Paperless 1.0 (Mac OS X)
Would appreciate a helpful review of Paperless
As a sole practitioner trying to keep costs down I have been looking for something modestly priced to save my time scanning documents and receipts for tax related purposes. The IRS will accept good quality scans. Most vendors I have encountered accept scans, even for returns. While there are a few rebate offers that will accept only originals, my personal experience is that more and more are willing, even desire scans. Further, I am not looking for a high quality OCR. I already have that. Rather I'm looking for quick and relatively simple for daily record keeping and clutter reduction. It seems that Paperless is a customized iPhoto for receipts and documents. That I like. It also seems to add limited, alphanumeric OCR that can be used for data entry via QIF exchange format. To me that is helpful, but not essential. I prefer the direct data entry into Quicken or iBank. What concerns me more about Paperless, is that Mariner says up front that it works best on Fujitsu ScanSnap or Pentax DS Mobile scanners. They also say problems have been reported on HP and Epson scanners and that Canon, Brother and Lexmark scanner users have reported problems. And, I happen to have Epson scanners. So the issue for me is not, the reasonably priced $50.00 software, but the requirement to buy another scanner for hundreds. I would appreciate any reviews that relate to using Paperless with the scanners mentioned above, in my case particularly Epson. Note to VersionTracker: I would appreciate the option of "Neither" under "Recommend..." when submitting a commentary. In this case I'm forced to either recommend or not. Since I'm hopeful in this case I selected "Yes", but I am really not recommending at this point. [alert admin]

Times Reader 2.053 (Mac OS X)
Unable to get Times Reader 2.0 to install.
Clicking on the main download button at the Times Reader site I only get a quick error message saying that Adobe AIr is not installed with a URL to get it. In fact Adobe Air was installed, but just to make sure I downloaded Air again. The installer confirmed that Air was on my MBP and would not let me proceed. Then I went back to the Times Reader help site and in the FAQ was instructed to download 2.0 manually and click on the .AIR file. It downloaded from the link provided but only showed up as a folder, not the customary icon. In side the folder and subfolders there wasn't any .AIR file to click on. Clicking on Time Reader only opens it as a folder. I've sent an inquiry to the Times. So for now I'm waiting. I would appreciate hearing from others about the same problem to see how wide spread, if at all, this is. [alert admin]

TinnitusTamer 3.0.5 (Mac OS X)
I agree with the comments of roorooroo below. I would only add that a workaround is to use Audio Hijack or WireTap or some other application that can "record" the sound generated by the Mac. [alert admin]

Mailings 1.9.42 (Mac OS X)
Mailings works. It is simple and easy to use on the first try. And with further experience it answers the call to do more. If you manage an email list that requires frequent mailings ... buy it. [alert admin]

NovaMind 3.2.12 (Mac OS X)
Perhaps the reviewer meant MindManager http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/30009. I haven't tried it, but from the developer web site it seems to charge twice the price of NovaMind without twice the features or ease of use. Or as the previous reviewer suggested, the reviewer is running Windows on an iNtel Mac may prefer MindMapper's MS integration. [alert admin]

WriteRoom 2.1 (Mac OS X)
Not a value for writers, but maybe for word processors ![]()

It is a relative matter. If you are a writer, a better value is CopyWrite. In CopyWrite's full screen mode you can do the same as WriteRoom. But for only $5.00 more CopyWrite gives you the ability to organize your writing, attach notes (helpful for on-the-fly memos for fact checking or further research and development), links to research, document and project statistics and tracking and much, much more. It is a total writer's tool. CopyWrite keeps word processing bloat to a minimum and assumes that once you have your thoughts down, you'll export them to a word processor for what they do best. WriteRoom is better suited if your task is word processing and need to add full screen writing and editing capability. As an addon to a word processor WriteRoom is probably the best solution. Still, even in that mission, the price seems steep. [alert admin]

Roxio Update Web Site Not Working as of 11/20 9:30 EST
I just got off a telephone conversation with a Customer Support person who confirmed that the update/registration ID/password web page does not work. For that matter, login to the discussions page doesn't work either. Trying the 'forgot password" method, similarly did not generate the promised email. The Customer Support representative tried unsuccessfully to pull up the registrations for people he was helping last Friday. Again, no joy. All he could suggest is to wait and come back later. I note that this has been an issue since at least Nov. 19th. It seems strange that a company with major resources cannot seem to fix this problem. On the other hand, it is possible that hackers are at work against Roxio. It is not in Roxio's self interest for the situation to exist. As upsetting as it is, tirades against Roxio are not a solution. [alert admin]

TimeSlice 3.2 (Mac OS X)
I use TS in a law office setting. TS is wonderfully flexible. I found that it can be customized to exactly fit the way I work and the way my clients want their work reported. To take full advantage of TS’s power requires some effort. Help is via the Menu or contacting the developer. I wish there was more well developed documentation in PDF form. TS is not entirely intuitive, at least to me, and I continually feel that I am missing something. The best part is that you get more than a useful application, you get support. Bill Modesitt is wonderfully customer oriented and responsive. He seems to be at work constantly trying to refine the application to the needs of his customers. This application, with such support, is a value deal. [alert admin]

Frequent Updates - Necessary but a pain ![]()

Good application, but for the price it is hard to understand a bug fix update released daily. Okay .... applause for the degree to which they are on top of bugs at whatever price. But now we have to rely on third party web sites like VersionTracker to know if our version is current. And when the updates are coming one every day we have to use your cumbersome anti-ease-of-use, not to mention, unusual (for shareware anyway), method of downloading the update. And when the updates are to fix bugs they are essential. So while I like the application, rapid-fire, daily updates have become a real pain. This application badly needs a "Check for Updates" menu item (or better yet a "Check for updates on launch" preference item. Then it needs an immediate "Download update" menu item. At this price, the updates are taking too much of the license owner's time. It is almost as if the developer is making a release-a-day-go-to-my-web-site-and-enter-your-id-and-serial as an anti-piracy technique. So the "good" of the application is diminished by the "bad" of having to deal with the "bad" of getting the latest bug fix. But for this it would be a 4 star [alert admin]

Thank you, thank you. Quicken's error message is misleading. It says to call your financial institution. I did this and was told that there was a "trouble ticket" on this issue and it would be a couple of days until it was fixed. Adding to the confusion was the fact that this occurred on only one of my accounts. So dumb me, I thought the problem was at the financial institution when it was really…
