Intuit QuickBooks 2009 (Mac OS X)

Updating sales tax took us hours of debugging

Sales taxes are going up all over the country. Updating our sales tax in QB 2009 was a time-consuming ordeal, and the help system is useless on this issue. When you update your sales tax, you can't update the current sales tax item because you're risking having your previous invoices recalculated. You have to create a new one. But QB by default will link the new sales tax item to the Franchise Tax Board for California, or the state tax agency in your state. Unless you substitute the Franchise Tax Board with an account in your own Chart of Accounts, you can't identify the sales tax amount on your future invoices with a label, like "Sales Tax." In other words, the sales tax amount will print below the other lines on the invoice with no label. Madness. Crazymaking. Sure wish my business could find a better alternative to Quickbooks. eFax Messenger 3.1.10 (Mac OS X)

Crashes on Leopard (10.5.6)

Application is ancient---no updates since 2004! Completely unstable under Leopard. eFax should be ashamed they haven't updated this program in over 5 years. My business has paid them a lot of money since then, and the least they can do for their customers is make sure that their software won't crash under the latest version of OS X. [alert admin]

PTHPasteboard PRO 4.4.0 (Mac OS X)

Looks like a DEAD app to me!

As I noted in my comments on the free version a couple of months ago, there have been NO updates in a over a year now--not even bug fixes, and several fixes discussed in other posts below and in the other Versiontracker forum are badly needed. Moreover, links on the developer's site supposed to go to their discussion forum go to other places. One very annoying aspect is that it's not possible to reduce the size of the "ladder" (window) without also shrinking the text size. If a user attempts to display fewer than the top 6 cells in the array, the characters are so flattened that they're unreadable. This makes the app a bad choice for anybody attempting to copy and paste frequently on a small screen, such as on a laptop. I'm not aware of a reason why this would be difficult to modify in the code. Neither does it seem to be possible to substitute another plain-text font, like Courier, for the poorly-readable plain-text font that is displayed (Monaco, perhaps). This is never the sort of situation registered, paying customers like me are happy to see. Time to start looking for alternatives, apparently. [alert admin]

Transmission 1.40 (Mac OS X)

May Trigger Spotlight 100% CPU Usage by MD Processes

After upgrading to Leopard I switched to Miro from Transmission, an otherwise excellent application which seemed to trigger several runaway Spotlight MD processes, possibly because Spotlight in 10.5.5 may have trouble with incompletely downloaded Transmission torrent files. After losing almost a full day's worth of work time debugging the issue, I stopped using Transmission and haven't had any trouble since. Except for the key omission that Transmission doesn't automatically download torrent files, I would rather be using it than Miro, with its mysterious interface, or Vuze, which is a slow, bloated, complicated Java app that wasn't stable on my system and required a reinstallation before it functioned. On Tiger, Transmission functioned flawlessly. I'll try it again on Leopard in a few months. [alert admin]

Miro 1.2.8 (Mac OS X)

Rough, Tough Learning Curve

After upgrading to Leopard I switched to Miro from Transmission, which seemed to cause several runaway Spotlight MD processes, possibly because Spotlight in 10.5.5 has trouble with incompletely downloaded Transmission torrent files. I stopped using Transmission and haven't had any trouble since. But the Miro learning curve is long and challenging. I'm on my 2nd week with Miro and still can't get it to automatically download files. On my system, the "Auto Download: New" drop-down menu doesn't seem to function, and unless one manually searches under the "Items in this Channel" Ajax drop-down section, one won't see all the new available downloads. The concept behind Miro of a single media player for all file types is quite admirable. But this is in no way an "at-a-glance" interface, and it seems incredibly counterintuitive and frustrating. MainMenu 1.7.3 (Mac OS X)

IF they're gone, it's a shame. (Website, downloads still work.)

This is one of the best OSX utilities available at any price. The developers really "get it," especially in the elegant way they've made multiple batch processes followed by actions like restarts so easy and fast to set up. The quick menu bar access, Growl support and real-time log reporting are also excellent features that professionals appreciate. My design shop has used MainMenu daily on several computers, including new 8-core Mac Pros, as well as PowerBooks and G5s since March of '08, saving Onyx for tougher or more comprehensive maintenance situations. If MM's developers are actually out of business even though their website and downloads continue to be active, it will be quite a shame and a great loss for the growing community of MM users who were eagerly anticipating updates to the program. It will also be a lost business opportunity for the developers who could have easily offered a paid version, with only a few more added features and upgraded support, that could have been very successful at a nominal price. iGTD 1.4.5.6 (Mac OS X)

Site Still Unavailable

with the annoying message "404 Not Found: The request /downloads/iGTD.dmg was not found on this server." Apparently I'll be working instead with the highly-praised new application Things in the meantime, available as freeware at http://culturedcode.com/things/ and at http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/33742. I was referred to Things by my business partner, who read a very positive review over at 43 Folders. I just watched their web video and Things looks promising. [alert admin]

RealPlayer 11 build 631 (Mac OS X)

Left Channel Only!

Like those posting downthread, we can only hear the left channel when listening to streams at work. Here's one tip I found over at RealPlayer support: "A workaround until Real fixes this issue is to use the Audio MIDI Setup utility, which can be found under the /Applications/Utilities folder. Set the output to 1 channel - 16 bits prior to starting the stream and it'll play in both speakers/headphones. Unfortunately, that means the rest of your system is set to monaural sound until you change that back again. You may also want to make sure that your sound is set to 44100 Hz or 48000 Hz after exiting Real Player for maximum fidelity in other applications." http://real.lithium.com/real/board/message?board.id=realplayer&message.id=19984 Meanwhile, let's hope the folks at Real move this bug to the top of their priority list. But PDFPen Pro doesn't do OCR

I'm not sure why you're mentioning PDFPen Pro in connection with ReadIris. Are you thinking of some other application? It doesn't appear that there are any references to OCR on the developer's site.
