Flux 2.38 (Mac OS X)

Nice, and always improving

Flux has taken on a challenge that really no other app has - full web design with a full OSX interface. This isn't one of the template systems, like iWeb, Rapidweaver, Sandvox, Freeway, etc. It allows true design of custom sites using web standards. It isn't perfect, but it stands alone, and the developer is continuously improving it, is responsive to bugs, and releases timely updates. [alert admin]

Espresso 1.0.5 (Mac OS X)

A very fine web editor

This package pretty much hits the nail on the head for true web editing - the Xcode of web editors. Has all the right tools and leverages all the right Mac technologies. Quite happy with it after testing it against all the competitors. Has... • TextMate's coding (and snippet) behaviors • XCode's code folding • Safari's preview and debugger • Coda's FTP support • Its own code navigation system (excellent) Of course, I still keep TextMate and CSSedit handy... just in case. Curio 5.0 (Mac OS X)

Excellent update

Curio has long been an innovative product, and version 5 continues to expand its capabilities as a creative organization tool. The new web views, and cross project linking are something I've wanted for a long time. The new project organization functions and iCal syncing are items I had even thought would make it in to the product any time soon, yet here they are. This is a great product which is open on my desktop all day every day, and is an excellent example of great Mac software. It isn't OmniOutliner, or OmniGraffle, or Yojimbo, or Microsoft Project, but it is an elegant combination of many of their features, and more. I'm definitely a satisfied user. Can't wait to see where they go with Curio 6. [alert admin]

Adobe Acrobat 9.0 (Mac OS X)

Oh well

When is Adobe ever going to realize that they keep adding stuff on top of stuff to Acrobat, and none of it has any kind of a workflow? Have they ever even tried to make "interactive" Acrobat documents with this thing? Waaaay too many small and poorly designed dialog boxes, way too many clicks, and heaven forbid there are any changes to be made.

It seems like several other Adobe products - they make it, but they don't actually use it. They just keep adding half-baked features with no practical way to get at them. Yes, it is possible to do all of these things, but no, they don't bother to spend any time making it elegant to do so. Not very Mac-like at all. Better off sticking with tools like Preview or Skim.

This is just more Adobe marketing without adding any value.

I'm waiting for Acrobat 10 Pro Extended Super Deluxe 3D Builder.

Together 2.0.8 (Mac OS X)

Pretty cool but...

within the first ten minutes of experimenting with this, I found that if I created a link to a file on the desktop, then double-clicked the file to edit in the original app, did the edit, and saved the file, Together would lose the file e.g. the link in Together became broken, and basically had to be deleted and recreated from scratch. What is the point of an application designed to keep things together, if it loses content just because the content was changed? I'm sure it is just a bug and not as designed to function... at least I hope so. [alert admin]

Curio 4.0 (Mac OS X)

Curio continues to rock

Curio 4 continues to prove that the guys at Zengobi are willing to "think different". They re-think the whole concept of diagramming by combining it with really cool project organization functions. This has been going on in Curio for a long time now, but the new version has a refined interface, great new tagging and search functionality, new GTD style tools, a great new take on snippets for capturing data from all of your other apps, and really cool new mind-mapping functionality. All that and the diagramming has gained some nice improvements too. The line drawing and support for connecting drawn objects via lines has some great new thinking in it too. Overall this app is one of the most useful I own, and I use it every day... in fact I'm constantly finding new ways that it can fit into my workflow and general organization. Kudos for Curio 4! Skype 2.6.0.137 (Mac OS X)

Skype says "No new updates available"

I'm on Version: 2.6.0.137, when I use Skype's internal "check for updates" function, it claims there is nothing available. Skype seriously needs to get down to a single version number for Mac, and actually get check for updates working properly. I have Skype-out, Skype-in and voicemail. The service is pretty good, but the software and updating process needs work. [alert admin]

DEVONthink Pro 1.3 (Mac OS X)

Still has problems

This program may be considered the state-of-the-art, but I'm not convinced that is saying all that much. It still has some problems.
for instance:

