PiXel Check 1.2 (Mac OS X)
Still indispensible, still working with OS X 10.5.8 ![]()

What a simple, joyous tool! lt's free and, despite being several years old, it's working perfectly well on a 10.5.8 system (have not yet tried it on 10.6.x). Don't hesitate to download and use it to check for bad pixels, it's a winner. [alert admin]

Olympus DSS Player 7.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Caution, 7.x only supports newer Olympus devices
A caution before updating: be aware that the 7.x software does NOT support several older but still commonly used Olympus recorders/devices. From the 7.0.1 ReadMe file: "Note : DSS Player for MAC V7 does not support the following discontinued recorders DS-3000/2000/660/330/320/150/10, DM-1 and the RS-25 foot pedal. While direct recording is supported, Direct Recording in DSS LP mode and WMA fomat are not." On a test machine, I tried installing the software anyway just to see what would happen, and the 7.x software DID NOT work with either my DS-2200 or DS-2000 recorders, nor did it work with the RS-25 pedal--just like the ReadMe indicated. Very sad as these devices are not that old. [alert admin]

Mori 1.6.3 (Mac OS X)
Toolbar icons still missing in action
"Fixed #2278 wherein toolbar icons still were not appearing." Umm, I hate to tell you, but this is most definitely NOT fixed. Most toolbar icons are blank/invisible, both in the toolbar and in the "Customize Toolbar" window. Also, in the "About Mori" window, the application icon is likewise missing. FontCard 1.5 (Mac OS X)
If you are a visual artist or designer, you want FontCard. ![]()

I've been a fan and user of FontCard for over two years and I absolutely love it! I am a former graphic designer (20 years) and now filmmaker/editor (7 years) and I honestly can't imagine trying to do my creative design/text/titling work without the assistance of FontCard. Without FontCard, fonts are a horrible, non-WYSIWYG, non-visually ordered mess, completely unintuitive for graphic artists. With FontCard, fonts can be grouped by families with popout lists showing the individual fonts. This makes long fonts lists compact and logical. More importantly, (most of) the individual members of each font family can then be sorted by visual weight/style (the way a designer thinks), not just alphabetic order (the way a programmer thinks). This is WYSIWYG sorting the way it should be. I am excited about this new release (1.5) since it (finally) has fixed the partially odd behavior in QuarkXPress 7.2; QXP and FontCard now work correctly together. I am even more excited by the fact that I can FINALLY let FontCard handle my fonts in Final Cut Pro 6 when doing titles with Boris Calligraphy! Previously I had to exclude FCP6 from being managed by FontCard; the Final Cut/Boris Calligraphy combination just did not work right--now it does. Yay! And, since I use Linotype's FontExplorer X to do the major management of my huge (approaching 10,000) font library, the new support for FEX's sets is pure icing on the cake. Thank you, Unsanity, for continuing to develop FontCard so intelligently! One other note, the developer has been quite responsive to my occasional feedback over the years, implementing (perhaps coincidentally, but my ego likes to think otherwise) important features I've suggested. That is great support. Long live FontCard! ;^) (And, just for the record, I am not in any way affiliated with Unsanity, I'm just a very satisfied user.) [alert admin]

Olympus DSS Player 1.4.2 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
More troubleshooting for OS 10.3.8 updates
Thanks, chyson_dotmac, for the Stuffit tip. Here's an additional suggestion. I was trying to do the update from a completely fresh installation of the original 1.x software followed by running the 1.4.2 updater. No go after several attempts, even after using Stuffit 9.x. Then, before running the installer again, I simply launched the original, not-yet-updated software (it launched fine) and immediately just quit it again. Just by launching it, it created a new folder called "messages" which apparently made a huge difference. Ran the updater again and all was well. Now I'll actually try using the darned software... --Kevin J. [alert admin]

Adobe Reader 6.0.2 (Mac OS X)
Reader STILL can't save a filled-in form ![]()

As a former graphic artist, I've been using Reader in its many versions for umpteen years now. However, the Achille's heel in Adobe's PDF electronic forms workflow continues to be that there is no easy way for the average user to SAVE a filled-in form. What's the point of having an electronic form if, once you've filled it out, you can't simply save it electronically? Oh, sure, if your end user happens to own one of the expensive Acrobat products, like Acrobat Professional, they can save a filled-in form. But how many people have that? Virtually anybody who would want to open your interactive form, fill it out and return it back to you (while frequently wanting to save an electronic copy for their own records) will only have Reader. But Reader, even in this new 6.0.2 version, can't do this. You can ONLY print out a paper copy. Then as you close the document you just spent time filling out, you lose all the data you just entered. So much for the paperless workflow. Yes, I know if your form is Web-based an end user can go to your Web site, fill out the form while online, and submit their data back to your server's database via CGI programming. Well, that's IF you have a Web server and IF it is hosting a database and IF you have and/or can pay for CGI scripting skills. I don't have any of that. I'm just a guy trying to run a small non-profit. All I want is to be able to make an interactive form (for which, unfortunately, I bought Acrobat Professional, having been mislead to believe that it would let me do the action this sentence is describing), send out the form as an email attachment to whatever member of the general public wants or needs my form (and these will be ordinary people, not employees working from behind a firewall or having access to any fancy corporate-sponsored Acrobat site licenses), and have them send it back to me as an email attachment with their information intact. Can't do it. They can't send it. They can't save it. No way. No how. Not with Reader. Very frustrating, Adobe, that after all these years you still insist on maintaining this apparently arbitrary roadblock to a true electronic forms workflow. --Kevin J. [alert admin]

