Intego VirusBarrier X5 10.5.8 (Mac OS X)
If you believe your mac needs antivirus protection I think Intego's Virusbarrier is a good albeit a little expensive solution. It works just like advertised and updates come at least once a week. It is very easy/intuitive to use and almost never crashes. If you're into photos or video on a pro basis you should exclude the drives with the raw material from real-time scanning to avoid a drop in data transfer rates. It's better to run VB on all your drives once every couple of weeks (months?) than to have its real-time scanner monitoring all of them constantly. I can only give you my opinion on European customer support: they are friendly, helpful and even generous. Don't hesitate to contact them. Personally, I must say I find the price of the app and the virus definitions a bit too expensive. Maybe Intego could reconsider their price policy. A noticable drop in prices could eventually convince many more customers to buy their products. One thing, however, that is bothering me is that they are very very slow to implement new features requested by customers. For example, I don't see why Virusbarrier still has no option to close automatically after it completed an on-demand scan of a file started from the Finder's context menu. A price drop and open ears to customers' request would raise this product to 5 stars. [alert admin]

iTuneMyWalkman 0.952 (Mac OS X)
Very nice idea but painfully slow... ![]()

I love the idea. I was going to use this app to sync a playlist (itunes) to a usb stick. It works ok when your playlist is only about 200MB or at least less than 1GB. It creates M3U playlists and allows to save the tracks by genre or playlist. I read somewhere you could save them by artist names but I couldn't find that option anywhere. Then I tried to sync a 23GB playlist and the app took 2 days(!) just to "collect data from iTunes". There is just no way you can use this app if it takes that long. I'm not going to leave my mac running for 2 days and more every time I want to sync my playlist to that usb stick. Like I said, nice idea but you have to work on that speed issue. [alert admin]

Intego Personal Backup X5 10.5.1 (Mac OS X)
10.5.1 is indeed useless & a waste of time and money ![]()

After using Intego product for some years now, you know a thing or two: their software is probably overpriced and - what's worse - Intego is incredibly slow when it comes to releasing updates. As for Personal Backup: it is just not working. Read the error messages in the logs and you'll see it's due to bad programming. I wonder why they won't fix them. Didn't they run any serious tests prior to releasing this buggy version? Or is it just that I am the only one left who still buys their software (last time really) and because I gave up on their support they haven't figured out yet how bad PBX is. Intego, people, hello? Wake up! Start testing your own products and listen to feedback. And release troubleshooting updates more regularly and FASTER! At this time: I WOULDN'T BUY IT again! [alert admin]

Default Folder X 3.0.6 (Mac OS X)
Very nice idea but didn't work for me ![]()

I am just an ordinary mac user like most, not a programmer or expert. So I can't comment on why applications don't work or who is to blame. I can only tell you about my user experience. More than a year ago I started using Default Folder X for quite some time and I really started to like it. I especially loved that I could finally specify a standard open/save folder for each application to show up right away in the dialogue. A feature that I would actually have expected Apple to come up with sooner or later (rather than never). But however much I liked the comfort Default Folder X gave me the truth is that it freezed my open/save-dialogues many many times. Often fore-quitting the application in question was enough but sometimes I had to do a hard reset (holding the start button for some time). As I said I don't know why it did that. All I know is: eventually I uninstalled Default Folder X and then the problem was gone and has never returned since. Too bad because I really liked the comfort of Default Folder X. I must say I haven't tried version 4. Maybe it runs better now. Who knows... Only one more thing: since I am not a programmer I can't say how much work it is to write and maintain Default Folder X. But if I compare it to other very useful applications I bought (like Little Snitch, 1Password or TinkerTool Systems) it seems a bit expensive at 35$ in my opinion. [alert admin]
