Mountain Tanks 1.6.3 (Mac OS X)

Good graphics, but very limited game play

Like another user said, this is only a turret battle, the tanks can't move which makes the game play quite boring. The observer has more freedom to move. Price much too high for such limitations. [alert admin]

Please, someone recompile this for Intel!!

Can someone take the source and make this work for Intel please? This developer has not released a new version since 2000... The only one that works with Intel I found is awefully slow... not at all like this one. [alert admin]

Apple iTunes 6.0.4 (Mac OS X)

Instability / crashing problems? Using OSS 3D plugin?

I have been cursing iTunes for well over a month, frustrated with constant crashing problems, usually when going to switch between items to play.. It would crash like every 3rd item I would play.. I was really getting ticked.. This was happening on both my G4 and G5.. I was beginning to think it was Apple's fault that somehow the updates for Intel were perhaps downing PPC reliability.. well, I was happily wrong.. Today I had a thought and removed the OSS 3D plug-in... and guess what? 100% rock solid reliability returned.. DO NOT INSTALL THAT PLUG-IN.. IT CAUSES STABILITY PROBLEMS!!!! (Removing it from your library/iTunes directory and a reboot will cure this!) IT's really sad because I really liked the 3d sound effects that plugin created, but screw instability... I'd rather have a flat EQ than crashing any day. Sorry Apple that I thought it was you for even a moment! [alert admin]

Microsoft Messenger 5.1.1 (Mac OS X)

Is Microsoft soo much worse than anyone else on this issue?

Give Microsoft a break on this one. I like bashing Microsoft too, but I don't think they are so behind the curve on features for the Mac version when you look at the equally or even more pathetic record of competing services. In fact I find them on par with every other pathetic Mac offering including AOL and Yahoo which both only provide a selective set of features compared to the Windows version.. Heck, iChat video never works with AOL video on XP even though they say it does (what's up with that Apple?), and Yahoo video has no sound between Macs or PCs, and MSN doesn't even bother or pretend to do video, so how is it any different or worse really? At least they're improving their product. Yahoo has unofficially ceased all Mac OS client software development (Their latest and greatest version is dated 2003!), so I definitely wouldn't try to hold Yahoo out as being better than MSN to "force friends" to Yahoo... Laserlight 2.0.0 (Mac OS X)

Doesn't work... Application locks and keeps relaunching System Prefs.

Can't try this application because it locks up on my G4 (forced to Force Quit it) and simply keeps relaunching System Preferences complaining about shortcuts not being enabled (but they are!).. I see this bug isn't new as it was in a previous comment. [alert admin]

Apple AirPort Extreme 5.7 (Mac OS X)

Airport Extremely stable. Thanks again Apple.

Mixed hybrid setup here with Airport Express for music and range boosting to two upstairs laptops, Airport Extreme base plugged into D-Link wired router/firewall to cable internet connection. This message was submitted over wireless from iMac G5 through Airport Extreme post update. No problems here. Full signal strength on all machines. [alert admin]

Apple AirPort Express 6.3 (Mac OS X)

Airport Express rocks.. always has.

Come on now. The only problem I experienced with music drop outs on my Express was playing from my old 233 MHz beige PowerMac G3. Because it couldn't maintain decoding AAC files while streaming and doing stuff in the Finder all at the same time. Not AEx's fault. Other Macs I've used with it, not a single dropout. Speed is excellent. Makes a great wireless base station replacement for the Airport Extreme even though Apple doesn't market as such. Just connect it to your cable or wired router, setup, and go. SmoothTunes 1.2 (Mac OS X)

The difference is slight.

I just had a chat with the author, let him know there is something wrong with the backup script. He figured out his server is misdirecting users because it lost power during a kernal upgrade and reverted to an old .htaccess file.. Anyways, long story short, we directed me to a beta download for Iridium's next version on a different popular server I can't name which has the additional stand-alone installer for iTunes (SmoothTunes) as well as the full install for the Iridium theme. I had just upgraded to iTunes 5, so I was anxious to see if it would work or not, and how well the theme looks.. Well, this time the installer worked fine, as the author said it would. How does it look? Well, it's not for me. It lightens the top control area above the song list considerably. While some may like it, I find that it is so much lighter than the EQ, that it makes the EQ look garishly dark (and there isn't much anyone can do about that I don't think) whereas before the background fill was much closer to matching the color of the bars. But that's just my take on it when I compared screenshots I took of both versions to figure out what bothered me about the SmoothTunes version.. But if you don't mind the EQ standing out a lot more, perhaps it's your cup of tea? I have to give the author props for being available and spending a couple minutes of time attentively on my bug report. Thanks much for supporting the Mac community! [alert admin]

Mail Stamps 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Pretty good!

