Interarchy 9.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Interarchy v. 9 has finally it its stride with this release...

I've used Interarchy since v.3, and the initial release of v.9.0 was shaky, especially compared with v.8. With v.9.0.1, all appears to be well again. The developer has be responsive to my queries, and all issues that I reported have been addressed. I have licenses for Transmit and Fetch, and like them both, but use Interarchy 9 almost exclusively to maintain two websites, one of which contains 150 pages and 200 images. Mirror functions are wicked fast. Compared to Interarchy v.8.5.4, the current version feels more compact and nimble. Although v.8 has the ability to check links and validate html syntax on remote sites, I perform these functions on the local sites with BBEdit, so I don't miss these features in v.9 with the way that I do my work. For my 2¢, Interarchy leads the pack again. [alert admin]

Eudora 8.0.0b3 (Mac OS X)

Tried to use v.8.0.0b3 ... no luck

Couldn't import Eudora v.6.2.4 filters or mail. Can't recommend v8.0.0b3 for any real-life use. [alert admin]

Eudora 8.0.0b3 (Mac OS X)

Why worry? Eudora 6.2.4 works fine, even under Leopard.

I've seen only one problem with v.6.2.4 under OS X 10.5, and that's the "unquote" command, which doesn't work. Other than that, everything is OK, AFAIK, and I see no reason not to keep running it until some future OS X upgrade breaks it, or Eudora 8 has sufficient functionality, or I find something else. The Penelope team is largely composed of Qualcomm employees, including Steve Dorner, who created Eudora in the first place. If he doesn't know what constitutes the "soul" of Eudora, I don't know who would. I just think this project is going to take much longer than most people would wish. Right now, v.6.2.4 still works for me. [alert admin]

Eudora 8.0.0b2 (Mac OS X)

Re: More like Thunderbird than Classic Eudora

Yes. The Penelope (Eudora) project is based on Thunderbird code, rather than starting from scratch. Please see developer's description above. Classic Eudora functionality will be added later, but one can't expect that now. Unless you want to be beta tester (a significant commitment in time and bug reporting), version 6.2.4 is still the best Eudora ticket. [alert admin]

Eudora 8.0.0b2 (Mac OS X)

Eudora "Penelope" is an open-source project in beta phase...

...so please don't be disappointed if most of the Eudora v.6.2.4 advanced functions haven't made it into this build. Eudora v8 is provided for those who want to plug in to the development effort, and is not intended for general use. Right now, as I understand it, the developers are working on underlying code structure; implementing classic Eudora features will take place later. In my experience, v8 has been stable and provides basis functionality; the spam filtering works well. While I check out v8 from time to time, my main email client remains Eudora v6.2.4, and that's what I'd suggest for Eudora users who need to get a lot of work done and aren't interested in beta testing. Eudora 8.0.0b1 (Mac OS X)

Stable with decent feature functionality

Solid release for a beta; no crashes to date. Built-in spam filter is effective. Graphics, icons, etc., not as attractive as Apple Mail or MS Entourage. Disappointing. Imports mail reasonably well; still some occasional errors. Search function is fast. Filters have more functionality than Eudora v6. Much, if not most, of the advanced Eudora v6 capability has yet to be implemented, so the older version gets work done quicker at this point. [alert admin]

Eudora 8.0.0b1 (Mac OS X)

Re: Thunderbird in Paradise

Take a look at <http://wiki.mozilla.org/Talk:Penelope> if you'd like to get an idea where the "Eudora" concept fits into this beta release. Please understand that the classic Eudora features and supporting code were under development for well over a decade before it became open source, so there's a lot of work to do to make the transition, and there isn't always agreement among the Eudora faithful about priorities. This will take awhile. The vast majority of Eudora users will be happier staying with v6.2.4 for awhile. It lives on both PPC and Intel Macs in my business and works great. The reason to cast your lot with Eudora beta development is that input from a larger user base will facilitate a faster rate of progress. Beta testing is a PITA, basically. [alert admin]

Uploaded a test 66 MB .dmg file without a problem...

Check whether your ISP is timing out on long transfers; that's more likely the problem than Interarchy.

SuperDrive dead?

Sadly, this problem has been reported on the Macfixit site. Quoting from Macfixit: "Dozens if not hundreds of users are now reporting that SuperDrive Firmware Update 2.1 killed their optical drives, with the devices no longer reading media, nor accepting or ejecting."

Software the world doesn't need

Presumably, Panic gave thought to 1. the viability of the web development IDE concept itself, and 2. the relative difficulty of creating an elegant assemblage of small-footprint components that compete feature-wise with discrete heavy-hitter apps such as BBEdit, TextMate, etc. For a product aimed at the professional market, that's bucking the tide on both counts. This last point was probably not lost on the Panic folks. I'm guessing that Coda is currently positioned as an entry-level/prosumer…

No problems with a 373 MB web site...

Does that qualify as decent-size? Fetch manages it just fine.
