StuffIt Expander 12.0.1 (Mac OS X)
1. Here is the best link for downloading the expander, without having to give up your email address:
Stuffit Expander Download
Notice that the link also includes localized and prior versions, because not everyone is a native English speaker, nor are we all using Leopard. Bookmark it.
2. Why do people continue to comment about Stuffit Standard and Stuffit Deluxe here? This entry is for Stuffit Expander only, which most of us still need to use because of legacy compressed archives. Even if people completely stopped using Stuffit today to create new archives, we would still need the expander to be able to get access to all the archives that have been created over the last 15 years. I don't see a reason to bash the company because of the expander. It's free, it works, and when there's a bug or a problem, they fix it.
3. The built-in UNarchive function of OS X is not all that great. It has some annoying limitations that often cause people to prefer using third-party interfaces or utilities like GUI Tar, The Unarchiver, and yes, even Stuffit Expander. I don't use Stuffit to create archives, but I sure am thankful for the expander, which I think is a good multi-unarchiver. People seem to forget that it doesn't just expand .sit/.sitx, but just about everything else, too. In fact, even if there were no more .sit/.sitx files, I might still continue using the expander, because it works the way I like, which neither the built-in OS X unarchiver nor any of the other free utilities are quite able to match. OnyX 1.7.0 (Mac OS X)
1. In the automation window, when executing items which have multiple parts in their normal tab (i.e., the internet cache has 7 checkboxes under cleaning, but only 1 box under automation), does automation execute tasks as if every box was checked, or does it execute based upon the boxes which are checked under the standard tab? In other words, if under cleaning, I have 'form values' UNchecked for internet cache cleaning, when I go to the automation tab, will those values be respected (the forms values will NOT be cleared)? 2. Shouldn't permissions repair run after the maintenance scripts, because sometimes, the scripts mess up certain permissions themselves? 3. How come resetting the spotlight index is missing from the reset list under automation? 4. How come force emtpying the trash and deleting temporary and obsolete items are not under automation? 5. If you're going to remove the execute all button from the maintenance and cleaning tabs, then you need to make sure that the automation tab is full and complete, with no missing options. Many of us like to be able to set our options and give our system a very deep clean and reset with the push of a single button, and we don't want to have to do this several times. [alert admin]

Midgard CMS 1.7.5.1 (Mac OS X)
I did a recent search in DarwinPorts, and it seems we finally have a sane way to install this. Four packages will pop up if you do a 'port search midgard': midgard-apache2 midgard-core midgard-data midgard-php4 Currently, DP has version 1.7.4, which isn't the absolute latest, but that's OK with me. Anything is better than the insane package installer the developers came up with. [alert admin]

StuffIt Expander 10.0.2 (Mac OS X)
[My apologies. The links in my previous post were wrong. These work.] 1. Unless you have a specific need for the features found in version 10, you should stick with version 9, which works perfectly well under 10.4. Very few people have any compelling reason to upgrade, other than habit: ftp://ftp.allume.com/pub/archive/mac/Stuffit_Expander/stuffit_exp_902_x_install.dmg 2. Once again, you can obtain the new version directly, without going to the Allume web site or through any registration process: ftp://ftp.allume.com/pub/pub/mac/Stuffit/For_MacOS_10.3_and_later/stuffit_exp_1002_install.dmg 3. The cause of the breakage in Norton Antivirus was already discovered and posted in the MacFixit forums: http://www.macfixitforums.com/php/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=xutilities&Number=752161&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=31&fpart=1 [alert admin]

VersionTracker Pro 4.0.1 (Mac OS X)
On the VT web site, Linotype FontExplorer X is showing the current version of 1.0fc4, which I have installed. However, within the VTPro application, the entry for the program doesn't update, and it still shows version 1.0fc3, and because of the mismatch, lists my version as out of date. [alert admin]

WARNING: Do NOT Modify Your System!
As I already explained, anyone can install 1.5, and there's no problem with that. When you do, 1.4.2 will remain the default, and through the Java Preferences application, you can make some LIMITED changes so that 1.5 will be used with SOME apps. Going beyond that and making even more changes, or altering your system in any sort of permanent manner is only for ADVANCED users, period. It's not documented because Apple doesn't want you…

WARNING: Do NOT Modify Your System!
For people who know absolutely nothing about UNIX, you most likely have little use for this version of Java in the first place. Why are you trying to install it? Most of the people who have a need to make it the default are developers and users of very advanced applications. The average person can simply install it and then leave it alone. Only special applications that need version 1.5 will make use of it,…
