Evernote 1.1.5 (Mac OS X)
I love having a button in Firefox I can click to save a full copy of a web page. I love being able to take video snaps and save them to Evernote, or to take a picture with my phone and e-mail it to my Evernote account. I love that Evernote will scan the photos or scanned documents for text and will index everything it can recognize!! Fantastic. I like having my data synced to the web as well; a nice backup mechanism. [alert admin]

Yep 1.6.4 (Mac OS X)
Indispensible for quickly finding PDFs ![]()

The minute I saw this I knew I wanted it! The price is a bit steep, but to me, the benefits are well worth it. The interface is slick and clean, very much like iPhoto or Mail. I love the fact that I can open a PDF in Preview or whatever, Mail it (and I can set what mail application to use in preferences, which, being an Entourage user, I love!), open it to full screen, etc. Being able to specify authors, and to add identifying tags, is going to be a big help in organizing my hundreds of PDFs. Did I say hundreds? Yep helped me discover that I have 2283 of them scattered all over the place. I was stunned by how fast it found them all. I love the automatic tagging that Yep does; very helpful. Showing all the info about a selected document is wonderful, saves steps, and the "loupe" is great for quickly zeroing in on a document to get a specific snippet of information. I have the feeling this is one application I will be using for years to come. [alert admin]

Parallels Desktop 3.0 Build 4128.0 (Mac OS X)
Crashes when installing its toolbox ![]()

I updated from the previous version, paying for the touted new features. I'd had no significant problems with the earlier version, running XP in several incarnations. When I opened Parallels for the first time this time around, it began to install its toolbox, and crashed when about 80% complete. I cannot get it past this phase in my admin user. I have a non-admin user; that comes up and reports that it can't attach hardware because it lacks privileges (I'm not sure what it wants to do; probably run the toolbox install!). I am able to run Internet Explorer and browse the web with the non-admin user, which is good. But I cannot get the admin account to work. I may try deleting it and setting up a new user...but if I am not an admin, I'm not sure how I can do that. I'm discouraged by the negative reports about support, or lack of it, here. [alert admin]

ohmiGene 1.49.31 (Mac OS X)
I have an Intel Mac and would like to try out this software. However, to obtain the Intel version, I must pay $40 before I can download. That's nuts! Why would I pay for something when I can't even see what it does before I pay? I think the developer needs to provide a time-limited demo version. [alert admin]

Thinking Rock 1.2.2 (Mac OS X)
I've been using TR for about 3 weeks now, and I am loving it. Just downloaded the latest, which has a couple of features I have seen requested in the past 3 weeks on the forum. So this product is being actively developed and the developers are responsive to requests. This is the first software I've found that makes the GTD approach work for me. And you can't beat the price! Sandvox 1.0.4 (Mac OS X)
Very useful; needs more flexibility ![]()

I'm using the Pro version, FWIW. I had an urgent request to throw together a website in less than a week, in my spare time no less, not my regular job. And Sandvox enabled me to do it. Everyone concerned was amazed at how quickly I could put together a great-looking, very functional site, with e-mail feedback forms, a picture gallery, and some other content. At first I was dismayed that Sandvox has no "insert list" command. But I discovered that I could use the Raw HTML pagelet to insert a formatted list; Sandvox then automatically created new list items as I would press Return at the end of a list item. I even found the method documented on their site. The code that Sandvox generates is remarkably clean (unlike such things as Dreamweaver, iWeb, or [gag!] Microsoft Word) and relatively easy to edit post-publishing if you know CSS and HTML and want to tweak the site a bit. Unfortunately, your manual changes do not show up in Sandvox, so if you use this method you need to create your site with Sandvox and then maintain it in BBEdit or TextMate or something like that. An alternative approach is to duplicate a template and then customize the template; Karelia provides instructions on how to do that. With a customized template, you can then continue to maintain the site in Sandvox. It would be nice to be able to directly apply Heading tags, insert "alt" text for images and title attributes to links. [alert admin]

