SoundConverter 20071211 (Mac OS X)
O.K. you get the demo. Works fine. Batch converts over-sampled MP3s that are a near gigabyte size, down to a normal somewhat audiophile 192kbs, and this wonderful program does it fine, and it converts weird formats too, to MP3s. Ever heard of an "OGG player"? Well, they exist. But I don't want OGG. And the iPod wont play certain sample rates. So after paying, and updating in desperation, today I discover that like comments from years ago on this site, it STILL wont convert simple m4a (iPod audio/video format) to MP3. Some crazy friend converted an old album at a sample rate of almost 1000 so it filled a whole DVD. Sound converter quickly skipped to file 4 of 20 and then did a very quick conversion of each of the rest, leading to...nothing. No new files were created at all. So...it's certainly worth what you pay now, but a year ago it was almost 3X the price. The developer's site has no FORUM like is now the norm for most any (even free) software, and a Google search indeed leads to the same problem that is from what I can tell, AT LEAST TWO YEARS OLD. All the programmer would need to do is use an AppleScript command to get iTunes to do the m4a to MP3 conversion, then move the files. I get the feeling that this thing is internally held together with duct tape, despite the slick interface. [alert admin]
