IBM ViaVoice X 3.0 (Mac OS X)

Working well under 10.3.x for local users, not network users

ViaVoice is working well for me at my current employer's place when run by a user whose account is defined locally on the machine that ViaVoice is installed on. It runs quickly, cleanly and remarkably accurately under 10.3.4 or 10.3.5 on the G4 iMac 800 and the G4 Al 1.5 GHz that I've tried it on. However, network logons - i.e., logons for those who are authenticated against our LDAP server and are not defined on the workstations themselves - don't play well with ViaVoice. (After completing all the audio checks, you need to click a Start button to begin the voice training but the Start button is dimmed out.) Any clues, anyone? I've sent the details and some logs to ScanSoft UK at their request but any tips appreciated meanwhile. [alert admin]

SightSaver 0.1 (Mac OS X)

Lots of fun

Works smoothly on a 1GHz 12" PB G4 and an 800MHz iBook G4. Very amusing. [alert admin]

Imperfect but useful

You can specify (use the Preferences icon) that PDFs should be sent directly to the Memory Stick of a Clié (I've just uploaded Apple's OS X Server docs and some stuff from the excellent bombich.com site). In addition, and again contrary to at least 1 previous report, the jog dial or jog wheel on the Clié is supported. You can rotate the dial to scroll back or forward or click the jog wheel to page down. Reader also supports dragging with the stylus - it works very quickly. The Mac OS X app that converts PDFs and makes them ready for the PDA is slow. File sizes can balloon, too - a 1.6Mb PDF from Apple generated a 5.7 MB Palm file with 16 bit image bit depth (thousands of colours). Problems: converts some pages of text with shaded borders to large images on the PDA. A big problem with the OS X Server documentation - like Command_Line.pdf, which becomes a series of unreadable images. Tap and hold on the image and you get "image exceeds memory limit requirements", even if images are converted to 256 colours. Simpler documents - with no shaded borders and only small images - are fine. [alert admin]

iGet 1.0b5 (Mac OS X)

Outstanding

This is hard to fault so far. Critical points: 1) No software (even iGet) needed on the remote Mac 2) Layered on top of SSH - secure, convenient 3) Supports Rendezvous 4) Fast 5) Completely intuitive I began my use of it with b4 and was extremely impressed. Everything from the installation to the interface design was fabulous. It has transformed the way I transfer data between Macs. [alert admin]

ArcSoft PhotoStudio X 4.0 (Mac OS X)

Not bad

Sometimes incredibly slow to save in OS X 10.3.2 (admittedly, this is with very large scans) but works well and accepts the PhotoShop-compatible plug-in for my CanoScan N1220u scanner. Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 is probably the one to go for if you're going to shell out any cash but if you're a .Mac member and get this for free, use it to do the things that iPhoto doesn't. Contrary to previous posts, there isn't an issue with OS X. It's a Carbon app and it runs as a native OS X application. [alert admin]

Canon ScanExpert 3.8 (Mac OS X)

Works well with Panther

I've been using version 3.8 with Panther (OS X 10.3.2) and have been happy with its performance as a plug-in for Adobe Photosop Elemenets 2.0.2, ArcSoft PhotoStudio 4 (that was a free download for .Mac users, in case you're wondering why I have it) and Graphic Convertor 4.6 I have a CanoScan N1220u. The results are good. I recommend turning on the ColorSync preference in the Preferences menu that you see after choosing Acquire in your choice of image-manipulation software. [alert admin]

Postfix Enabler for Panther 1.0.7 (Mac OS X)

Excellent work

For those of us who don't want to edit text files every time we want to switch any of these features on or off, this is excellent. The IMAP mail package is a surprise bonus, unrelated to Postfix but very welcome. Great work and well worth ten dollars for the thought and time that have gone into making this so effective. I started with Sendmail Enabler and then v1.0 of Postfix Enabler under Panther - the feature list has grown, the interface has continually improved and I'm pleased to see its progress. [alert admin]

Exceptional

This has come in very useful many times in several countries. It's extremely good work and stands as a great example of worldwide collaboration. Tip: there are so many cities' details included that most people are best off installing just the cities they need. Adding more later is a snap. Congratulations and thanks to everyone involved. FAXstf X 10.1.4 (Mac OS X)

What's wrong with the current version?

I used an iBook 700 for 7 months. Sent may faxes from the version of FaxSTF supplied by Apple - worked fine. I uinderstand that the original OS X versions (maybe even the OS 9 versions) were pretty awful. The current versions are fine. I recently bought a 1GHz 12" PowerBook - it's now running Panther and FaxSTF 10.1.4, again suppled with the computer's original Mac OS X 10.2.7 install - and since Panther's fax forwarding by e-mail doesn't work by default and STFPro is only $20 for me, I'm going for it. Again, I've sent and received 8 faxes on this machine (under OS X 10.2.7) and they've worked just fine. They display well, print well, are sent easily and those I've received were received perfectly. Whoever Scotty321 is (see reviews below and click on his name to see all his/her reviews) seems to hate FaxSTF but insists on upgrading every time. Either that, or (s)he's lying about running version 10.5. I suspect that (s)he has had a really bad experience with an older version of STF and is just not going to let anyone forget it. Embedded links in e-mail messages work fine

Reply to Explorz: I create an html formatted message, making sure it's sent ONLY as html, not as plain WITH html. (Check prefs very carefully.) I add a link by highlighting a word, clicking the anchor icon, choosing link and typing in a web address. (Including the http://) When I receive the message in Mail.app, I see the body text of the e-mail message but do NOT see the URL. The link works exactly as it should if I click on the word, though. Sounds like something to do with your setup is causing the issue - Moz works fine. [alert admin]

Acrobat Reader

I'm using a Clié PEG TG-50 and Mac OS 10.3.4. I find that the jog wheel <i>is</i> supported and you <i>can</i> send docs directly to the Memory Stick.

HTML Emails are imposible

When you compose a rich (HTML) message, you have to check not only the format of the message itself - with the message displayed, check Options=>Format=>Rich Text only is selected - but that Mozilla isn't set up to adjust your format according to target domain. I have neither the problem with embedded links being displayed nor the problem with images sent as separate attachments. I can see images within the e-mail clients (Eudora & Mail.app) in…

Unable to start Sendmail Enabler

Happened to me too. The problem turned out to be with my newly downloaded Stuffit software. When expanding some executables (programs) it fails to correctly set the permission of the expanded files. You can manually CHMOD the contents of the expanded SendMail Enabler package or download the newer Stuffit Expander. Versions 8.0.1 onward don't have this problem.
