OpenArena for Mac 0.6.0jack1 (Mac OS X)

Rockin'

I already know about OA on Linux, and it's great to be able to play it on the Mac. The key to getting it working in OS X is to grab the v0.6 Linux tarball from the official site (openarena.ws) and decompress it to obtain a directory where you can simply drop the ioquake3 app in. Of course, you can rename the directory to...OpenArena if you like. You can also delete everything inside the directory except for baseoa and the ioquake3 app. Be sure to read the wiki... Gameplay is pretty solid for a basic port, although there are a few missing things...none of them showstoppers in any way. The 0.7.0 port is currently in development as of this review. Did I mention that it is FREE? [alert admin]

Google Notifier 1.9.63 (Mac OS X)

Has Never Worked

I installed the Notifier on multiple Macs...I've never been able to login. I keep getting "Sign in failed (untrusted server certificate)." [alert admin]

THE BEST EVER!!!

Dig into the package itself (might be against the EULA) for a good laugh. ;-) [alert admin]

PithHelmet 2.6.3 (Mac OS X)

Temp Workaround.

Workaround: Open the info.plist files inside the /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/PithHelmet.bundle package. Change MaxBundleVersion to 417.8 and save. [alert admin]

X Resource Graph 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Simply Awesome.

I'm quite surprised that this fine piece of software is free given its feature-rich preferences. My only complaint is the program's inability to remember the minimized state (just the title bar) between launches. [alert admin]

Clean Caches 1.3 (Mac OS X)

You Must be Joking.

I can think of an existing app that's already in Mac OS X that does the same thing...the Finder. If you can't find your way to ~/Library/Caches or /Library/Caches and delete the problematic files then you need your head checked. Deleting system caches will cause more headaches than it's worth. It's not "routine maintenance." Read the side-effects of "cleaning" system caches. PS...might want to fix the spelling in the paths, as they are case-sensitive. [alert admin]

PithHelmet 2.6.1 (Mac OS X)

Temporary Fix.

1. Close Safari. 2. Navigate to /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/PithHelmet.bundle. 3. Open bundle and go to Contents. 4. Open info.plist - You can use either Property List Editor or TextEdit. 5. Locate BundleIdentifier for com.apple.Safari. 6. Change BOTH MaxBundleVersion AND MinBundleVersion to 416.12. 7. Save and relaunch Safari. This should work until an official update is available. Adobe Reader 7.0.5 (Mac OS X)

NO STANDALONE.

The standalone for 7.0.3 is at
http://ardownload.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/mac/7x/7.0.3/misc/Adobe-Rdr_703_Upd_Pkg.dmg

For 7.0.1 and 7.0.2 it's easy...you change the "7.0.3" and "703" to "7.0.2" and "702," etc. You would assume the same with 7.0.5. Not so. As of this posting, Adobe has intentionally refused to include the standalone, forcing you to go through AUM, which does NOT work in 10.4.2. [alert admin]

Adobe Reader 7.0.3 (Mac OS X)

Nightmare to Install Fresh.

So this is what it must be like to install programs on Windows. I tried to initially download Adobe 7.0.3 thinking that it would install the full version. Nope, it's just an updater. No problem, head over to Adobe's site to get the full version. What I got instead was an installer for an update manager which would then turn around and download the full version! Stupid. Absolutely stupid. Of course, the installer downloaded after a good twenty minutes and I was notified that it was corrupted. Fortunately, I came over here and found the direct link to the full version image. Once that worked out for me, I tried to use the updater and found that not only it required 7.0.2, I would have to install 7.0.1 just to get to 7.0.2 and THEN apply the 7.0.3 updater! Well, it would be great to use the built-in update manager if it didn't crash on launch every time... I found the standalone updaters and manually applied all of the updates. All this for a damn PDF viewer. Not to mention bloated - weighing in at just over 100 MB. Oh yeah, it's slow too. Preview runs circles around it. Now if Preview can get up to par with Acrobat feature for feature, there would be no need for this bloated piece of junk. Be ready to tear your hair out if you're starting with the downloading of the full Reader and attempting to use AUM in 10.4.2. To actually pay for the full version of this crap is an even bigger joke. [alert admin]

From the Developer Himself.

Sorry guys. =( ------------ As many astute users have noticed, PithHelmet 2.6.3 does not work in Safari 2.0.3, included with the OS X 10.4.4 update. I'm working on it - don't worry. While I'm at it, I should mention that PithHelmet doesn't run on Intel based Macs (not that most of you would have one yet). Oh, another cautionary note - if you have tried to "hack" your copy of PithHelmet to try and make it work with…

You Must be Joking.

"Where to begin. You broke the license agreement. More than once. You admitted to doing so. _Not_ a great idea.." Don't make me laugh and don't threaten me (I'd really love to see your EULA try to stand up on legal grounds). Really, anyone can easily look at the package for themselves (Show Package Contents) and see for themselves. It doesn't take a computing genius to do so because OS X by default already…

You Must be Joking.

You really are full of yourself. Tell you what, I downloaded your dmg.zip twice (why you packaged it twice like that is beyond me) since the first time around it refused to mount...are you going to boast about the two added hits to your download counter? Now let's move onto your wonderful EULA. I don't even know where to begin in pointing out the ridiculousness of it. I'll let others read it and judge for…

Same here.

I had TTP kill my hard drive twice during the volume structure "optimization." DiskWarrior couldn't do anything for me. Fortunately, I had backups.

AUM Crashes When It Attempts to Download.

I've been able to reproduce this problem on three machines running 10.4.2 with different users. It works fine on the two machines running 10.3.9. I've tried just about every troubleshooting measure I could think of.

If It Makes You Feel Better...

TechTool killed my hard drive not once, but twice. Completely corrupted the directory structure while using the eDrive in both instances. The second time around I bought DW and even it could not bring my files back. Thankfully I backed up so all was not lost. The only reason why I bought TT was because at the time it was the only utility compatible with Panther. I guess I should have waited.

...thanks

I use OnyX because it is FREEWARE. If you are happy to pay, may I suggest *censored*tail. I don't support so-called "shareware" developers who feed off the ignorance of Mac users unwilling to learn the Terminal for maintenance commands then throw in a few "perks" in order to justify charging for their apps when there are other alternatives that do the same for...FREE.
