PDF Browser Plugin 2.3.2 (Mac OS X)
Note the developer's version statement. This will fail to display PDFs within Safari if you're running 10.6. Presumably Manfred Schubert will update the plugin for 10.6 soon. [alert admin]

VueScan 8.5.08 (Mac OS X)
For my purposes, stunningly better than alternatives ![]()

I just discovered that Vuescan now supports my all-in-one HP C7280, purchased mostly to scan from a feeder tray handwritten (pencil!) notes and solution sets written over many years. I *had* been using the HP software (which would dump to a bunch of low-contrast jpegs), then post-processing using ImageMagick command-line tools. Vuescan makes the workflow incredibly faster--rapidly scanning a batch of pages into a single, high-quality, remarkably compact PDF file, precisely what I want to accomplish. It also permits, as it always has, saving a custom set of settings into a convenient initialization file, so that I never again have to set by hand multiple parameters, as I did with the HP software. As others have said, it has been very good for a very long time, and keeps getting better. [alert admin]

Webmin 1.470 (Mac OS X)
As far as I can tell from a slight investment of time, webmin requires OS X server; the ordinary Leopard release for home Macs won't work. You can follow the instructions in the README and it installs, but attempts to access the control Web page hang. The instructions in the webmin Wiki at http://www.webmin.com/osx.html appear very out of date. [alert admin]

Apple Security Update 2007-009 (Mac OS X)
My Cube's HP PhotoSmart 7200 series all-in-one became erratic today, and after reinstalling the HP software (HP_Installer_PS7200_v9.0.dmg) an attempt to re-add the printer fails with a CUPS error: server-error-service-unavailable No printer.conf file is produced, and attempts to launch cupsd by hand fail with a dyld: Symbol not found: _cupsFileRead Referenced from: /usr/sbin/cupsd Expected in: /usr/lib/libcups.2.dylib The latest HP software (HP_Installer_PS7C7200_v9.7beta.dmg) won't even complete installation, with lots of lpstat crashes, presumably due to more errors in the CUPS library: dyld: Symbol not found: __cupsSetLocale Referenced from: /usr/bin/lpstat Expected in: /usr/lib/libcups.2.dylib Sounds like the Security Update is a big step back for me since I can no longer print (though the scanning works). Damn! [alert admin]

img2icns 0.5.1 (Mac OS X)
Attempting to uncompress img2icns.dmg.bz2 gives the message bunzip2: img2icns.dmg.bz2: trailing garbage after EOF ignored Moreover, attempting to open the .dmg file gives the warning: no mountable file systems. Nor is the file actually gzip. [alert admin]

Adobe Illustrator CS3 13.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Update fails with `update cannot be applied'... checksum failure?
"Update cannot be applied.to the product. Please re-install the product and try again." I tried re-downloading the update twice and suspect that Illustrator CS3 has become spontaneously corrupted. Gee, sure would be nice if the software updates for Adobe's paying customers went as smoothly as those for Reader... Sigh. Guess I'll just wait a few days and see if things settle down. I remember this same process for CS2, dammit, and had to reinstall 2 or 3 times. I'm somewhat surprised that so much activity occurs in ~/Library/Caches/ ... Moreover, my ~/Library/Logs/Adobe/SoftwareUpdates/AdobeSoftwareUpdate.log reports a bum checksum 2007-06-21 21:34:45.324 PatcherApplication[2015] CheckSum verification fail for file /Volumes/Local/Applications/Adobe Illustrator CS3/Plug-ins.localized/Extensions.localized/FlattenS.aip/Contents/MacOS/FlattenS 2007-06-21 21:34:45.324 PatcherApplication[2015] File Checksum "5e018ec9e3331eabedfd6cb2aa0208af", checksum from manifest "ebb5789534eadd309b5e158764962e4e". 2007-06-21 21:34:45.324 PatcherApplication[2015] Failed to perform "patch" file Operation 2007-06-21 21:34:45.324 PatcherApplication[2015] ----------------------------------------------------------------- 2007-06-21 21:34:45.330 PatcherApplication[2015] Long task finished 2007-06-21 21:34:45.330 PatcherApplication[2015] There's nothing to rollback. 2007-06-21 21:34:45.330 PatcherApplication[2015] Restarting the services... 2007-06-21 21:34:45.330 PatcherApplication[2015] =============== RESTARTING THE REQUIRED SERVICES =============== 2007-06-21 21:34:45.330 PatcherApplication[2015] Done 2007-06-21 21:34:45.331 PatcherApplication[2015] ...................... Microsoft IntelliPoint & IntelliType 6.2.1 (Mac OS X)
Diagnosing panics after post-installation reboot
The last two updates have each produced a kernel panic after the (forced) reboot. Tiger Cache Cleaner readily diagnosed the reason: the installer program apparently fails to DELETE the old Microsoft Mouse System Preference pane (TCC complains about a duplicate Pref Pane). A safe reboot (hold down the shift key upon reboot) will permit you to delete one or the other. Before deleting one or the other, you can check the version info by cliicking on the arrow icon in the upper right of the Microsoft Mouse panel, next to the Microsoft IntelliPoint phrase. I don't have a Microsoft keyboard, so don't know what happens in this case. Is this Microsoft's first post-Windows Safari gift to Mac owners? :) [alert admin]

Tint 1.2.4 (Mac OS X)
Launched the app, loaded an image, then noticed CPU usage. Here's a paste from a 'top' output (with a dual-1.7 GHz CPU Cube): 2618 Norrkross 186.9% 0:56.68 3 91 239 37.3M 17.4M 44.8M 148M Those are some serious cycles given I wasn't actually DOING anything with the image. On the other hand, it evidently is multi-processor aware :) [alert admin]

I've found that EasyFind routinely expands the number of swapfiles due, presumably, to very poor memory management. Benchmark: I looked for all occurrences of files or folders with a certain string in them: Find Any File: displayed all files and stopped looking after 15 seconds EasyFind: Found 1 file after 45 seconds, a large batch more after 48 seconds, and finished after 70 seconds. Yes, EasyFind is more flexible (e.g, can search for strings WITHIN files), but I…

ALSO works over wireless home network
A follow-up: Vuescan (the Professional version) 'just worked' on my (Ethernet) networked HP C7280. The scanner is NOT directly attached to my Mac, but rather to a router. Moreover, Vuescan on a laptop also immediately detected the networked scanner over a wireless connection. In both cases the scanner appears as "HP Net Scanner". So I'm somewhat mystified about MacInTalk Pro's difficulties.

I have a PhotoSmart C7280 all-in-one. I updated the software that came with the unit via: HP_Installer_PSC7200_v9.7beta.dmg = name of OLD beta 9.7, 217.84 MB, dated 11/2007 HP_Installer_PS2600_v9.7.dmg = name of NEW download, about 190 MB. I suspect today's new download is NOT a generic installer and suspect it simply supports the PhotoSmart 2600 series?? This download appears if you follow links, for example, for a Photosmart 2613 All-in-One.

Mea culpa--I had installed (non-10.4 compatible) CUPS 1.3.0 months ago: it is scarcely surprising that something CUPS-related broke at the security update. Lesson: once you deviates from official Apple releases, the onus is on your to maintain what you've changed. For those in the same boat: the recent 1.3.5 recent release of CUPS DOES builds and installs easily and works fine with the Security Update--and either of the HP software releases plays well…
