Auction Hunter 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Very nice

I am a long time JBidWatcher user [and the developer is very assiduous at keeping up with ebay and user requests], as well as some other auction tools before that. I tried Auction Hunter for the first time today, and after playing with it for an hour, paid to register it. I have a couple of small auctions today on which to test the snipe capability. I understand the "arms race" in which ebay engages--unethically it seems to me--to break the sniping capabilities of third party software. I also understand the crybabies who claim that sniping is unfair. Oh well. Even if AH doesn't work any more reliably than JBW did, its Cocoa foundation and OS X-like presentation is so much more attractive. And that alone made it worthwhile. I plan to share some suggestions with the developers, mostly along the lines of including some JBW-like capabilities. Among other things, I would like narrower rows, so that I can see more of my auction data at one time without having to scroll. And within the "All" view, I would like some more clear designations of those items I am bidding n, those that are Hot, and those I have set to snipe. Also, twice today it has beach-balled on me, so I had to knock off a point on stability. And while I do not think the price is unfair, I think it is a tad high; if support remains good, it will be worth it. [alert admin]

Xtorrent 1.0 (45) (Mac OS X)

Potential not realized

I like the way Dave designs his stuff to be very "Mac-ified." But Xt keeps crashing [kinda defeats the whole purpose of being part of a torrent community], and Dave doesn't respond to user requests for assistance. So, for all his "anti-corporation" polemic, the reality is that supporting Dave is not good for the user. That's a shame, because Xtorrent has lots of potential to be the premiere Mac torrent client. Right now, it's just money into Dave's wallet with a poor and frustrating return to the user. [alert admin]

Flip4Mac Drive-in 1.0.0.32 (Mac OS X)

Seems to work as advertised

Actually, on two DVDs so far, it works flawlessly, and the images are playable in Front Row, which is pretty cool. But each image does take up 7gb, and while the quality is excellent, Handbrake creates playable images of 1/10 the size with an acceptable deterioration in quality for casual viewing. I'll keep trying this, because it seems well done, and it might be nice to use on the home system where it preserves all aspects of the DVD. [alert admin]

iPlanner 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Not so bad

Yeah, the demo worked fine for me, and it appears to be decent. I don't use either of the supported planners. Instead, I use a Levenger Circa system, which is letter size. So, I can use the LutherSoft full-size page template. That's cool. But inability to print weekly or monthly calendars is just killer for a $25 price tag. I don't mind that the demo prints un-useable pages; it proves it will work, though a time-delimited demo would be more effective, so I could actually use it. But single days only? C'mon LutherSoft, that's pretty narrow functionality. [alert admin]

Bookpedia 3.2.2 (Mac OS X)

Why separate apps for every media?

I am impressed with Bookpedia, but am disappointed that the developer has chosen to segregate library apps by media. I mean, does it really make sense to have a separate app for CDs, games and DVDs? I want my library to be integrated on the computer even if it is or isn't in real life. I am not complaining about the price of buying all 4 apps; I am complaining about the loss of functionality and inconvenience associated with separate apps. And no, it is not superior because it allows the user to only pay for what he or she wants. That's easily solved. Even Intelliscanner offers a front-end to its separate apps. But as near as I can tell, only Delicious Library truly integrates the multimedia approach. One thing I can do with DL that I cannot do with BP is to look at what titles are repesented in books, DVDs, videotapes and even games at the same time. Am I missing something that the *pedia apps offer here? [alert admin]

NNW Unread Menu 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Interesting

I would like a menu notification for NNW, but when installed on my MacBook pro, this does not behave quite as expected. Unlike the screen shot shown above, my list of feeds is grayed out. That's not that big of a deal, but it does mean I cannot use this utility to go directly to the feed I want to check out [and I think that should be one of its features]. Also, this utility does not respect groups in NNW, i.e., it does not behave the same way the NNW dock icon does, and that is what I was hoping for. Finally, it would be nice if there was some indication of which feeds have been updated. Still, it shows promise, and for now, I can tell when I have updated feeds without having to open NNW. e2Sync Tiger 2.8 (Mac OS X)

Increasingly Disappointing

I was an early and enthusiastic and paying supporter of this product. But as noted in a reply to my own review below, I have run into a problem with e2Sync. It repeatedly times out in syncing between Entourage & iSync. iSync works great for iCal and Address Book and my Nokia N70. This is clearly an e2Sync issue. I have filed bug reports [over two weeks ago] with the developer, including my email address and cell phone and have heard nothing. Indeed, when I filed a feature request/explanation early after buying the product, months ago, I never heard from them then, either. For now, I cannot recommend this product. To the developers: there is still "a hole in our lives." [alert admin]

QuickImageCM 2.4 (Mac OS X)

OK, I donated....