I didn't even realize that the mail buttons had changed style until I saw this. I like this a lot better. The panther buttons may have been less "professional" looking, but I prefere the more Disney cartoon style of stamp buttons... They're cooler! (small side note to developer: The "customize tool bar" area is sorta messed up from this, it has Junk and delete twice in the top row.. was that unavaoidable to retain the stamp look? Also it seems that the junk functionality reverted to where the junk button can nolonger flag in the direction that junk is not junk, it must be done from within the message.. Did I miss something?) Apple Mac OS X 10.4.1 (Mac OS X)

It's GGGGrrrreeeeaatTT!

Initially had problems with Tiger not recognizing DVD player hardware on two systems. Turns out one has a hardware issue. The other was find after a clean install as opposed to an upgrade. I have to give it to Apple.. After clean installing all systems here with Tiger, there have been no stability issues at all, and everything seems to work as expected. Spotlight searches have given me much pleasure. It still needs a bit of improvement in the manner in which it presents files (and how sometimes overcomplex it is--too many steps--to go from a key word to bringing up the actual file in a Finder window as opposed to simply executing the file), but it is a definite step in the right direction. I predict that many refinements in the 10.4.x series of OS will remove any remaining gripes about Spotlight finess and widget issues. [alert admin]

For those of you suggesting alternatives...

If there is confusion between the two of these, it's Microsoft's fault for making similarly named software that do similar things.... It just points out the fact that Microsoft is a very confused company with poor product developement management and equally bad judgement in product differentiation. Most PC users can't even tell you the difference between Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger. This is Microsoft's fault for creating confusing product tiers that overlap…

Do a little research eh?

OH come on already, I thought Mac users were more resourceful than that!! The hacked version works perfectly across my room! Why don't you just put out the $49.95 and get yourself a completely PER PROGRAM CONFIGURABLE KeySpan Digital Remote... works absolutely fine with Front Row on older G5s, and G4s even.

Good, stable, light-weight

You have got to be kidding.. I have achieved speeds of >11Kb/sec per seed on Transmission. The speeds I get with the "official" Bit Torrent client are a tenth of that! NOT to mention how it even succeeds at making my G5 CRAWL and BEG for more speed when it's the only client besides Safari... Rediculously inefficient! I have yet to see Transmission corrupt any of my DVD downloads... you could…

10.4 Tiger

The file should automatically decompress into a folder (called something like eUSBxxx).. then you just run the installer, and then (IMPORTANT, it won't work if you don't do this), let the computer reboot or reboot it if the installer doesn't so the computer will recognize the new driver. Hooking up the Cameramate to a direct USB port (as opposed to a USB hub) may be required. You may have to hook it up…

Shutting Down RoadRunner Internet

YES! Cable modem has very low upload speed, a limitation enforced artificially by all the cable companies so people can't run servers on their systems (and therefore break their mutual non-competion pacts with the phone companies--shhh.. you aren't supposed to know that!) Your upload speed should never be maxed out because then your internet will (SEEM) like it is shut down / non-responsive. What's really happening is that Bit Torrent if unchained will burn all your…

KERNAL PANICS

Kernal Panics are almost always the result of either bad memory or an incompatible system extension or piece of add-on hardware...

STEPS TO RESOLVE KERNAL PANICS:

  • 1. Reinstall Tiger using the "ARCHIVE AND INSTALL" option. This ensures the installation is as clean as a fresh wiped drive, with no lingering files from Jaguar or Panther remaining intermingled. All previous system files are separated into an archive in its own very well identified folder so…

    The point is efficiency...

Application Monitor does too much sometimes for most people's needs. When all you want is a simple CPU monitor and not all the rest of that monitoring going on, who needs to waste all that processor time on monitoring? Application Monitor wastes up to >20% of my CPU on a G3. iCPU wasted less than 3% max... That's the point.
