RipIt 1.0 (Mac OS X)
RipIt Shoots Itself in the Foot with the Purchase Price... ![]()

I have been a longtime MacTheRipper user, but have tried all the other DVD ripping utilities (at least the ones that allowed a free trial) along the way. RipIt looked promising and I decided to give it a whirl also. Before I go on, please understand that my results were not scientifically controlled and I am just an average guy doing my own comparisons... MTR occasionally is unable to rip certain DVD's and I understand that this is (and will continue to be) a constant problem with any software of this nature and the ever changing technology of the Recording Industry. So, I took three DVD's that MTR was unable to completely rip and let RipIt take a shot. Out of "Cloverfield", "P2", and "Reservation Road", only "Cloverfield " was completed. The other two either locked up RipIt or caused it to quit before the first byte was crunched. The results were the same on a MacBook Pro and Mac Pro, running the latest version of Mac OS X 10.5. While I have not completely played through "Cloverfield", spot checking various chapters looks as though the job was well done. RipIt has a very clean interface and not allot of bells/whistles, so this appeals to the minimalist in me. Nonetheless, it's overall performance isn't much better than MTR; a program that I have been happy with for years. If both products were free or even if RipIt cost up to $5 more, I might recommend RipIt over MTR. However, the cost of $19 plummets it to the bottom of my consideration list. Entourage Email Archive X 3.0 (Mac OS X)
Customer Service with a Human Pulse... ![]()

Hello, I have been using e-mail archiving software from this developer for the past five years. It started out with Outlook Email Archive and is currently Entourage Email Archive X. Each update and upgrade just keeps getting better. All versions have consistently performed as advertised, making my personal and professional work flow so much easier. The few times that I did have a problem with this software, it was attributed to my own boneheaded ineptness. Any communication with the developer has been responded to quickly and he has truly provided customer service with a human pulse (which is a rarity in this business anymore). In the last support incident, he even provided me with a FREE customized AppleScript to address a problem I had! Such attention to detail and service alone makes me a loyal customer for years to come. “Technological change is like an axe in the hands of a pathological criminal.” (Albert Einstein, 1941), Dr. Z. DFG/1394-1 2.04.00 (Mac OS X)
I have been using this driver with Ben Software’s SecuritySpy and four Image Source DFG1394 units (coordinating four analog cameras) for over a year. It is rock solid in it’s dependability! But the most impressive detail that I have found, is the developer. He is very accommodating with questions or troubleshooting, quick to reply to messages, and open to feature requests. In this often impersonal and automated world, this feature alone is enough to win my support and hard earned money. [alert admin]

iTunes Dupes Barrier 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Hello, I have used Doug Adam’s Corral All Dupes in the past, because there was really nothing else that helped find iTunes duplicate music files. However, Corral All Dupes took 19 days, running 24/7, to complete the search of my 110 GB iTunes database on a PowerMac 1.8 GHz DP! iTunes Dupes Barrier completed the same job in 20 minutes. On top of it all, it is FREE! Brilliant work! “Technological change is like an axe in the hands of a pathological criminal.” (Albert Einstein, 1941), Dr. Z. [alert admin]

LOOPS Screensaver - Plasma 1.0 (Mac OS X)
I admit it. I originally left an unfavorable review of Plasma Screensaver earlier today and regret it... I was not pleased with the fact that the (now) previous version was limited in resolution on an Apple Cinema Display and there was no warning of this detail before purchasing. Within minutes of my asinine knee-jerk posting, the developer responded with a post stating that a text correction and software fix was in the works. He further contacted me directly and we exchanged some possible solutions. Before the end of that same day, a corrected version of the software was available to the public. There may still be a few tweaks that could be done, but for the mere price of $1.50 USD, it is well worth the time and money. I have erased my previous unfavorable review in lieu of this one. My hat is off to Andreas Pardeike for how he handle my initial comments and turned around a customer service issue that could have ended badly. My further condolences to him for the other negative comments that he has received. A five star rating to try and balance the score. Launch 'Em 4.0.1 (Palm OS)
Nobody Home at Installigent. Avoid Launch 'Em! ![]()

