Package Tracker 2.1.11 (Mac OS X)

Future development, etc.

Sent a note to VT editors, but as a FYI to users... It appears that Monkey Business Labs has become part of Magnetism Studios, and with a little digging it is possible to find it on their site (thanks to google). Here is their page on it: http://magnetismstudios.com/MonkeyBusinessLabs/PackageTracker Click Support, scroll down to FAQ, and you'll see comments about version 3, and the following: "Why hasn't Package Tracker been updated? Package Tracker proved to be a difficult widget to develop and maintain. Future versions of Package Tracker will be developed by a pursued separate company." So it sounds like SOMEONE is supposedly developing version 3, but its not clear who or when it might appear... Let's hope this handy widget hasn't died! [alert admin]

Canon PowerShot ImageBrowser 6.1.1 (Mac OS X)

Installer stalls while "searching" (10.5.2, MBP CoreDuo)

Like a comment below for an earlier version, the installer has been busy "searching" for quite some time now... Think I'll forget about this and stick with the verison I have. Sigh. [alert admin]

TreoAlarm 1.16 (Palm OS)

version 1.17

version 1.17 has been available since Jan 4 2007 (pretty sure I notified VT a few months after that, but they still list 1.16). See comment below, but this is a further update.
Again, I LOVE this program, but I'm not sure how much longer it will work (see below). There's no clear way to reach the developer that works, but I finally got ahold of him in summer 2007, after various users reported problems (google it). Server updates were done that left 'registration' functions out of order. He got it working again for already-registered-folks, and reported that with his new modifications, all registered users should get service at least until the end of 2007 (and maybe later if he changes the expiration date and/or repairs registration function). I'm not entirely clear on the underlying rationale, but he explicitly suggested that, due to problems w/the business model already established for TreoAlarm, he is "not sure how much longer TreoAlarm will run"... Discouraging, though business is business, after all. Again, I love this program, and benefit from it every day... I want it to succeed, or to move to an equivalant program that meets the same user needs. All that said, here is a significant flaw: I charge my Treo 650 at night, while I sleep. VERY FREQUENTLY, TreoAlarm fails to produce the expected auditory/visual alarm, and the issue is apparently related to plugging in the Treo650 for charging. YMMV!!!!!!! [alert admin]

TreoAlarm 1.16 (Palm OS)

Worked well for a year or two, but stopped...?

I loved this program, and when the trial period ended I immediately registered, and have used it daily since then. It has been a little prone to resetting my Treo 650 on occasion (usually this is if I have failed to click any of the buttons in response to the alarms), but no harm done. Well worth it for local weather conditions & forecast ready and waiting for me when it wakes me up, reminds me to get out the door in the morning, and when it silently checks for me in the evening... I always know what to tell the kids to wear when the weather is at my fingertips, ready to go. However, a week or so ago (late May 2007) I found I was unable to get any weather... all I get is a "welcome to TreoAlarm" message, w/instructions on how to specify zipcode, etc. Well, I've been setting it every day or two since then, using different zipcodes, but no joy... Googling reveals others suffering the same problem. I have to wonder whether a critical server or software has crashed, or perhaps support for this has folded... Hard to say! The support forum that they USED to have (forum.softwaretrenches.com) disapeared a while back, and the support address given on treoalarm.com yields no response (in the 2-3 times I tried it). But it looks like the treoalarm.com site is willing to take orders for new licenses, which presumably don't work either... Again, I LOVE this software, but what's a guy to do at this point? Recomended, but ONLY IF IT STARTS WORKING AGAIN! [alert admin]

PasswordWallet 4.0.0 (Mac OS X)

Upgrade pricing...

$15 vs full pricing of $20... The list of improvements looks long, but I don't see that much that is that significant from my perspective... I primarily use the palm version anyway, and that hasn't been updated... Think I'll pass on this one. Don't get me wrong, I do like PW. I do also agree with the overview just below on its strengths/weaknesses. [alert admin]

SpamCop 1.3.2 (Mac OS X)

MacIntel and/or 10.4.6 compatibility??

I've moved to a new MacBook Pro, with 10.4.6 (from an old G4 PowerMac that had been updated as far as ~10.4.6), and despite initial hiccoughs I got it installed without the bundle deactivation problem (thanks to Eric's instructions)... but still there is no preference panel and no menu item... I had gotten very comfortable with this great reporting facility, and now I find that not only am I unable (so far) to get it to work, but it's been end-of-lifed... Wow, what a bummer! Anyone gotten this to work with a MacIntel?? If so, HOW?? Thanks! [alert admin]

I would wait...

Forgot to mention, I wondered about your mention of the fact that you couldn't see contents of a user folder when logged in as another user. Isn't that how it's supposed to work? Security...? When logged in a "guest profile" I would not expect to see the contents of ANY other users!! That's a... FEATURE, not a BUG!!!! But as to whether or not you had problems with your main account after the install, I…

You would wait...

Wow, your home directory disappeared upon install and re-appear after uninstall? Bizarre! I see your identical comment over on macupdate.com too. I have to wonder whether this is a system-specific failure (e.g., interaction w/some other issues) rather than something that the SW might do to others, but I guess it comes down to... YMMV... Sorry you had a bad experience. My IT folks provide this for Macs, and I have not heard any issues w/it,…

2.0 Not working on MacPro

Very helpful post. And I agree 1000% with you... An invaluable utility, now (sadly) unavailable to me as a MacBook Pro user. I don't need this very frequently, but when I need it (for merging photos from 2+ cameras, as from a family vacation, where they are commonly not chronologically synchronized!), it's the best *free* tool I've found... I'd pay for it too... Same for at least one of their other CM products, which serves…

UPDATE

The support address given on the treoalarm.com site apears to be dead, based on the following mail server message: ===== A message that you sent has not yet been delivered to one or more of its recipients after 26 hours. The message has not yet been delivered to the following addresses: <support@treoalarm.com> host treoalarm.com[74.208.11.70]: mail transaction failed during initialization ===== Most unfortunate... Where can one find this sort of functionality now? A Treo-compatible program that independantly grabs weather/forecast data & ties into…

Worked well for a year or two, but stopped...?

Correction: version 1.17 has been out for some time, and that's the one that suddenly stopped working (presumably earlier versions also fail now).

Problem

Did myself in, it seems, as I set Bluetooth to disallow device connection... So I have no keyboard, no trackpad, and my pre-paired bluetooth mouse won't work... So no way to get control of anything (like re-installing, etc.)!!

Upgrade pricing...

Oh how 'witty' of you. It had NOT been updated at the time I wrote the prior note, or at least their site didn't indicate it. So allow me to further update my comments. Yes, there are some updates to the Palm version (which wasn't what the above comments were about). To me they are not that significant. I use the Palm version several times a week, and I just don't see that the "what's…

A little more info in HOW to make this work...

Make a copy of your "Mail" program (in Applications directory), name it something clear like "Mail Rosetta," select the new copy, use File>Get Info, then check the box to "open in Rosetta" (in the "General" subsection of the resulting info window)... WARNING: This copy will of course NOT be updated as you increment your OS version... So you'll need to periodically trash your Rosetta copy, make a new one, and proceed... or take your risk using…

Success! Open in Rosetta!

Read a tip about another program that didn't work right on a CoreDuo Mac, which involved making a copy of the program, and in the Get Info window of the copy clicking the box to open it in Rosetta (emulation of PPC)... Tried it and VOILA, the Report Spam item appeared once again, both in the standard menu and in the contextual menu! HOORAY, I can report SPAM painlessly again! So it does indeed seem that…
