I have been using Thunderbird for well over a year now and I have no plans on using anything else ever again. I used to use Netscape Communicator 4.79 on my old Mac, I enjoyed the email interface included with that browser and could never find anything better in terms of speed and efficiency. Newer Netscape versions were just too bloated, when I moved to XP a few years ago (yes, reverse switcher) I settled on OE as my primary email client. I really missed the abilty of typing in the first few letters of a name or just typing in "Mom" and having my email go to the correct place. OE would sometimes just not check my mail, or fail to notify me. Sometimes OE would just corrupt my mail files rendereing them useless. Combine all my troubles with the constant worry about security holes and I began to explore alternatives. I tried several email clients including Eudora, but none had the same "snap" as the old Netscape and didn't have the launch speed of OE. I stuck with OE a bit longer, but eventually discovered Thunderbird at the same time as was switching to Firefox. I think Thunderbird usage would skyrocket if users were given an option to download it when installing Firefox. I have switched a lot of people, they will never go back to OE. The junk mail filter is flawless and adapts well, the look is clean and efficient. OE simply can't handle my 6 POP3 email accounts. Thunderbird can, case closed. Hard to believe it's FREE! Audion 2.6 (Mac OS 9)
burns CDs using Toast! Same thing SoundJam has been doing on my system for about 2 years. It's quite interesting that unsupported software like SoundJam is still superior. You may have seen my earlier post before, so I was a bit nervous about trying Audion again. After downloading, I opened an MP3, simple task. Nothing complicated, didn't want to push the limits yet. It played, I started to play with some of the features like echo. Audio stuttered, Audion locked up, force quit, system locked, force reboot. After the restart, I increased the memory allocation, played an MP3, tried to adjust the EQ, this time after Audion died, I WAS able to force quit only to have my system lock 10 seconds later. Audion went in the trash. Forgive me for not having the patience to put up with this 2 more times as was the case with v2.5. When Audion actually played the MP3 (for a full 30 seconds) the base sound quality was far superior to any other MacOS player. I think the sound quality issue is there because most people don't like to tinker with the settings. I do. SoundJam has a very flat sound, then I adjust the EQ (it works) and Realizer. The result is quality far superior to Audion. I agree with a previous comment about wanting a player that is still supported, and I have high hopes for future releases of Audion, but I refuse to pay for software this unstable. Regarding comments by "milk": No software problems here, SoundJam works, iTunes works, MacAst works, even WinAmp for Mac works. My computer stays on 24/7 with reboots only for new software/hardware installation. I am a fanatic about maintaining my computer and anything that has crashed more than two times goes in the trash, period. Bottom line. I will accept nothing less. I would love to try future versions of Audion, but if they continue down this road of instability, I won't even bother with the download. If it is stable, and works, I will buy. [alert admin]

Netscape Communicator 4.7.8 (Mac OS 9)
Netscape was going to do this, with all the R&D devoted to v6.1 but suprises are good, and this was the best suprise of all. Install went flawless, the launch speed is up a tad, all prefs are recognized, and this is still the tried and true BEST browser/newsreader/mail application for the Mac. In the future, when 6.1 is perfected, I might switch. In the meantime though, it's quite refreshing to see someone offering a choice. You can have the new one, or the one you are used to. NOT A SINGLE CRASH in over 5 days of use! Bravo, Netscape, keep up the good work! [alert admin]

Audion 2.5 (Mac OS 9)
these comments. Hey try removing this, try switching this. If I am not mistaken, this is why most of us own Macs Vs Wintel boxes. So we DON'T have to try this and switch that to get something to work. I understand Panic is a Mac company, what I don't understand is why 2.1 was stable and the upgrade which we have to pay for again is more crash happy then a drunk driver on a cell phone in a car with bad alignment job. My needs are very simple, open the MP3, play the MP3, don't freeze my computer in the process. I launched 2.5 a total of (4) times, it froze (4) times randomly, it required (2) force quits to kill it, computer had to be forced to restart (finder freeze). All this was followed by me throwing it in the trash. I'm now off to run Norton on my disk to see what kind of damage it caused. Thanks Panic! [alert admin]

Sonnet Crescendo/Encore 1.4.6 (Mac OS 9)
bluntedboy before, I wish I could rescind my post. Turns out my Sonnet L2 card had a bad cache, which was quickly replaced under warranty. I have had ZERO problems with this. High marks to Sonnet Tech Support for quick and efficient response. [alert admin]

EnterNet 1.21 (Mac OS 9)
if you use this software, get in the habit of leaving the installer on the hard drive handy. If you have a weird problem, uninstall- then it forces a restart- that's really annoying, then reinstall- forces another restart- I'm getting sick of that Umax clone startup sound!, and then trash the other one and usually it works again. I usually reinstall on the average once a week. What are you gonna do though-- go back to dialup? hah. This company has us right where they want us. [alert admin]

EnterNet 1.21 (Mac OS 9)
a crappy beta version of EnterNet from BellSouth with my ADSL account. I "obtained" a 1.11 copy that seems to work much better. It still mysteriously stops working if you reinstall system software. Sometimes just fails to authenticate. I think it's another shoddy, unstable piece of software far inferior to the choices Windoze users have, but it's the only method for my Mac to have kick-ass bandwidth. It used to not reconnect after I got booted, for some reason, it works ok now?!?!? Weird. [alert admin]

Apple Display Enabler 2.4.1 (Mac OS 9)
idea why I have this installed on my computer, but I guess it's working OK because I can see what I am typing. I can't believe this tiny INIT has it's own page on VersionTracker but some of my important applications do not. Yawn! [alert admin]

ScrapIt Pro 5.5.2 (Mac OS 9)
the overall rating. I use this in conjunction with QuickScrap. You can cut and paste art work from all over the Internet and then edit everything with ScrapIt Pro. Still buggy, memory problems, and increasing the allocation doesn't correct the problem. NEEDS a feature to export mass files to the JPG format with naming on the fly. Also NEEDS ability to drag multiple files from one open scrap to another. Editing the files and exporting is a real hassle and I just leave everything in the Scrap files. Overall though I could not live without. [alert admin]
