Spamphibian 1.0 (Mac OS X)
I just received a reply from the developer which explains the value in the product:
Our product was meant to compete with Barracuda. While there are free
alternatives to this product as well (less the hardware), it's really the
service that creates the value. Literally half the value of our product is
the yearly subscription to the daily spam and virus DNA update files we send
to each customer. With a rule database of over 250,000 spam/virus profiles,
you can imagine that it takes quite a bit of staff time to create and keep a
database like this updated. Coupled with the support and service, and
compared to Barracuda's $1800 entry point, it's really a good deal.

Free/Open Source Alternatives?
I did not try this products, but I am honestly wondering why pay $650 for this product, when there are at least two very good Free/Open Source packages such as Anti-Spam SMTP Proxy The Anti-Spam SMTP Proxy (ASSP) Server project aims to create an open source platform independent SMTP Proxy server which implements whitelists, Bayesian, and virus filtering to help stop unsolicited commercial email (UCE). Anti-spam tools should be adaptive to new spam and customized for each site’s email patterns. This easy to use tool works with any mail transport and achieves these goals requiring no operator intervention after the initial setup phase. http://assp.sourceforge.net/ and Mail Avenger Mail Avenger is a highly-configurable, MTA-independent SMTP server. It lets users run messages through filters like ClamAV and SpamAssassin during SMTP transactions, so the server can reject unwanted email before assuming responsibility for its delivery. Other unique features include TCP SYN fingerprint and network route recording, SPF (sender policy framework) as a general policy language, qmail-style delivery of extension addresses, validation of sender addresses through SMTP callbacks, mail-bomb protection, integration with kernel firewalls, and more. http://www.mailavenger.org/ [alert admin]

Sawmill 6.2.6 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
very responsive to requests and bug fixes. so much so that I kept postponing using the program till new releases stop coming out so quickly. Boy was I wrong, I should have taken the plunge much earlier. We are a web hosting company, and have several servers with several domains/sites on each, log files are in the low GB per month, Sawmill was very easy to configure and use and once I configured it properly very fast. Support is superb. Highly recommended. [alert admin]