Alsoft MasterJuggler 3.0.3 (Mac OS X)
So many cries for a DEMO version...
and I completely agree. A demo version is a NOT a "would be nice" thing, it is an "absolutely required" thing. I wrote to Alsoft a few weeks ago, bemoaning (a) the lack of a demo and (b) the woefully lacking information on their Website (e.g., inadequate screen shots of the MasterJuggler interface). After several days, one of the Alsoft team wrote me back, apologizing for the lack of a demo, and then suggesting I could forward all my questions to him and he would try to address my pre-sales concerns. Yeah, sure--as if even a thousand questions and answers could be considered a viable alternative to actually seeing the product in action (not to mention I am simply not going to take the time to try to write up such a list of questions). While i believe he was sincerely trying to help, it was obvious to me that Alsoft just does not get it. HEY, ALSOFT: allocate some development resources to create a demo version! There is NO WAY IN #@*! anyone in their right mind would pay for an "all sales final" product without knowing what it is they are buying. Do you LIKE losing sales? Hopefully, if enough of us chime in with our needs for a demo version, Alsoft will realize the sales they are losing/have lost due to their misallocated development resources. In the meantime, I'm going to go over to Insider Software's site, and dowload the 30 DAY TRIAL of their font manager. And if it serves my needs...well, Alsoft, I WANTED to consider your product. --Kevin [alert admin]

Apple Final Cut Pro 2.0.2 (Mac OS 9)
Macfaithful! You have jumped to an awfully big--and rather demeaning--conclusion. I, too, have had exactly the same "can't find default location" error, and I am an official, fully-paid and registered owner of FCP. There is something going on here, and it has nothing to do with cracked or illegal software. Rather, I suspect it is related to my having possibly moved, aliased, and/or renamed a FCP folder or other component, but I don't have time right now to try to figure it out.) --bosskev [alert admin]

The download is working now--and I love Camouflage!
I even sent some money towards the developer as a thank you for creating this app. If you've got a messy desktop, give it a try.

Yes. His history reveals he is a total troll.
You are SO right about this guy. His posts are not "grumpy", "cute" or even "impish", although I am sure he thinks himself quite the raconteur entertainer. No, his posts are just the wild, illogical, random and/or inappropriate ramblings of a "I need attention" dullard. Unfortunately, his posts are also quite frequent. I'm astonished that VersionTracker continues to even let him post given how much he does to trash VT's credibility as a resource.

AppleScript, oops, one other thing
Sorry, I just realized I never stated or clarified one VERY important point. The "Reveal in Finder" function WORKS, it just always takes exactly two minutes. So, yes, the AppleScript is working, just extremely slowly.

No, I don't think lack of permission to execute AppleScripts is what is going on. While I don't consciously use AppleScript--never had a reason to--I've also done nothing to disable it. I assume a standard installation of Mac OS X includes AppleScript enabled. It is my own computer, not subject to any control from another administrator, so nobody has done anything to it. In any case, I just went into the AppleScript folder and played around,…

Total and utter crash--SOURCE, please!
As of today, 8/5/07, neither Quark nor Linotype have any mention of this conflict on their respective Websites nor in any other forum that I've been able to find. Could you please be more specific as to WHO (Quark? Linotype? your neighbor's kid?) made this statement?

Yes, I can reproduce exactly the same behavior as the original poster. In line with your request, Gritsch, I have tried, in turn: 1 TrueType font selected 1 PostScript font selected 1 OpenType font selected 1 each TrueType, PostScript and OpenType fonts selected (3 total) 4 TrueType fonts selected (4 total) Each time I got the spinning beach ball--are you ready for this?--for EXACTLY 2 mintues, not a second more, not a second less. Five different combinations selected and yet each…

Drobo? It IS beautiful, but...
...it only connects via USB 2.0, a maximum of 20-22MB/second transfer rate. While I wouldn't be so rude as to call that "slow", it is several orders of magnitude slower than other transfer methods, e.g., FireWire 400 or 800 or SATA. If/when they ever release a FW or SATA version, I'll be first in line to buy one. In the meantime, yeah, I'm highly discouraged that there has not yet been a software RAID 5 solution…
