MPEG Append Suite 1.5 (Mac OS X)

Don't bother trying this one...

I needed a way to change the aspect ratio of MPEG streams without reencoding them. I tried PullDownX but it didn't work correct. Then I remembered the (FREE) OS 9 version of "Force 4x3" and "Force Anamorphic" - both don't work using classic in either 10.3.9 or 10.4.5. I don't have a native booting OS 9 mac so I tried the OS X version of the "MPEG Append suite". After "buying" the trial(!!!) i opened one of the apps. I was granted with a "Register or try the Trial" screen but i never came past that screen, because it kept reappearing every time i clicked on the "trial" button. So i sent an email to <dvd_sp_helper@mac.com> and received this: ---snip--- The original message was received at Sun, 2 Apr 2006 00:00:20 -0800 (PST) from mail16-ce1 [10.13.11.41] ----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors ----- <dvdsphelper@hoot.to> (reason: 550 Host unknown) ----- Transcript of session follows ----- 550 5.1.2 <dvdsphelper@hoot.to>... Host unknown (Name server: hoot.to: host not found) ---snip--- So don't bother trying this pile of c++p - if someone else has a suggestion for changing aspect ratios of MPEG streams in OS X, please let me know. ffmpegX 0.0.8d (Mac OS X)

Bummer!

Followed the instructions in Changelog.rtf but ffmpegX crashes right after choosing a tab (audio, video, options...) or choosing a preset from the pop up menu in the lower right of the window. I've been using 0.0.8b on another machine and it worked fine. This is a freshly installed system (and it meets the requirements for ffmpegX). Help! :-/ [alert admin]

Superb free alternative

yes, wiretap is free but it only records 2GB (2GB is the .AIFF-filesize limit)
