MID$, LEFT$, RIGHT$ etc. It is a very open architecture/IDE. There is full toolbox access and anything not defined can be added by the programmer. Did I mention how easy to use the IDE is? WOW! Other competitors are copying it. Code is indented to line up the start/end of Whiles, Ifs, and all other structured constructs just the way you want it. Local functions all support local and global variables and varibles can be passed by address or value. Recursive calls are fully supported. Arrays can be pre-sized or dynamically sized at run time depending on data needs. Want to build your windows in Interface Builder and use them in FB? That is possible too but it is easier to build them with FB and FB tools (see The Window Maker). Staz and this IDE have been around since the beginning of Macs, so everything is solid---unlike some competitors. FB builds small applications with tight fast code. My own application compiles to ~500k and this is 10 integrated functions all of which are complex. Writing even a "hello world" (i.e. does nothing significant) program in the competing BASIC ~ two megabyte applications. Size is not significant for disk space but what is all that other code doing? Support is excellent both from Staz and the listserv. If OOP with Objective C looks overwhelming, and you want something that looks like the procedural C or Pascal you used to use, this is worth a close look. [alert admin]

Nice Butt

"Nice, but I still like BitPal" BitPal is a decent product but has two current drawbacks: (1) Doesn't run natively on Intel Macs - only via Rosetta emulation (2) Mac product hasn't been updated in over 3 years, so its future is in doubt.

Combining PDFs can be done in Automator easily for FREE

While this might be a worthy product, folks (like Kevin) only needing to combine pdfs can create an automator workflow at no cost. Just do a google search on "automator action combine pdf" then go to the MacWorld article by Rob Griffiths. Once created, the workflow is available from the finder as a contextual menu (Control-click). I use this every day to combine my professional pdf docs for my clients.

Intuitive and simple but is there

"Any chance this program makes it as a universal binary for intel macs?" A test universal binary of CCN X has been created. A lot of work remains because the internals need to be changed. However, with the milestone achieved, I'm hoping for delivery of a UB version this year (2007). I'd be happy to answer any other questions on this topic via email for those that are interested

Nice But - reply

"This app didn't have a make feel to it" The app is currently undergoing an internal redesign (with external in the foreseeable future), so any input is welcome. I don't understand the comment as written (and assume there is a typo in it), so please elaborate (you are welcome to send me email directly ccnx@cox.net). TIA----Brian S.

Response to comments from developer

"Any chance this program makes it as a universal binary for intel macs?" Yes, there will be a universal app (UB) at some point, but not in the immediate future. See following responses. "I'm sure it works in Rosetta but in the future I'd rather not emulate." Actually, it is faster under Rosetta than running native on a dual G4 PM. CCN X is quite effiecient, so using Rosetta should have no impact on user's performance. Until we…

Idiot

The developer has indeed posted a note regarding the incompatibility with Tiger. This was my mistake and I earned the scathing comment. My apologies. Again, the product is great, just not working in Tiger. As a developer myself, I know the trials of developing. Even as an X beta tester, the target is moving and last minute bugs are sure to bite every developer. Even with that challenge, many developers do their best to…
