Windows Media Player 7.1.3 (Mac OS 9)

This MS virus

cannot be given five stars because it's "as good as" another weak and poorly implemented application. Would you give a Yugo five stars because it's at least as decent as a Gremlin? Rate it based on its individual performance, held to a decent average standard rather than an artificial construct that skews the actual rating. Don't make this product look better than it actually is. [alert admin]

EverQuest 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Unfortunately

you can't get it yet. I was a beta tester, and in-game announcements flew the last few days - "See you all on the 23rd!" I thought I was going to be in Al'Kabor two days ago - but my order still says backorder, and I was last quoted June 7th! [alert admin]

PithHelmet 0.6.1 (Mac OS X)

Saviour

Most excellent. This code needs some exposure so more people know about it. It turns sites like ps2.ign.com back into something recognizable as a web site. Although many think this should be built-in, I believe it could be problematic for corporate software versus independent developers. Despite the fact that users do not like ads, and internet advertising has proved to be less than successful, companies would rather keep trying to force old methods into working rather than use creative thinking to develop a new paradigm. If Apple builds in ad blocking, stepping rather harshly on ad-maker's toes, there could be consequences not applicable to an individual creator. For example, Apple could suffer company to company relationship problems, or sites might become "incompatible" with Safari in retribution. [alert admin]

PianistEnvy X 1.6 (Mac OS X)

Hmm....

If we could rate things like icons and names, this would get five stars for the name. It doesn't cost a lot, but it doesn't do a lot. It might be worth it with MIDI keyboard support. [alert admin]

UnearthedBookmarks 1.6 (Mac OS X)

Java - slow.…

Needs one sample website instead of the current bunch of questionably useful ones included. Slow removal of URLs one at a time should be addressed immediately. No included documentation. URLs should not have to be specified in full format - e.g. "http://www.versiontracker.com" rather than "versiontracker.com." Column resizing does not work. No note on whether the program must be left open for checking to work. Needs some work. [alert admin]

YuBurner 0.6.0 (Mac OS X)

I don't think…

a 205K piece of freeware is positioned as a Toast competitor, but it is an alternative to Toast, as they are both CD burners. There's a difference between a competitor and an alternative, and this serves me fine as an alternate to Toast - for what I want to do. A review is based on using the software. This does exactly what it purports to do. It's a fast easy way to do multisession discs. Translation needs a little help. What bugs did you find? The only problem I had is if you cancel a burn, and tell the Finder to ignore the inserted disc, YuBurner can't use the burner until you restart the app. But if you ignore a disc, the only way to get it out is open Disk Utility, click on it there, and choose eject, which to me is not very good behaviour on the Finder's part...  [alert admin]
