Skype 2.6.0.184 (Mac OS X)

Mac platform betas getting worse

This is a mail i just sent to Skype: I would like to know what has gone wrong with your mac development team. I've been a long time Skype user, in fact I have evangelised your service to friends, now your customers, because I was so impressed with your service. Of late however, the betas you are putting out are just horrible. 2.6.0.182 was simply unusable, very unstable (if a contact came online it would crash, when Skype Out connected it would crash, a piece of garbage really). The current version - 2.6.0.184 is not quite so unstable, but sound quality is awful, and the Skype phone I purchased 15 months ago, and which worked flawlessly with earlier betas, is now a pain to use because Skype takes over the audio input and keeps switching it down to minimum for some reason, making it inaudible at the other end. In system preferences you can see this happening - I drag the slider up to an acceptable level, and Skype pulls it back down again making the simple business of a phone call an exercise in stress management at both ends! Having just completed such a call, I just clicked on the open browser (Firefox) and that crashed - you are putting out sub-standard software, it's supposed to be beta not alpha, and I would like to know what is going on. Do you have a quality control department? In my experience when betas go backwards it is a sign that the developers are no longer bothering with it, time to look for alternatives. I don't know if your purchase by e-Bay is anything to with this, if some corporate executive has decided to abandon the Mac platform (a pretty foolish move if that was the case as the platform is expanding rapidly), or whether it is just sloppiness in your dev team, but this is simply unacceptable. VOIP is a maturing market, competitors are coming on stream, and although I have no desire to abandon Skype if you do not get your act together I will be left with no choice. I should point out that this is only audio, I have no webcam and hence do not use video. At the very least you should leave the latest usable beta available on your site, as many do, as i do, overwrite the old version with the new. I want some software I can use people, come on! Running OS 10.3.9 btw, and I will be posting this mail on both MacUpdate and VersionTracker to warn others of your current mac malaise. Please get your act together. Sincerely, [alert admin]

Image Disturb 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Getting error message

When I try to open the app I get the following error message: Uncaught exception in main method: java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError: util/ExampleFileFilter (Unsupported major.minor version 49.0) iMac (PPC), 10.3.9; Java 1.4 [alert admin]

MacEtegami 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Works with 10.3.9 (PPC)

Despite the info above, this app does work with 10.3.9 on a PPC Mac (Intel 10.4 only). It is a small simple app, but it is nicely done, and gave me pleasing results, and this just with the mouse, not a tablet. [alert admin]

iTheater 0.1.2 (Mac OS X)

Won't open in 10.3.9

The system requirements say version 0.1.2 works with 10.3, but it just bounces twice in the dock and doesn't open. iMac G4800, 10.3.9. [alert admin]

Skype 1.3.0.8 (Mac OS X)

The future of telephony!

I agree with AusiDeer - Skype has been nothing but good for me. The app has never crashed on my 800 G4 iMac, (10.3.9); the sound quality on Skype-to-Skype has been phenomenal, almost FM quality; the file exchange is a quick and easy way to send large files and with SkypeOut I can call just about any landline phone in the world for 2¢ a minute day or night (mobiles cost more). I was disappointed to see the sellout to eBay, but if they maintain standards I don't see that it makes much difference really. What! You're still paying phone bills? [alert admin]

KnotPlot 15Jul05 (Mac OS X)

Serious contender for Freeware of the Year!

This wonderful app just keeps getting better and better. There are so many creative options and variations possible I find myself playing with it for hours at a time, leaving me with a folder of interesting and beautiful images sitting on my desktop afterwards. It has run without any problems on my G4 800 iMac and I cannot recommend this joyous bit of software highly enough. The developer's site is a 'must visit' too. Great stuff! [alert admin]

Responsive developer - problem solved

Just to reply to my own thread... Got a mail back from Oli (the developer) within an hour of mailing him with a link to 1.1c which is working perfectly. Link here: http://olivier.euromobile.ch/imdisturb/ImDisturb/Download/ImDisturb_OsX_1.1c.zip I've spent the last couple of hours playing with it and it is a lot of fun! Kudos to the dev!
