HoudahSpot 1.1.2 (Mac OS X)

Appears to be the best

This appears to be the most complete, nice, easy and intuitive SpotLight substitute GUI. It also provides a lot of information on the found files. Plus, searches can stay "live", meaning that you leave the results window open and any new files that match the search criteria are added to the list in real time. It definitely lowers my search frustration. [alert admin]

ShapeShifter 2.2 (Mac OS X)

Shapeshifter made my system unstable

I have a G5 running 10.4.3. I installed Shapeshifter 2.2 and the Cathode Beta 6 theme. My system became very crashy, to where any application I tried to print from would freeze, and word processing programs would freeze when I clicked on text. I uninstalled Shapeshifter and trashed the preferences, but the crashiness remained and the Finder icon and Trash icon in the dock remained with the Cathode icons. I reinstalled the OS and all is well. In the meantime I contacted Unsanity support; they got back to me after a few days and told me to uninstall Shapeshifter, which of course I had already told them I did. [alert admin]

Scramble 1.4 (Mac OS X)

Dictionary not so hot

It's a good game, and a fun format, and good practice for Scrabble, but the dictionary they give you is lacking a lot of perfectly good words, and has some stuff in it that I'm pretty sure aren't words, so it's frustrating to play, because you find a good word and then don't get points for it. I wish they'd improve the dictionary, because I love it otherwise. [alert admin]

iClip 3.5 (Mac OS X)

Still the best of its kind

This is a really good program, and continues to improve. This release includes a suggestion that I had, and that I'm sure many others had. How often do you see a software company do that? It's good for temporarily storing stuff off while editing, and also for permanently storing stuff like my library card and bank account numbers. iClip 3.4 (Mac OS X)

Appears to be the best

I've used several of these "store clippings" utilities, and I think this is the easiest to use. It's also very actively supported. [alert admin]