I agree with RichB... Synergy Solutions was great with customer service years ago (when I first bought Launch ‘Em), but since the take over by Installigent, they absolutely have become the best advertisement for their competitors. I have sent four e-mails over three weeks for upgrade purchasing information and not a one has been responded to. Any phone numbers that I had from older documentation have been disconnected.Hey, I was a returning customer who wanted to actually GIVE them money. No longer. Poor customer service and support for even the best software is enough to make me jump to another company. My rating is for one star, just to get my opinion logged. If I could, I would be rating Launch ‘Em with a negative five star score. [alert admin]

EarthBrowser 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Version 2.0 is Better, But Not Enough for Me... ![]()

I was given EarthBrowser 1.7 as a gift and have used it sporadically for awhile. Version 2.0 indeed has allot of potential, but not enough for me to purchase the upgrade. The biggest problem that I see is the CPU load, making the use of other programs at the same time difficult. It further lacks the map quality that I would prefer and the images in the closer resolutions appear slightly fuzzy to me. If a more realistic map/photo were available (more like what a real orbiting astronaut might see), I would most likely throw money at the developer. So, three stars for a valiant effort. I will keep my eyes open to see if EarthBrowser is refined and hope to become a future customer. [alert admin]

iTunes-LAME Encoder 2.0.5 (Mac OS X)
A Music Lover and iTunes Must Have! ![]()

After finally giving up on Audion and the MP3PRO format, I decided to make a complete switch to iTunes. Out of all the different music compression formats, I also chose LAME (with VBR) for my encoding and particular taste. Of course, iTunes doesn’t provide this...until now. The iTunes-LAME Encoder was exactly what I was looking for and it has done an excellent job! So far, I have ripped 700 plus CD’s (yes, all legally owned by me) with very few minor problems. Only four tracks out of around 10000 have failed to complete all of the tag information. This is a small price to pay, considering the actual encoding of those songs was still excellent. My hat is off to the developer! [alert admin]

Printer Setup Repair 4.0.2 (Mac OS X)
A Must Have Utility for Any Mac Tool Bag! ![]()

I encountered a problem with the “private” files while cloning my hard drive with Carbon Copy Cloner. What seemed fixable at the time and provided a successful transfer of my data, later manifested in printing problems. My troubleshooting efforts took up several hours and I was seriously considering a complete reinstallation of Mac OS 10.3.2, which I would have sold my soul to avoid. Then, a friend recommended Print Setup Repair. It located and repaired my damaged/lost files within minutes! I don’t believe that I have ever thrown money at a developer so fast in my life! Well worth the money and a utility that anyone who relies on their printer should have in their Mac tool bag.... [alert admin]

Intuit Quicken 2004 1.0 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
Still Poor Design and Customer Support... ![]()

Exact same Insights graph bugs as there have been for the last FOUR versions.... Trying to contact someone with a pulse at Intuit costs money and obviously does not assure that the technical information will reach anyone with even one brain cell left. Believe me, as I have tried multiple times. Other new features in this version are marginal at best and God help you if you heavily rely on the Portfolio features to forecast your financial future. Definitely not worth the retail price of $70. I only purchase from an eBay discount seller and then apply for the $20 upgrade refund, resulting in the total cost of about $20 after everything is said and done. Still way too much money for this software, when I would easily pay $200 for software that actually does what it promises AND has intelligent customer support. Like a bad marriage, I am sticking with Quicken 2004 because there is too much at stake to get a divorce. However, I am constantly looking for better options and will break the bond forever when the right one comes along! One star, just to get my opinion rated and is still too generous for this bit of mass consumer rip-off! [alert admin]

You can always count on attacks via the Internet when you post an even remotely negative review here, to the point of it being humorous. At least you slandered me with some creativity. Nice job! Hey, I took the time to state my limited qualifications, did a fair one-to-one comparison with another competing product, and even complemented RipIt on the design. That is what helps all of us make up our own minds about a product.…

Thanks for the link and dealing with the frustration for the rest of us! As far as your comment about Motorola and Timbuktu, I couldn't have summed up the two better! Just like my ex-wife; great product, poor service.

I couldn't agree more about the one-sided discount pricing... The upgrade features do not justify a $20 fee for me, not to mention that there is just an $8 price difference for new customers with their discount. This oozes of business greed and failure of appreciation to the long-standing customer. This is exactly how software companies price themselves out of business. “Technological change is like an axe in the hands of a pathological criminal.” (Albert Einstein, 1941), Dr.…
