Mozilla Firefox 3.1 beta 2 (Mac OS X)
Whoah! This release is bad news! I am glad that I thought to backup my "Firefox" folder in the "Applications Support" folder before using this. This beta 2 release completely wiped out my bookmarks so that nothing was appearing in the bookmarks folders in my bookmarks toolbar. When I clicked on the "Organize Bookmarks" option to see what was going on, all of my bookmarks were gone! I tried this twice replacing my "Firefox" folder in the Applications Support folder, and got the very same results. The bookmarks were just zapped out of existence. It is back to 3.0.4 for me. MacWise 11.46 (Mac OS X)
Like a number of other terminal emulators I have examined recently, MacWise seems to be a very nice program for what it does; however, while it does support ANSI colors, it does not support the extended ASCII character set, i.e., ANSI characters, such as are used on PC-ANSI based BBSes. If you don't understand what I am talking about, just use MacWise and go to an IP address like this one, using port 23: 202.128.20.175. As you will see, the ANSI characters are not displayed properly. Now, use SyncTERM, (available here on VT), and see what happens. Surprise! That is the way it is supposed to look! Thus, for the time being, SnycTERM still remains the king when it comes to old time BBSing. Thanks Deuce! :) [alert admin]

In my search for terminal emulators & telnet clients that properly display BBS ANSI graphics, I was delighted to discover that along with SyncTERM, this program also supports ANSI graphics...if you choose the right font in its preferences. I found the "Smoothansi 6x15" font to be the best for this purpose. Furthermore, you can use the mouse's scroll wheel to scroll up and down screens without having to hit any other modifier keys first. I was also surprised to discover that web links in on-screen BBS text documents are treated as live links and will actually launch your web browser and take you to the page. As others here have already stated, GLterm is also very fast. I hit a BBS command and didn't even realize that a window had already refreshed itself. Now for the negative. Unless I am mistaken, this program does NOT support file transfers over TCP/IP. If it does, I certainly couldn't figure out how to do it. In fact, while trying to get Xfers to work, I got a kernel panic a few times, and even crashed my entire computer a few times. If file transfers worked, I would switch from SyncTERM to this program in a flash. That is how much I like it. The other negative seems to be that nothing under the "Control" menu appears to work...at least I was unable to get them to work. I really wish that the developer would take a renewed interest in this project, as even in its current state, I was impressed. Are you listening buddy? :) [alert admin]

SyncTERM 0.9.2 (Mac OS X)
Just a quick note. Until Stephen releases the next, official, non-crashing version of SyncTERM, I have changed and simplified the download URL for the good copy that I am making available on our server. From now on, just use this: http://www.endtimeprophecy.org/Files/SyncTERM.sit If you have any problems, please email me. Thanks! [alert admin]

Wonderfully Displays ANSI Graphics ![]()

It's great to see that Stephen has finally made SyncTERM available on VersionTracker. I have used his program for a number of months now, and more recently have been assisting him in working out some of the problems on the Macintosh platform. While SyncTERM may lack the smooth, polished Macintosh interface that we have all come to know and love, it is superior to other Macintosh telnet clients when it comes to properly displaying the ANSI graphics commonly used on BBSes. BTW, if anyone encounters a problem with the application crashing upon launch, I have temporarily made available another copy which does not have this problem. I think Stephen may have included the wrong installer package when he put together the .dmg image yesterday. In addition, I have included some helpful Read Me files in the package for those of you who may be unfamiliar with SyncTERM. It is very reminiscent of old BBS software, so it may seem foreign to you at first, particularly if you were never a BBSer back in the 80's and 90's. You can download my temporary package at: http://www.endtimeprophecy.org/Files/SyncTERM_092.sit It is compressed with an older version of Stuffit Lite for those of you who may have older systems on your Macs. Enjoy! [alert admin]

FreeShare Server 1.0.0 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
WunderWerkz Software Dev. Note
To All Users: Be advised that as of March 28, 2007, due to creative differences, and other irreconcilable issues, we decided that it was in our best interest to terminate our affiliation with the French programmer known as "GLoarb!!", and to continue to develop our own flavor of the client and server software under a new name. Also be advised, that even though our splashscreen is currently being used with the current version of "GLoarbLine", and even though our product blurb for GLoarbLine continues to remain on the lorbac.net site in the news section, said programmer has removed our name from the splashscreen, and has credited himself with having written the product blurb, when he did no such thing. We wrote every word of it, just as we also created the GLoarbLine splashscreen. In contrast, in the Read Me for our new client and server software suite, we credit GLoarb!! as one of the architects of the modified "Openline" open source code, which now forms the basis for our new software product. Draw your own conclusions. [alert admin]

BTW sascha_77, we just noticed that you hadn't even tried the software. That doesn't give your comments very much validity.

Please note that while many people in the rich, industrialized West are happily buzzing along with their expensive G4's, G5's and Mac Intels, there are still a considerable number of people around the world who cannot afford the luxury of possessing such modern machines. Many of these people still work on older Mac models which only support earlier versions of OSX, or only OS 7 through OS 9. For these people, the FreeShare Client and…
