App Store Expense Monitor 1.2.0 (Mac OS X)

An Excellent Application.

This is one of those apps that does only one thing - it totals the amount of money you've spent on iPhone apps by checking your itunes folder and allows you to do some useful sorting by price, category etc. Not world shattering by any means, but it says something about the lateral thinking of its author. Like most people who bought an iPhone I constantly downloaded apps - the fact that at least two thirds got trashed is another story. I'd always intended to total up the cost of my "over-enthusiasm" but the thought of trawling though the multitude of emails that the itunes store sends always put me in a soporific trance. This app does it in the blink of an eye - and that's it - nothing else ... but what a revelation if you haven't been keeping tabs on your expenditure. I couldn't believe I've spent almost $300 in the two months I've had the iPhone ... the novelty is wearing thin now but that $300 is downright embarrassing. If you've got an iPhone or an iPod you really ought to do yourself a favor and download this free program. The developer gets five stars, not just for the application, but because of some pretty nifty original thinking. [alert admin]

CurrencyConverter 1.4.1 (Mac OS X)

Old feedback - circa 2002

Given that the latest feedback is seven years old, I thought I'd give a current review. First of all congratulations to the developer for keeping this product afloat for the last eight years - must be a labour of love for a freeware app. Firstly the rounding bug complained of seven years ago must be fixed because it's not there now. Secondly this has got to be one of the most versatile currency dashboard apps around. The app allows for quite extensive configuration, reordering to you heart's content. Once you've done that you can just let it be and get regular up-to-date comparisons for a whole host of currencies - I've got about seven that I check off frequently. Inserting a figure for any currency allows for an instantaneous comparison with all other set currencies. The accuracy as far as I can see is the same as xe.com and a whole host of currency web sites. The beauty of having a dashboard client(at least this client), is it loads fast, and if there's no connection the last figures remain so that calculations can still be done. After seven years there's no justification for it having such a low star rating, consequently I'm giving it a five. [alert admin]

Pod to Mac 1.0b11 (Mac OS X)

A bit of a surprise

I already own podworks which is an excellent program to get stuff off an ipod. On a whim I thought I check around to see if there are any other utilities that were as easy to use. Pod to Mac was actually my last choice and it was a bit of a surprise. I found it somewhat easier and clearer to use than all the others including the excellent podworks. Pod to Mac hasn't got any help but it's so simple it doesn't really need any. Some similar ipod ripping apps have so may features that they're actually difficult to use because of the long learning curve. Pod to Mac seems stable and reliable when I tested it with a once only upload of a few thousand files, songs and audiobooks from my ipod. It's freeware so price is obviously not an issue. Not denigrating podworks in any way because it's always worked well for me, but I think if I had to make a choice it would be Pod to Mac. [alert admin]

VirtualKeyboard 3.6.3 (Mac OS X)

Love it.

It can do everything a normal keyboard can do but the best thing is that you don't have to be disabled to use it. Ok, here's a little secret: late at night with the lights off I like to relax in bed with the MacBook Air on my chest till I drop off to sleep. I can't see they keyboard at that angle but I can still type with virtual keyboard. I might get somewhere between 15 and 30 minutes work done before consciousness fades and I shut the lid of the Air and shove it to one side. (I sit the Air on one of those "stable tables" with a couple of lugs to allow airflow under the device.) [As an side: the Air with it's solid state drive has just got to be the best Mac I've ever owned - can't praise it enough. Solid construction, lightweight, super fast start up and thin as rake - a real take-anywhere laptop. End of plug for MacBook Air.] Back to VK - the only other time I used virtual keyboard was in hospital where I was literally! on my back for three days. Never had a problem with it. Best $20 I ever spent. [alert admin]

Tidy Up! 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Very nice application

But the upgrade price, 2/3 of the price of the sale price, is way too steep given that v2 doesn't effectively give any more functionality than v1. The new interface is nice and it's set out better but not $20 worth. [alert admin]

Currency Converter 1.2.1 (Mac OS X)

Excellent program but

can confirm this version has problems with dashboard, drives the CPU to 99% and the fans go crazy trying to cool things down. [alert admin]

TimeFlyer 2.2 (Mac OS X)

simple and straightforward

I have no use for a timeline app but if I did I would probably buy this one. Firstly it's very simple to use it effectively has no learning curve, secondly, it seems to give you most of the eye candy of more expensive timeline programs like Bee Knees standard timeline, and thirdly it's significantly cheaper than Bee Knees. My only complaint is that there was no obvious way to import calendar info from apps like ical although there is a suggestion in the help file that it will import tab delimited files. In the short time I tested it, it worked flawlessly, no crashes and files loaded quickly. One really can't fault it as a inexpensive straightforward timeline app. [alert admin]

MacJournal 5.1b5 (Mac OS X)

Beta versions

these 15 day expiry times are a pain in the a... When I first got the Beta the one thing I didn't expect, was it to quit after 15 days. The last two have expired on me and the Beta numbers haven't even changed, it just means you have to keep going back to Mariner's web site and enter your details yet again to get yet another beta. And if you don't want to do that, there's no obvious way you can downgrade, except as one versiontracker guy has done, write directly to the developer. I work a 14 hour day as it is and I kind of resent having my time wasted. Why not just allow customers to downgrade easily by having a link on the site, or alternatively wipe the self-destruct code from the app! Well I've got three days to go before this one expires and I've already decided not to spend any more time on it - this time when it quits it can stay quit. [alert admin]

Dream Recorder 2.1.e (Mac OS X)

Versiontracker is so annoying

Versiontracker is so annoying. There is no obvious way to delete accidental double entries. When I clicked the submission button for the review below I got an error, so I refreshed the page and clicked again. Now there are two entries and no obvious way to get rid of one of them. [alert admin]
