Parallels Desktop 5.0 (Mac OS X)
Poor performance - poor incremental features ![]()

The parallels people seem to have delivered (to me at least) a reworked GUI in the mac application but little other change. They have added funky animations and new icons and screens. Unfortunately to me, the performance is worse than v4. Decidedly worse. As always they add options and turn them on by default. If I want virtual disk auto compression I want to be able to turn it on rather than have to scramble to turn it off! Overall I am not impressed. [alert admin]

AliasHerder 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Works pretty well. You drag a directory on it and it resolves all aliases and allows you to replace the aliases with the original file. I would prefer it to also allow individual aliases to be dropped on - I dont get why you cant do this?! [alert admin]

Indigo 4.0.2 (Mac OS X)
While not perfect this is a pretty cool app. Within an hour I had quite a setup going. Some elements of the GUI are a bit weird and less than clear. However all in all it works well and is VERY robust - no hangs or crashes. [alert admin]

I suffer from: Parallels application that wont launch VM's - click start, nothing happens Paralles application that wont quit - shutdown the PC environment, choose quit from the menu, nothing happens Exceedingly poor performance (at times) within Parallels for no apparent reason. Not a bar on the previous version that worked relatively well, I may yet downgrade. I am hoping week on week for a new build but NOTHING! [alert admin]

Safari 4 Modifier 0.1 (Mac OS X)
If you could find a way to set the google country that the search box uses I would pay good money for that! With all the internationalisation in MacOS X I am frustrated that you cant specify the country for google. Very dull! I used to run acid search but that broke! [alert admin]

Freeway Pro 5.3.2 (Mac OS X)
Does it do multiple levels of undo yet?
This has been something that has held me back from spending any more money on this product! Multiple undo inability coupled with general beta-ness of most versions until they get into high revision numbers. That said, if you want to hack up a site its a fair tool. [alert admin]

I have been running 3 for well over a year.I run XP on NTFS on a Bootcamp partition.
Running fairly OK other than really really slow shutdowns at times and other random slowness. But largely stable. So I try to upgrade to v4.
First attempt hangs and hoses the vm file so I try again. Success!
Er no. Having shutdown the VM and quit parallels to make sure the set-up has stuck (been caught with this before)... I could not restart the VM - it does not see the bootcamp disk.
OK contact support.
So far the belated answers have been "activate XP", "install something on the partition"...
Hmm, the partition running XP works perfectly fine under bootcamp and did under 3, perhaps there is a reading comprehension issue at the outsourced support team?
Just as well I have access at work to a terminal services environment so I can keep working!
BTW has anyone successfully downgraded back to 3?

ObjectTools X 2.5b2 (Mac OS X)
Well, nearly anyway - great plugin for allowing the developer to have a non table, structured record (like all other languages). When used with XML this is a great utility. [alert admin]

Webmin 1.430 (Mac OS X)
Run the upgrade option in Webmin to update, dont install from here ![]()

If you already have Webmin you should run the updater inside Webmin rather than download this installer which is presumably good for NEW installs of Webmin. Its a useful tool which I have had no problem with to speak of. Its a nice way to do BIND on a workstation build of X (as opposed to a server build) as well as various other modules, and its free - whats not to like? Pretty clever. [alert admin]

Carbon Copy Cloner 3.1.1 (Mac OS X)
Adware supported! I dont want banner ads.
Suddenly I am seeing advertising banners in this application! I did not authorise this, I did not ask for this, I do not want this. Pretty sneaky! I donated to use the product some time ago. Somewhat unimpressed by this development! [alert admin]

Checked your disk is not corrupted using disk tools? It always makes me laugh when people post 'this app did all this bad stuff' messages. Usually in my experience a machine upon which an app appears to be badly behaving is actually the cause not the outcome of the bad behaviour.

You demand PPC version of FREE software
Oh dear, if you are in such bad shape you cant afford an Intel mac then dont b*tch that the developer sucks for not hiring PPC developers to make you a release of this FREE software for PPC. Even a dumb ars3 would know that developing a very very codex dependent application is pretty cpu/chipset dependent. Presumably the latest INTEL version really only offers INTEL benefits so wrapping up PPC code into the release is unlikely to…

Do you have permissions on the directories
Do you have read permissions on the directories you are copying from, and write permissions on the directories you are writing to? Its not the most intuitive or elegant app but if my permissions are clean (Disk Utility, repair permissions) I generally have no problem. Usually the problems I have are where some directory has bogus permissions stopping cs from doing its thing.

VT badges as Beta so whats your issue?
Poster complains VT posts Betas, but it is badged as beta under licence. Thought is required before downloading and installing software. If you cant read, dont use VT and dont download and install what you dont understand.

Where are the bug fix releases? Or are we waiting for v5 which will be as flakey as v4?

Sorry, but your sweeping statement about who you think will have problems is wrong. My build is very vanilla and I had serious issues merely upgrading to v4, let alone using it. Hopefully this and the previous public release have fixed things. I am holding out a little longer to retry my upgrade.

After a day running with a downgrade to v3 after a failed v4 upgrade, I can say it is safe to downgrade following the steps outlined above.

Answer to self - yes you can downgrade
Launch the v4 DMG Run uninstaller Restart the mac (belts and braces time) Install v3 from DMG Launch v3 - hey my old config is still seen - wahoo Launch the machine Try to install tools from menu, does not seem to get anywhere. Restart XP Try to install tools again - the tools installer launches, run completes Restart XP Test networking etc - all seems fine! Now to wait for v4 to be sorted out!

Tech support came back to me with an answer that I needed to activate windows with MS. Shame my issue was that parallels was nolonger allowing me to use boot camp drive. I dont mind outsourcing but I do mind if they outsource to squirrels and those squirrels cant read or write in english.
