Expired

... all it does for me is display a message saying the Beta is expired. Looks like a dead project. [alert admin]

Intego NetBarrier X4 10.4.1 (Mac OS X)

sneaky update

The update to 10.4.x from 10.3 swaps your working copy of version 3 with version 4. But version 4 is a paid upgrade. So now you have lost version 3 for which you have paid for (the upgrade removes it without asking). The poster below details how you can contact support and get help in downgrading. What if I have a better use for my day? (like writing this comment) Why change the working program for a trial version in the first place?? And without mentioning it during installation?? The honest way is giving a warning. Is Intego running out of ways to "persuade" people to keep buying their product? [alert admin]

SpamSieve 2.4.2 (Mac OS X)

Spamsieve is plain great

Having bought this software over 2 years ago, I enjoy seemingly endless free updates. Needless to say it works terrific, with less than 2 in a thousand emails error margin. Since I don't pay for upgrades, the little I can do is recommend SpamSieve to everyone, by posts and word of mouth. Thank you, Michael Tsai [alert admin]

PhoneManager X 1.1.6 (Mac OS X)

highly recommend

I used this program for over two years and am happy with it. True, the interface would benefit from a face-lift but, on the other hand, all the updates issued since I registered have been free. Being that there is no competition (including, pathetically, no competition from Nokia) this choice is a no-brainer. Like the other reviewer points out, I will give up my 6310i when it disintegrates. Or I will buy a used one instead. It's simply the best phone, beats the living battery life and ruggedness out of any contemporary phone. [alert admin]

Skype 1.0.0.15 (Mac OS X)

Indeed, strange...

...the reviewer below points out a fragment of the agreement : article 4 "Permission to utilize Your computer". Now what might they use my "processor and bandwidth" for??? They mention the "limited purpose of communicating with other skype users" but isn't that a given?? I don't see a provision like that in - say - browser's agreements (although I obviously agree that Safari "utilizes my computer for the limited purpose of showing me internet pages"). Might it be that "communicating with other skype users" means "spamming them with ads" in the near future? I like skype but I think I need an explanation here. PS: If I would be paranoid (which I am not) I would ask if it is possible to listen to conversations in my house through skype. After all it is online most of the time while I'm doing other work. But then, we are not paranoid, or are we? [alert admin]

Project Magellan 1.0 (Mac OS X)

followup...

... to my post below. The developer has since contacted me. I got a serial and had hours of fun with the game. Of note though: the real cost of the game is $30. There is a 'shipping' fee that corresponds to handling your credit card aparently. this only appears during the checkout process. Other than that - great game. [alert admin]

Project Magellan 1.0 (Mac OS X)

am I an idiot?

I paid, no serial number emailed. The fee includes shipping so maybe I will get a CD? But how would I know that?? No response to my email inquiry to developer. No order confirmation. No info on shipping method or tracking number. Just my communications with paypal. Stay away until I say it's OK :-) [alert admin]

Avoid this rip off

The reply to the OT is not quite spot on. While Apple does release new operating systems, it doeas not stop supporting the previous versions. In fact it even releases bug fixes and other updates for previous versions of OSX. So the author of the post is right to complain about bad business practice.

sneaky update

by the way: I've been their customer for quite a while - expensive, seemingly arbitrary upgrade fees are a tradition. A pity, 'cause the product works well.
