Microsoft Messenger 5.0.0 (Mac OS X)
The only product Microsoft makes that's worth using is Office 2004, and even its performance is shaky at times.
I quit using Messenger ages ago when I discovered Adium. If you haven't used Adium, try it, it has features Messenger will likely never incorporate -- on either platform. Adium has auto reply features, supports multiple IM protocols at once, has downloadable themes, sound sets, and is completely scriptable. For example, there's a cool script that will announce what iTunes song you're playing, just like iChat. Did I mention tabbed message windows? Picture support has been in Adium for ages. Too bad a product not even at the 1.0 mark yet can pounce MS's sorry excuse for an application.
As for ditching MS's other horrible Mac product, Windows Media player, have a look at WMV Player that installs a WMV codec for QT, eliminating the need for WMV player, even as a plugin.
And if you're wondering how I could rate a free product 'poor' on price, it's because I should be paid to use this application. For $25-50 a month I suppose I could sacrifice Adium for this piece of trash. [alert admin]

Poisoned 0.517 (Mac OS X)
Universal Problem with Gnutella
At first I thought the problem was with my machine, since I had a power supply die recently. I figured some files got corrupted and was causing the permission errors. However I noticed the same thing is happening on my iBook, and judging from other posts here, all made on the same day, something has changed with the Gnutella network that's causing a problem with giftd. Disable Gnutella like others have suggested and all is well. [alert admin]

Fast DVD Copy 3.2 (Mac OS X)
I attempted to 'backup' Office Space with this piece of software. The resulting DVD was unplayable in my DVD player (it reported a disc error), though played fine on my Macs. This was the first time I ever tried to copy a DVD on my Mac, though I've burnt many with iDVD and Toast with no problem. I switched to DVD Backup coupled with Popcorn instead, which worked flawlessly. Popcorn is only $50 anyway, which is still cheaper than the $99 you'd waste on this piece of software, which is incredibly limited, and in all likelihood just a hodgepodge of freely available open source apps. It might work fine for others, but I'm not very impressed. It's definitely not a $99 piece of software. [alert admin]

AlchemyTV DVR 2.2.3 (Mac OS X)
It finally installed for me. In general though, I'm becoming a little dismayed with the software. Could Miglia stop adding features to the software and just work on optimizing it? It has become more bloated with each release. Save us the monthly updates and just make the software less CPU intensive, and more reliable in general, even if it takes months to release another update. [alert admin]

AlchemyTV DVR 2.2.2 (Mac OS X)
Running a Quicksilver 2002, the installer crashes immediately after launching. I've downloaded the file three times in case of corruption; same deal. [alert admin]

Upload Speed Setting is Inaccurate ![]()

I noticed recently that if one sets the upload speed to about 20 KiB/s it will take about 3 more KiB/s more than that; this is especially true when you're on torrents with a huge number of peers. If you have more than one torrent seeding and forget this factor in calculating your upload speeds you can saturate your connection pretty quickly. Otherwise it's my favorite client. Plain, simple, no-frills. Just does what it's supposed to. [alert admin]

AlchemyTV 2.2 (Mac OS X)
I welcome all the recent updates, but the app has gotten a bit bloated. It takes a considerable amount of time for me to get a television picture after launching it on an 800mhz G4. [alert admin]

Microsoft Office 2004 11.0 (Mac OS X)
So, every app in Office 2004 supports right-to-left languages EXCEPT Word, the one where it is needed most. I'm waiting for Apple's answer to Word, so I can toss Office immediately. Word still feels slow on my 800mhz G4; nowhere near as responsive as Office on a similarly fast PC. Tons of lame features I have no use for. Thanks for nothing MS. Apple, you did an awesome job with Keynote, now let's see a MS Word killer. [alert admin]

MSN Messenger 4.0 (Mac OS X)
my friends to AIM and iChat. This barely qualifies as an update. I suspect I'll be equally let down by Office 2004. I sincerely hope Apple releases a legitimate (i.e. something better than Appleworks) competitor to Word, then I can rid myself of any Microsoft products. I mean, seriously, how hard would it be to add picture support? MS keeps supporting Office for Mac because it helps propagate their proprietary file formats, locking people into their products. Your Windows friends have no reason to use open formats if they know Mac people can open them just fine. Messenger has no real bottom line for MS; it doesn't lock anyone into closed formats, so they don't keep it updated. [alert admin]

Hmm, well the problem is kind of solved. We still can't connect to Gnutella with it disabled. Do you have a link to where this was discussed on the developer's site? That would be helpful. Are the developers aware of this and attempting to fix it?

It's more like 3 updates in the past 3 days now. You interpret this to be a good thing how exactly? To me is means there's absolutely no quality control going on. The DVR app still has bugs galore; maybe you haven't noticed them because you don't use the app frequently except for an occasional recording, either that or you work for Miglia.
