XYplorer 5.20.0028 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

XYplorer seems to have been built with three things in mind: speed, power, and customizability, and it far exceeds your expectations in every part of the program. Its wealth of features are a power user's dream, and it comes with a Lifetime license. Pay for it once, and you're set. Whatever you're using to manage your files now, I promise you'll fall in love with XYplorer in a very short time. I love it! [alert admin]

WinRAR 3.50 beta 7 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)
Unmatched in quality and performance ![]()

Simply the best, most reliable archiver around. In the next version it will support 7z file creation. Most of my RAR files are 4.4G on DVD, and I've tested larger files for the heck of it with no problems. Like others, WinRAR offers so many options, and being a mature program and format, it's rock solid. There is very little difference between 7z Ultra vs. RAR Best, and when creating solid archives, RAR wins out every time. 1G game file was compressed to 501M using 7z Ultra (7-Zip) and took 5:55, whereas WinRAR Best compressed the same 1G file to 505M but only took 1:52 — less than two minutes, and less than a 1% difference in file size (on my 3.4GHz machine). Run your own tests. And in the next version, Roshal has plans to support 7z creation, thus continuing WinRAR's tradition of giving users the best of both worlds. [alert admin]

AutoHotKey 1.0.37.06 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

Powerful, flexible, and easy to use, AutoHotkey lets you get on with the task at hand rather than fiddle for days on end at creating scripts that work. That there is an entire user community built around the program keeps you from reinventing the wheel, along with gaining constructive feedback on anything you may be doing wrong. If you haven't discovered AutoHotkey, now is the time. And if you're curious to some of the more clever things one can do with AutoHotkey, check out Skrommel's scripts over at DonationCoder.com — http://www.donationcoders.com/skrommel/ He's one of many scripting gurus in the AutoHotkey forums. Pretty cool and all free. [alert admin]

I've been using FeedForAll, but the latest version of Feed Editor will surprise and delight you with its ease of use and efficient interface. Once you try it and see how easy its editing features make creating a feed is, you'll be sold. If you don't believe me, check out the HTML Editor within and you'll soon find how much time Feed Editor will save you. [alert admin]

HotKeyz 2.4.0.0 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)
Although I've moved on to AutoHotkey which does far more, HotKeyz is perhaps the best of the rest of the targeted hotkey apps. Good interface design, lots of flexibility included and options available to make sure your keys are accurate and unconflicted. It even does hotstrings and lets you print out a list of your hotkeys for reference. Brilliant! [alert admin]

TaskTracker 1.1.109 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)
TaskTracker is perhaps the ultimate time-saver on your computer, and will never let you misplace another file or wonder when you last worked on it. It provides an ingenius interface and a way to access and keep track of any file you've worked on throughout the day (or longer). One of the most useful utilities you will ever have, I promise. SyncBackSE 4.0 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)
Oddly, until this version of SyncBack SE, it did not offer some of the same features as a more direct program, such as DirSync. SyncBack SE will become SyncBack Pro by year's end and the price will double. However, if you start with this app, you won't be disappointed. Otherwise, DirSync is the most accurate synching program on the market. [alert admin]

PGP Desktop 9.0.1 (Windows NT, Windows XP, Windows 2000)
Read the PGP Support Forums for how bad the 9.x version truly is. Most customers are livid, and PGP offers only paid support. If you're thinking of buying this, think again, and then just get the MIT freeware version. It's just as good and significantly easier and faster to use. [alert admin]

Directory Opus 8.1.0.8 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)
While I prefer ExplorerPlus, Directory Opus can do ANYTHING and then some. Using Directory Opus's full feature set will save you from buying as many as 5-6 separate utilities. Not cheap, but worth it. [alert admin]

Nitro PDF Desktop 1.77 (Mac OS 9)
For a first version, this app is quite impressive and shows promise if they can continue to add features and usability improvements over the next two releases. One thing that is seriously annoying is that Nitro PDF does not have a distinct facing-pages view, only a continuous one. Also, it's zoom features are primitive. Still, this is a notch below Acrobat Standard 7.0, but does not begin to rival Acrobat Pro 7.0. [alert admin]

Nope, that actually redirects you to the trial version for 9.0, at http://www.pgp.com/downloads/desktoptrial.html I always get the freeware version from MIT at: http://web.mit.edu/network/pgp.html

I think they send you the URL to the free version right after you purchase the full version! I know there's a free version out and I've used it, but I'd love to know why PGP Corp. thinks they need to charge SO MUCH for the single desktop version. Capitalism at its worst.
