Freedom 0.4.1 (Mac OS X)
This has the potential to be a very useful program, but its fundamental operational principles are not well-documented: when you specify the amount of time you want to be internet-free, you are not specifying a countdown, but rather the actual amount of time your computer will be used before networking is restored. In other words, if it is 2pm when you specify 2 hours, your computer will only have networking restored at 4pm if you've actually used your computer for 2 hours during that time. Since sleep does not count toward computer usage, you never know exactly when networking will return. When I inquired about this, the developer replied that this was a design decision and would not be changed. The program should accommodate both the current approach and a simpler one, where the user specifies a time interval during which networking isn't available (say 2-4pm). Since the developer is not responsive to this need, I would not contribute money to this project. [alert admin]

Smart groups haven't been fully implemented yet when every other info manager has them? This beta is buggy (as one might expect): I imported my DTP database, and after using it for a while, DTP 2 pretended that it needed to be updated again! More importantly, unless you're sold on the "AI" design of this, DTP 2 is really too late. What people want is for their notes to be available everywhere, on their desktop, the web, and their iPhone. Evernote offers that now. [alert admin]

DiskWarrior 4.1.1 (Mac OS X)
Updated to 4.1.1, app still identified as 4.1!
Has anyone noticed that even after updating, the app still shows version 4.1, including in the splash screen? Creation/mod date is still 12/31/07. [alert admin]

MsgFiler 2.0.3 (Mac OS X)
1. Needs keyboard-only way of *opening* mailboxes. The "go to mailbox" button isn't selectable via the keyboard! 2. If there's only one match for a mailbox name, that name should be selected automatically -- why should the user have to press the down arrow key? [alert admin]

MoneyWell 1.3.3 (Mac OS X)
performance is still unacceptable on G4
I want to echo Andrew Wedlake's comments. The performance of version 1.3.3 is so poor as to make the program unusable a PowerBook G4/1.67 Ghz. The developer claims to have improved performance on Intel processors, but I'm not sure why it still isn't acceptable on a computer that is less than three years old. This is software that manages personal finances, not one that performs real-time video processing or something really processor-intensive; Quicken is a speed demon by comparison. In addition, although the developer has been quick to respond to email, I don't find him to have been very responsive about this issue, as it has dragged on for months. [alert admin]

Adium X 1.2.5 (Mac OS X)
It's a great client -- if only they would fix the bug where I'm unable to set for *all my accounts* the private setting to allow contacts only from contacts on my contact list (the setting doesn't stick). Every time I log in, I get 15 or so unsolicited messages. Why they haven't fixed this yet is beyond me, because it's a longstanding bug judging from their bug tracking system. [alert admin]

How does this compare to MoneyWell?
MoneyWell is also supposed to help with budgets. Has anyone compared the two? [alert admin]

SmartWrap 2.7.5 (Mac OS X)
What about the freeware WordService?
There's the freeware WordService from the folks at Devon Technologies (the makers of DevonThink and FreeAgent): http://www.devon-technologies.com/products/freeware/services.html Is SmartWrap really worth $20? [alert admin]

Bookends 10.1.1 (Mac OS X)
I wish to provide a followup to my previous comments. I have reconciled my differences with the developer and am on better terms with him -- several have written me that their primary reason for using Bookends was his incredible support, so my experience was definitely not the norm. Mac users are lucky because there are at least three strong contenders in the area of bibliographical management software: EndNote, Bookends, and Sente. Over time I continue to gain a better understanding of the complexities of these programs, which really must cover several distinct areas: Formatting bibliographies (and interoperability with various word processors), reference and attachment management (in the app), online searching and downloading, and note-taking. No one program is perfect in all areas (nor will one program suit everyone's needs), but at this point in time, Bookends is probably the strongest contender overall. Bookends continues to be improved at an incredible rate: 10.1.1 is already as much of an advance over 10 as 9.1/9.2 was over 9; the inline reference editing introduced in 10.1 is wonderful. Apple Mac OS X 10.4.11 (Mac OS X)
Seems OK, but running Disk Utility immediately afterward revealed some permissions problems like this: Owner and group corrected on ./System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources/Widgets.wdgt/Images/scroll_bar_mid.png I'm also finding that the weather and stocks widgets aren't downloading their respective data properly. Anyone else? [alert admin]

I don't understand. You had written, "the launched daemon is actually an Apple process and it is only launched at schedule time," and now you're mentioning about uninstalling a special daemon which is what the original user's objection was!

The release notes state April. What I'm more concerned about is the fact that in its current state, Retrospect 8 can't read backup sets created by earlier versions of Retrospect!

I'm not so sure that it's a great idea to be copying an app whose basic design dates from the late 80s. But in any case, Infinity Development doesn't appear to be an outfit capable of pulling it off. So many broken self-imposed deadlines, grandiose claims and promises. In its current state, this is most definitely not an alternative to Eudora, which runs fine under Leopard and Tiger. For those who hated Eudora's UI, Odysseus…

It's rather incorrect to write that they "offload[ed] it to another organization with a program nothing like Eudora," since Eudora's principal architect, Steve Dorner, and other Eudora developers, are the lead programmers. "Working hard to make up for lost time" -- another claim that means virtually nothing.

Your comments about the client being nowhere near ready are spot-on. I've followed development for months, and the whole development cycle has been characterized by grandiose claims -- and despite a repeated inability to meet ridiculously precise promised release dates (see one of the screenshots that announces 1.0 for May 12). The program is being developed cross-platform in RealBasic. More importantly, as much as I liked Eudora, you have to wonder about the raison d'etre…

That's right -- you're forced to pay a per-dictionary fee for what is essentially an *interface* upgrade, since the dictionary entries change little between upgrades.
