Stickman 5.0.5 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

Not freeware

Despite being labelled as 'freeware', Stickman as downloaded actually is a 14-day trial version. Hopefully the developers will edit their listing to read 'trialware'. [alert admin]

E-Zsoft iPhone Video Converter 3.0.16 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

5 Minute conversion limitation

The developer describes this as 'freeware' and claims: "The STD version is totally free with full function " but neglects to note that the downloadable (STD) version only converts the first 5 minutes of any file file. As a result, this is really a limited- function trial version, described in a misleading fashion. It may be (in the paid version) a very useful program-- I don't know-- after discovering the 5-minute limitation, I did not test it out. [alert admin]

Basilisk II 17 (Mac OS X)

Ethernet support? How

This version (17: 2006-01-08) promises that it adds Ethernet support, and there IS an ethernet field in the preferences settings. I've tried various entries along the line of /dev/en0 (or en1) without success... I'm running OS 7.6.1 on my emulated Quadra-- which otherwise works OK, (running on a 1.8 GHz iMac G5). [alert admin]

Rosoft Audio Recorder 4.1 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

Freeware with a catch...

The version of Rosoft Audio Recorder available here is a free product, but it also installs the Ask Jeeves/MySearch Internet Explorer toolbar. The user agreement includes the note: "2. Our Sponsor- If you don't like the program from our sponsors that is included you can always uninstall the program the Control Panel... or you can register at http://www.Rosoft.u/php/register.php"

(That URL doesn't work-- www.rosoftengineer.com/php/register.php goes to a page that allows you to purchase the product-- presumably minus 'sponsored' programs-- for US$14.95)

This initial user agreement does not indicate what additional software will be installed; if you agree to it, a second user agreement, for MySearch appears. As far as I can tell, this toolbar is the only 'sponsor' program installed.

After installation (and restart), the MySearch toolbar can be removed using the Add/Remove control panel, though doing so will keep the Rosoft programs from working.

Certainly this is not the only program that installs 'sponsor' programs; the popular Macromedia Flash Player and Adobe Reader both include the Yahoo Toolbar in their default installations, for example. [alert admin]

PowerPoint Slide Show Converter 1.0 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

... or use Microsoft's Freebie

I haven't tried this, but I'm certainly willing to assume it works as advertised. But for many users, the best way to distribute Powerpoint presentations to people who don't have Powerpoint won't cost US$49... at least not when Microsoft distributes a free Powerpoint viewer: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=428D5727-43AB-4F24-90B7-A94784AF71A4&displaylang=en or when recent versions of Powerpoint can export packages that can be viewed without Powerpoint installed. Tux Paint

TuxPaint includes a configuration utility, which installs its own icon in the TuxPaint start menu group. With it, you can customize a variety of useful things- in my school setups, for instance, I change the default which auto-opens the last-saved picture at startup, prefering to start up with a blank canvas. I also change the default save location, changing it to a shared network drive. To 'export' children's saved works, all you need to do is…

$19.95 Freeware?

OK-- I've tried it... it's not freeware- it's a demo version limited to 60 minutes of gameplay. There's nothing wrong with that-- but it would be nice of them to tell us this in the description, and to describe it accurately.

Tux Paint

The comment re. saving/exporting files is not accurate-- TuxPaint saves files as standard *.PNG files; these can be used by a variety of software, or converted (using something like the free Irfanview) into JPG or BMP or what-have-you. There is a non-standard default folder used for storing files-- and no standard File Open/Save dialogue box allowing you to navigate to another folder... probably a wise decision since the program is designed to be used by young…
