File Sheriff 1.1.7 (Mac OS X)
I have used this utility off and on for a while now. It is generally pretty handy to have to look at file details, adjust some values, dates, etc. One plus I have noticed, is it lets me edit the create and modify dates on files (these are my own user data files, not system files) which FileXaminer will not (or which filexaminer insists on admin password). Plus it has a bunch of other features: mp3 rename, icon create (though rather large resource), disk file browser. Especially good value if you buy as part of their utility apps bundle (which I did). I have used this for a quite a while. But am going to have to drop it, as it is just too unreliable on search or find strings. It does not seem to remember whether I have selected to start from file beginning, or whether I have case sensitive or not. Often, it finds only one instance of a string, while I can plainly see multiple copies of the exact same string on screen within several lines of the only 'found' instance. P.S. I did contact developer, who responded, but no resolution. [alert admin]

MacDust 0.6 (Mac OS X)
while it sounds "cute" to say a program "barely dusts" your Mac, I am not going to run a process which does unknown things to the computer. No list of what is done or documentation here, or at author site or in application file. [alert admin]

Ad-Aware SE 1.06r1 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)
version downloaded is 1.06 from May 2005
The VT description makes it look like there is a new Ad-Aware. But clicking on the link goes to LavaSoft main website, and their download link then goes to Download.com and downloads the long-standing version 1.06 from May 27, 2005. So, is this VersionTracker update of a December 2006 release incorrect? Or, if there is a new release, how and where to get it? Though, I do see at Lavasoft site that they are offering 15% off their products during Holiday season. [alert admin]

NFOViewer 0.1 (Mac OS X)
NFOViewer now at 0.2 from dev site
FYI - 1) NFOViewer is now at ver 0.2 direct from developer site (dt: 11/8/05) 2) It requires you to download and install a TrueType font in order for it to work. The Read Me has the info on that. 3) NFOViewer is mostly useful for those .nfo and .diz files that seem to have strange characters, like people did to make images with character-based printers back in the computing dark ages ;-). NFOViewer translates those into gray-scale charactercell blocked images. Otherwise, for plain text .nfo files, TextEdit works fine. [alert admin]

FFT Analyzer 1.b1 (Mac OS X)
Cool, FFT (v1.0b1 of Aug 2004) displays in a live bar graph the sound frequency and amplitude of sounds which come in via either Mic or Audio Line In (as available in the Sound System Prefs). Lets you adjust various frequency range gradation, scale, zoom etc. Runs fine on OS X 10.4.2 [alert admin]

I have used the free version of PanicWare PopUp Stopper for several years. It has always worked pretty well. Big plus is that it is free and simple to install. (They also have more sophisticated paid version(s) - I have not tried those.) A few popups still seem to get through, but most are blocked. Can set it to use an Alt key click to allow desired popup windows. [alert admin]

yes. I used to rely on VLC in the 08x versions (and earlier). And up to 086i it seemed to be getting better each release. But 092 had a lot of problems, at least on the MBP 10.5.4 I was using. I tried to post feedback, but forums were closed soon after release of 092, and were still closed each day that I checked to try to post a list of issues I had…

I think the way that they do the version releases is: odd middle node = beta development, even middle node = official stable release Thus 4.16.whatever = official stable release 4.17.whatever = beta development interim releases 4.18.whatever = will be next official stable release when they bump it up

-not sure if this will help, but, I was reading up on the rsync command, which I believe iBackup uses, and in its FAQ page, it says that if a rsync operation seems to always recopy everything, it might be because of incorrect use of the -t parameter (timedate stamp). info at: http://www.samba.org/rsync/FAQ.html

I also do not save my music files to my (~) user Music iTunes folder and do NOT let iTunes 'keep my music organized'. Though I do have the "iTunes Library" and "iTunes Music Library.xml" files there. Reason being, I want the songs on another drive(s), in different folder groups -- not in my ~User area taking up boot volume space, and I prefer my own artist -not album- or sometimes genre folder organization system. (it…

As a longtime registered user of GC, I too was surprised by the new humongous size of version 6.x I looked inside the package and it turns out that most of that huge data space is from the many multi-language pdf documentation files.

Hi, Hey, its OK to be using an older version. FYI, in my own list of the different iTunes versions, the ones that I have used over the years, I keep track of which are the 'stable-works-well' versions. (based on my opinion and personal experience as well as tracking posted comments and articles) My list shows that for iTunes 4.x, if you wanted to update somewhat, the major features of newer…

the Jpeg (jpg) picture format is already a compressed data format. (which is why it is used in so many digital cameras, except for high end which save huge 'raw' or tiff files) And, though not explicitly stated, almost all data compression programs, when told to compress an already compressed file, will either leave it same size, or make it bigger. This is just due to the rather complex data examination and compression formulas. Not a…

Published in MacWorld July 12 (with most of that text taken straight from the CUPS news articles pages. "The Common UNIX Printing System (CUPS) has been part of Mac OS X since Jaguar (Mac OS X v10.2) was released. Now CUPS is officially part of Apple, according to CUPS creator Michael R. Sweet. “In February of 2007, Apple Inc. acquired ownership the CUPS source code and hired me (Michael R Sweet), the creator of CUPS,” said Sweet…

Not sure if this may be related, but I have seen the 1903 date on some of my files that (a) were created on PC, so have no create date OSX attribute - thus the OS stuck a 1903 in there, or (b) on some files that had problems with the resource fork, either because of copying to non-Mac volume or otherwise. Again, they get assigned a 1903 date for reasons unknown. Reason this info may…
