1Password 2.9.22 (Mac OS X)
Developer needs to get with it . . .
What's new with *this* version? Why should I "update?" Almost every other developer specifies *what* (exactly) is "new" with a given update. It would be nice if *this* developer did the same. Guess I'll skip *this* update. [alert admin]

Apple iTunes 9.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Genius has got to be the most over-rated and *useless* feature ever to grace an Apple computer. Really. I don't know who would really be impressed. Period. It just isn't worth any of my time and energy. Yes, I'm a music fan. Yes, I'm open-minded. Yes, it sounded good --- the concept and idea. But, when it comes right down to it --- where the "rubber meets the road" --- Genius is an idiot. If you're easily impressed and have relatively "Simpleton" tastes when it comes to music, you just might find something useful about it. I tried it. It's now permanently turned off in Preferences and there is no sign of it on *my* computer except for the wasted space the Code Bloat takes up on my HDD. Resource and Bandwidth Hog. Time waster. 8.2.1 was leaner and meaner and *more* functional. iTunes is becoming the WIndows of media programs. [alert admin]

SleepLess 2.6.3 (Mac OS X)
Something similar . . . for FREE
Not sure if it works with Leopard, but if you are *not* obsessed with running your *laptop* with its lid *closed* (can't imagine too many situations where that would be *really* advantageous!), Caffeine can keep your computer from going to sleep without changing any settings . . . *no* cluttering of Dock, and only *one* click. Oh, did I mention you'd save almost 10 dollars over Sleepless because Caffeine is FREE? I've been using it for years with Tiger and it works flawlessly. No "floating palette" thingy. No problem --- at least not for me. IF all you need is simply something to keep your computer from going to sleep and want "one click" activation/deactivation and do *not* want to spend $9.50, Caffeine is a *solid* option. Just checked the site. Version 1.1 is for Leopard. 1.0.4 is for Tiger. Both are small (less than 300k) files to download. It just works. [alert admin]

Sharpshooter 1.1b2 (Mac OS X)
I've been using the *free* [beta] version for over a year on a *very* regular basis. Love it. It works . . . with 10.4.11 (PPC) flawlessly. Did I mention that it [version 0.6.1b is, er, *was* free? I'll send you the 1.4 MB dmg file if you want . . . brian dot ansorge at gee mail dot com [alert admin]

Mozilla Firefox 3.0.11 (Mac OS X)
I'm hardly a "power user." Yet, it seems the relatively limited demands I place on my browsers (I use Safari, iCab, Opera, Camino, OmniWeb, and Firefox) consistently seem to bring down ("crash") Firefox and none of the others. I can't remember the last time any of my *other* browsers crashed. I can't remember the last version of Firefox that was actually stable and didn't crash at least once (or twice) a day. And, talk about a Resource hog! Firefox frequently ends up using 50% or more of my CPU and (depending on how long it's been since it last crashed) up to 300 MB or more of Real Memory. Inexcusable. Even for F/OSS. I'd give up on Firefox and use other browsers exclusively, except that I have grown accustomed to many Add-ons that simply aren't available (or haven't been replicated, yet) in other browsers. Amnesty Singles 1.5 (Mac OS X)
Same Effect --- but Free ! ! !
If all you want to do (or need) is to "free" widgets from their Dashboard [only] environment, you can do this for *free* by enabling Dashboard "developer mode." Use Terminal, or (if mucking about with Terminal intimidates you) doing so with "Onyx" (still free, I think) or "MacPilot" (not free, but can be used in Demo mode). I've done this myself with several Widgets that I have now give permanent homes on the Desktop of my new, big monitor! As far as "stand-alone" applications, hmm, not sure what to tell you. For me, it's not an issue. The net effect is still the same; I get instant access to my favorite Widgets which *now* sit in plain view on the right side of my Desktop. World Clocks (two sons in faraway places while serving in the military), EasyEnvelopes, Timer, Translation and others --- all working as well as any so-called "stand-alone" applications. Except they're actually *Widgets* that I've *freed* from their normal environment --- for FREE! [alert admin]

Simple To Do 1.6.8 (Mac OS X)
But I found FileMaker Pro easier to figure out than this program --- talk about NONintuitive. And it crashed (10.4.11 with all updates and plenty memory and nothing else to blame) the first time I tried it after playing around with it for a while. Deleted. Cost is hard to beat. [alert admin]

GraphicConverter 6.2 (Mac OS X)
I've had a copy of GC for a long time; my version is an older one. Some how, some way, while using GC, I managed to get it to "crash." That's my special gift, maybe, crashing virtually anything that *can* be crashed. But, even though my copy of GC is an older version and it was on Sunday, I got a *personal* email from the Developer following up on the Crash Report that was generated and sent earlier in the day. Amazing. Talk about attentive and responsive! More than I can say for the developers for several other products (many commercial) that I have acquired over the years. [alert admin]

VersionTracker Pro 4.5 (Mac OS X)
The "Trial" scan was a total waste of time, as was the subsequent downloading of *another* copy of the installed to find out if the first miserable waste of time was a fluke. It wasn't. I ended up with the program running and a delightful dialogue box telling me that my "trial scan has shown" me "what applications need to be updated." Yeah, right. Maybe the actual (non-trial) version of this softward does something useful. The trial version didn't do shit. Waste of time. [alert admin]

Ahhh, how absolutely refreshing to see some comments that are obviously *not* posted by some [paid?] shills! Can you say "C-A-N-D-I-D"?

Every time I download the "latest & greatest" version of this highly touted (by "geeks," mostly, from what I can tell), I am very disappointed. IF that offends some people here. Oh Waaahhhhh. Grow up. Get a life. Whatever. I use *several* browsers on a fairly regular basis. Safari. Firefox. Camino. OmniWeb. Opera? The GUI is ugly. Pure and simple. No matter *which* "skin" is applied, so don't even go there. All my other browsers (even Shiira) look good…

Some times, "2 cents" isn't worth *anything*
You recommend "SiteSucker," but that product isn't anything close to Pandora, really. You haven't used Pandora, have you? I have, although not as a licensed user. However, using it even in UNlicensed mode demonstrates to me it's usefulness to those wanting to *glean* from the internet (zillions of potential sites) the graphics and such related/pertinent to any give key word or combination thereof. "SiteSucker" --- from the Developers *own* description --- doesn't do anything close. It…

The fact that every *other* browser *allows* for "eating your cake and having it too," should make it abundantly clear that *not* allowing for blank new tabs *and* being able to have a configurable "home" page accessible --- when *wanted* --- is the "narrow" approach. Your deciding that *everybody* should like things the way *you* do is "narrow" also, btw.

I keep downloading the latest and greatest (seems like weekly event) Opera. GUI still seems ugly by Camino standards (don't preach about the multitude of UGLY "skins"). Missing some features of Omniweb I find necessary. Doesn't support keychains like all the other browsers. Won't play with 1Password (which increasing numbers find essential). A deal breaker. Period. Too bad. Has potential. Better is always different. But different isn't always better. This *is* OS X. Until one browser…

Bookdog does more than just bark
I didn't realize just how many bookmarks I have until I used the trial version. Try it. If you don't like it, don't buy it. I bought it. I'm almost obsessive-compulsive about keeping things orgainzed (and up-to-date), so I appreciate Bookdog's many features. I found out I had almost 2,000 bookmarks. Some I visit frequently, others, not so often. With Bookdog's help, now I know that when I do go to a URL, it will "be there." Somebody…
