Shimo 2.0 (Mac OS X)

unfortunately...

I just can't justify the cost for this product now that it is shareware. I loved the product as an alternative interface with the keychain integration and it really was a big time saver. I advocated it for my friends and my company, but I just don't need the new features. I wish there were a "lite" version that you could download or have the full version revert to once a demo period had passed that basically had the same features as 1.0.7. I did have problems with fast user switching with 1.x that seemed to be resolved with 2.0 and I was looking forward to automatic Back-to-My-Mac off/on but none of those are worth the price. This isn't a product I can talk my company into buying because the CiscoVPN client (that we already pay for) has all the functionality they care about. Saving some clicks isn't enough. I really do like 2.0 though and think its a solid, well-designed product, just not one I can justify paying for and the nag screen is way to obtrusive for me to use w/o paying for. Thanks, though. I'll keep by 1.0.7 until it breaks. [alert admin]

Shimo 1.0.7 (Mac OS X)

Try the beta

On the developer's site is a beta release of 2.0 that has been working great for me. If you are a .Mac user and have discovered its little incompatibility between Cisco VPN, Shimo will automate the stopping and restarting of Back to My Mac for you and it addressed hassles that I had with Shimo and Fast User Switching. Cisco VPN Client 4.9.01 (0100) (Mac OS X)

Works with Leopard and Tiger

This software works fine. I do, however, recommend using this with Shimo, an alternate GUI that gives you much more integration with the OS. For folks with Leopard and .Mac, give the beta of Shimo 2.0 a try. That addresses issues with Back to My Mac that I'm sure Cisco hasn't even thought about as well as longstanding pains with Fast User Switching. [alert admin]

Netscape X 9.0.0.4 (Mac OS X)

What is Netscape now?

I know they became AOL's low cost dialup NetZero competitor then I heard the name was being used as a Digg.com clone. The software is all rebranded mozilla.com now so I'm not sure why any of this exists. I'm honestly curious what Netscape is now. [alert admin]

The Music N*** 1.4 (Mac OS X)

Cool

Works. Does what it says. I'd like to have the UI dressed up a bit (brushed metal option to make it look more like iTunes?) and include a "Browse" feature like iTunes. It would also be cool if there was a way to make this run as screensaver or go full screen or float it and black out the desktop completely. Good product, through. Not sure how I feel about it stopping the Finder while in kiosk mode, but that's a minor concern. [alert admin]

Flip4Mac WMV 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)

works fine

It makes Quicktime work at least as well with WMV files as VLC. The browser plugin works at least as well and in some cases better than the WMP version. It doesn't support any more capabilities that the WMP for Mac app did so any files that were WM files made with some crazy extra codec like DivX or something still probably won't work. But it is a suitable replacement for WMP and, at least, we can look forward to this product being updated at some point in the future. I have had no problems whatsoever with crashing. I had some issues getting an mms stream to play in Firefox (worked fine in Safari) but that worked fine after I logged out and logged back in (even though the installer didn't tell me I needed to. The only issue is that the Quicktime progress bar and controls don't fill the same amount of space on a page as WMP so it doesn't look quite right but it works. Now if only they'd make a RealPlayer plugin. [alert admin]

Application Enhancer 1.4.4 (Mac OS X)

APE is going to be in every crash log no matter what

because it is active in order to effect every application. Try troubleshooting your APE modules before blaming APE as APE really doesn't do all that much. I've never had trouble with APE, only with some APE modules that, if they came from Unsanity, were quickly fixed. [alert admin]

AddressBookToCSV 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Camino .7

I have no idea why but the Import Contacts feature can only be found by using Camino 0.7. The newer release nor Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape, Safari, Omniweb or IE show it (IE won't even log in). Not even on IE for Windows. I have no idea why. It will even say that Camino .7 isn't supported but you can log in anyway. Gmail is still a beta so maybe this will start working in other browsers eventually. [alert admin]

"Check for updates automatically"...

Probably either because the update wasn't posted to the Software Update server. Lots of updates show up on VT or on the website for download before they get posted for SU to do it automatically. Or, it wasn't time for your Software Update to check yet. All checking the box in iTunes does is ask for it to be included when SU checks the server. When it checks is set in…

Could be Very Dangerous

People keeps saying this about APE and APE modules and I keep saying I don't know what they are talking about. Everything I have ever installed from Unsanity has never, ever caused me problems. Throughout OS revisions, on different machines, laptops, different processors, running all kinds of programs along side them, I have never ever had any problem that I could ever even remotely attribute to APE or an APE module.

WMA Convert???

Its not supposed to convert WMA files, its supposed to covert the audio track of DivX AVI files that have been encoded as WMAs instead of MP3 as is the standard.

Crashes

Maybe this snippit from the home page will help: About AVIs To work with AVIs you need the divx component and you may need the AC3Codec. In some cases extracting AC3 audio will result in an unexpected quit - we are looking into the cause of the problem. For now the workaround is: 1. Open the .avi in MacVCD X 4.2 or in Quicktime Pro 2. Edit->Select All 3. Edit->Copy 4. File->New 5. Edit->Paste 6. File->Save 7. Use the resulting .mov file in iVCD™ In some…

running as service

If you read the documentation, it tells you how to set up Rumpus to run at startup without being logged in. I believe there was some sort of problem with the way the builtin FTP worked with the OS that made this a hassle. That's also why it has to run as root. I have this and it will run just fine without being logged in. The author has gone a…