    • A system which is supposed to help you manage data, under OSX, that doesn't offer spotlight support is just a disconnected database.
and worse:
    • The program is buggy.
The second one must be qualified I suppose. It is all too easy to get the program into a mode where clicking things in the list on the left, does not display or update the document area, or selecting links only highlights the item in "unselected gray" in the list rather than actually displaying it. From that point, about the only thing you can do is close and relaunch the application. Additionally, from a usability standpoint it suffers serious flaws. As an example – the various modes of the program are nice, but it has a tendency to "hide" things which you think should be displayed in the lists, and reveal others which you wouldn't think would be there depending on what mode you are viewing in. I think it needs some list handling conventions which it sticks to no matter what display mode the program is in. In general, it the program acts as if it takes one mess of data, and makes a different mess out of it with its own set of rules. On the plus side – it has powerful and fast search. That's about it though. [alert admin]

NoteMind 1.4.2 (Mac OS X)

Still *almost* right

I keep trying the releases of NoteMind in hopes that it will evolve into what I'm looking for. One of the key things NoteMind fails to do is capture the resource which originated the data. In other words, if I select some data in a web page, and "F1" to capture it to NoteMind, NoteMind does *not* capture the URL from which the data was captured. I would expect NoteMind to capture this as well, and attach it to the note so that the site can easily be returned to. Instead, it only seems to capture the text, making the capture much less powerful than it could be. [alert admin]

Not an Omni Group Application

I think it is fair to say the OmniGroup has developed such brand recognition, that any Mac shareware user seeing this product's name for the first time will assume it comes from them. I did. In fact, every time it gets updated and relisted, I think it again, and wonder "gee, I wonder what OmniGroup is doing with Growl." Right or wrong, legal or not, and no matter how the dictionary defines things – that's just…

Why use anything else?

Such a great idea! yet Such a horrendous execution.

That is a ridiculous review. One star in everything because you don't like certain aspects of how it works - like the fact that when you change layout modes it prefers to expand the window onto the monitor it is currently being displayed on? Get a clue. Such a lop-sided review can't be taken seriously in comparison to so many others that love the product and consider it an example of elegance and quality Mac…

SoftChaos

Gee, according to the message from softchaos here :http://www.versiontracker.com/php/feedback/article.php?story=20060522195135759#comments They have been diligently working on an update... probably for over a year now. Gosh, I bet it will be a good one. :-( I still say Workstrip is abandoned.

Want to like it

DEVONthink has its own batch of deficiencies. For instance, the poorly designed UI, and the complete lack of connection to OSX services... like spotlight, iCal, Addressbook and more. Yes, DT has more features than Yojimbo, but it feels like a great big Windows application running on your Mac. Yojimbo has the right direction going, but it feels somehow incomplete, and it certainly needs more work in general functionality.

Buggy

Well, the bugs are there. And when you finally encounter them, you will probably not be so quick to defend this software. Particularly given that this software is designed to entrust your most important data to. My stuff is too important to trust to software which behaves like this does.

Mostly working but still some glitches

LOL. Those are the "glitches"? Given the rest of what is working then you should probably have rated this 99 stars.

Nice idea, anemic in execution

Mr. Sniffles, take a look at Curio. It does exactly what you are describing, and does it extremely well. I WAS looking at Yojimbo for certain kinds of records, because Curio was losing speed on heavy databases. No more. A recent update has made it blazing fast on my heaviest stuff. Yojimbo is going to have to do a LOT more to even get in the same league.

I think this app is abandonware...

Yeah, I agree. This app could have been a real winner, but it is the sort of app which has to be under pretty much constant development to stay on top. Bummer, but this one isn't doing that. And, yes, I'm a registered user too.

Buyer Beware

To be fair, this is a BIG package, with a LOT of features. Many bugs are not confirmed, are trivial, or affect things which most users will never encounter. The bug database is also public, meaning that end-users can simply add their own bugs to the list. In many cases the item being entered is not actually a bug at all. I'm just a user, and reasonably satisfied that not only can you create some good…