I agree. With all the positive feedback here on the entire line of software, this developer needs to be encouraged, and so I donated, even though I now use only Intel Macs, and must hope that Intel-compatible versions will be forthcoming soon. [alert admin]

OSXplanet 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Fantastic!

Title says it all. Just amazing. Three wishes only: (1) make it a screen saver; (2) allow alerts when a city on my list is coming into view; and (3) provide a "show me" option so that I can instantly see the screen without any of the impairments of the objects on my desktop. Maybe I can already do that and I just haven't figured it out. Either way.....amazing. Worth a donation. [alert admin]

URL Manager Pro 3.4.4 (Mac OS X)

Complicated? For whom?

I think mkupietz really misses the mark with the claim of complication. More complicated than simply bookmarking in Safari? Yes; show me a bookmark manager that is not. By definition, adding a layer of storage/searchability will add some extra steps. But it's nowhere near as bad as he makes out. I routinely add bookmarks to URLMP with a single keystroke combination, just like any of the decent BM managers. But I love URLMP. Even with its antiquated look, it still exceeds the other bookmark managers IMHO. I tried iURL and WebnoteHappy [which is pretty good, but is too tied to del.icio.us], and while each has something to commend it, they still do not match URLMP. The good news is that there is a new beta in the works, and it is pretty nice. Here is what I think it needs: 1. stable menu bar controller; this is one of its greatest advantages; with the menu controller, URLMP feels like it is part of every app rather than a separate app; I have never had a problem with it, but others seem to; 2. automated sync/backup with .Mac and del.icio.us and Amazon web storage and anything else people might want, but not just one service 3. Quicksilver integration [this would rock]; 4. newer interface like WebnoteHappy, or other Mail imitators, or even mimic Quicksilver. [alert admin]

Very nice

I continue to like AH very much, but I have noticed an increasing instability. Depending on how many apps I have running--it seems--AH will last as little as two or three minutes before it beach balls and then crashes. This instability is a serious issue because, while AH seems to snipe just fine, it cannot snipe if it has crashed. Therefore, I have been forced to monitor AH in order to ensure I get my…

Nice App....no support

My crashes seem to be linked to my 10.4.10 upgrade. Prior to that, it was doing fine. I have not previously had the problem of Dave not answering emails Am hopeful that there is a specific resolution for the crashing.

Deeply suspicious - think before you leap...

Man oh man, what a load. Nothing suspicious here at all. Sheesh, get a life and some dose of objectivity. You can't figure out how it works, so you instantly suspect foul play. Well, that's rational.

Overhyped

Perhaps you could provide some examples. I am just a DL user, and occasional "try something else out" kind of guy, but what is it that DL so misses out on with respect to how people work and what computers can do? I tried out the *pedia apps for example, and while I like things about them better, how convenient is it to have to open a different app for every single type of media?…

Botheration!

I sure have a difficult time agreeing that Apple has buggered this up. I miss the swinging part of the animation, too, though Coverflow still works fine as a stand-alone app. What I am hoping for is: 1. a full-scale iTunes visualizer based on Coverflow, which Apple can easily do; 2. A full-blown controller inside that visualizer; 3. A screen saver. Since you seem fond of complaining, I hope you shared your unhappiness with APple, rather than merely airing…

Sweet .....but

at this point, version 2.8 is timing out under OS X 10.4.7, with iSync 2.3 and Entourage 11.2.5. iSync is otherwise working fine with my Nokia N70, so there is some new failing with e2Sync. Have filed a bug report with the developers.

Use CoverFlow instead!

I could be wrong about this, but doesn't Coverflow work with a different set of images, caching them for its own use, and thus creating significant additional storage demands? I don't think it fills the gaps in your iTunes artwork, does it? I want something that fills the gap in my iTunes artwork semi-automagically. I was hopeful for CoverScout, but.......... Still, CoverFlow is not quite a complete alternative either.