CrossOver 6.0b1 (Mac OS X)
Unable to report bugs for this version
I've tried a Windows app I want to use, Genbox (genealogy software). It opens, but crashes the moment I search for a record. I've tried to report this to the vendor, but their bug reporting page is "closed". It directs me to the "ticket" page, but that is restricted to the Linux version. So, apparently, there is no way to report bugs for the Mac version. Does this imply that there will be no further support for it?? [alert admin]

Air Compare Widget 1.3 (Mac OS X)
When I enter anything in the widget, it puts it all into the Destination field; a web page appears complaining that the Departure info was incorrectly formatted. There is no indication of how data is to be formatted. I don't see anywhere to input dates.... In short, I find this useless. [alert admin]

FinderPop 1.9.9 beta 4 (Mac OS X)
Dropping file on app does not work for me
I tried selecting an HTML file on my desktop, then control-clicked it, selected BBEdit in the FinderPop menu; nothing happened. With nothing selected, BBEdit came forward. Tried also with an RTF file and Mellel; again, nothing. Is this unique to me? (I have a lot of junk installed!) [alert admin]

On the contrary: I agree with the previous reviewer. The ability to review what the app is going to do before committing is invaluable and, I have no doubt, can save your bacon by preventing stupid mistakes. I love this program.

Mac OS X should be as secure as you say, but it isn't, in my experience. I've had browsers...Safari and Firefox both..take over my Intel Mac so completely that all I see is the spinning rainbow. There is no response whatsoever to keyboard or mouse, and no recourse but to power off and restart. So the person reporting the problem may not be as ignorant as you naively suppose.

Just last week (11/8/06), I had a message in response to an inquiry to Alsoft. They told me, "Our programmers are in the final stages of
testing and we hope to begin shipping the CD very shortly. "
Time will tell how well they live up to the "very shortly," but this is promising.

Here it is August 20, 2006, and still no Universal Binary, still no version that will work on Intel Macs. And with Leopard having announced Spaces, I now question whether Codetek will continue to develop this at all. You Control Desktops, however, does work on an Intel Mac.

You may want to try You Control Desktops. It's running great, is at v2.0, and is being supported. I don't know how it will fare once Leopard comes out with Spaces included, but if you want Virtual Desktops on Tiger, this is the way to go.

Won't be trying this product yet
I checked with SmileOnMyMac support, and they confirm that TextExpander conflicts with CopyPaste even when the yType (text replacement) feature is turned off, and express uncertainty as to whether the conflict can be fixed. I rely so heavily on CopyPaste that I won't even bother to turn it off to try TextExpander. I'd like the ability to insert graphics with a mnemonic set of keys, but that's not enough to woo me away from CopyPaste. If…

I have v1.4, and also have the problem with repeating events showing up for every day, despite being monthly events. I ONE TIME, for a second, saw an "i" appear in the lower right corner, but then it disappeared, and I have been unable to see if the widget has any configuration options. I have disabled it, since it is currently unusable.

This thread of replies makes my point! How are we, new to the program, to know that "Unwrap tag" means to delete a tag? It may be obvious to the developer, but I'd never have guessed it. Intuitive, Goodpage is not. It needs documentation. I've also recently tried out "Style Master" for editing CSS files. Much easier to comprehend, in my book, and it comes with a comprehensive tutorial to boot! It edits only the CSS…

The author of this comment must never have used EZNote under OS 9. John Holder offered both Scrapit and EZNote for OS 9, and EZNote was one of my all-time-favorite applications! I've missed it ever since I moved to OS X, and attempted in vain to replace it. I've written to John a half-dozen times asking if, or when, he would get EZNote ready for OS X. I am delighted that he has, at long…

You mention being stuck with Retrospect for incremental backups. Not so. "Tri-Backup" does very nice incrementals, with several flavors. See it at http://www.tri-edre.com/english/tribackup.html
