Counteragent 1.5 (Mac OS X)

Cure for the common Windows

Millions of messages after installation, this has stopped tens of thousands of viruses. It runs exceptionally well on almost any machine, has an interface that all plug-in writers should learn from and costs practically nothing. Best money I have ever put into the mail servers here. [alert admin]

iCafeSystem 2.5 (Mac OS X)

Not sure about this... quite yet

The screenshots sure make it look unpolished. It should be simple and easy to understand for anyone. The dialog boxes for even logging in are confusing and ambiguous. The web browser, albeit meant to be simple looks crude and thrown together. There is very little adhering to the ui standards of the Mac OS. Yes, it uses brushed metal interface, but that is about where the standards use end. This product has a ton of potential, but needs to be looked at by a gui designer to make all of that hard work in the back-end of the program look as good to the end user as it might to the programmers. A good example of this is the text, send cash string to server when a user logs out. What does that tell the end user? Very little. Instead, something like I am done and would like to check out, or simply "log out". But the latter is even too technical sounding. Also, why is there a menu that shows applications like something out of a registry? What is www2? Unless the end user knows the system, it just gets confusing. You may want to look at the other log in systems out there for some cues. Even the Mac OS X login screen would be a great reference for this. Simple, straightforward, and clean looking. Another good example is the Kinkos login system at their stores.

I know all of this seems harsh, but it is because I really believe that the program has a lot of promise.

HansaWorld 4.3 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

No way to see what they do

All they do is hype their product on their website, but show no examples of it, no screenshots, etc. Judging by the way the program is sold, I would say that it is one of those if you have to ask, then you cannot afford it. Not a big deal, if you could actually see what you are interested in purchasing. Show some examples of this thing before yo expect big sales. [alert admin]

Toast Titanium 5.2.1 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

I hate to rag on companies, but

I just had an experience on the phone with Roxio I could have done without. Simple questions on DL support. Unless the question was whether it supported Dual-Layer, the answer is I have to call a Technician after purchasing the product. I am going to purchase a ten pack for a school and you cannot even answer a few basic questions? I always try to stand up for companies and individuals making cool stuff, but this company likens itself to Quark. Buy and find out if it works is their theory. Ever since Roxio bought Napster, support for the Mac is completely gone. Well, so is a ten pack sale. I bet if my question was for Easy CD Creator, they would have been all over me with support. Besides, it looks like the only way to get dual layer support, even though it claims to support it is to buy it with Jam. Dang it, why can't there be a simple solution to burning DVDs? [alert admin]

Sawmill 7.0b16 (Mac OS X)

Works, but look and feel missing

I guess maybe I am just too picky, but I was hoping through all of these versions, the look and feel would have gone to a much higher level. Nicer looking graphs and charts would be so nice at this point. [alert admin]

Mayhem 1.0 (Mac OS X)

People, it is even labeled as a prank.

If you install it, you bear the full brunt of what happens. Blindly installing apps is a no-no in any realm. [alert admin]

Symantec Norton Utilities 8.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Speed frustrations

I still have yet to figure out why it takes forever to load Norton off CD. I understand that CDs are much slower, but it sounds like the dang drive is doing a butterfly seek test while it loads. I went in an looked at the cd in Speed disk and notice that it is hardly optimized. What does it say when the program that is supposed to optimize one's drive is not optimized. I fully appreciate all Norton Utilities gives us, but it just seems that the higher the version, the slower things get. Almost ten minutes to load off the CD is ridiculous, even if they do say it will take up to that to load. Why, when other bootable programs run circles around it? I will still purchase Norton, but am getting rather frustrated with it. [alert admin]

Eudora 6.1b2 (Mac OS X)

So near, yet so far.

Yet again, we see new features, but the same features everyone asks for are still missing. Is Qualcomm going to ever have a mail program that actually can support html like almost every other e-mail client on the planet? Forgive the rant, but we have been asking for this for years now. Why is it so hard to add correct table support and basic html rendering abilities that all of its competition have?

You have the greatest e-mail client out there, but it is missing such a core component of functionality that most businesses rely upon. Why not fix that before adding features that are just extras? This is the only reason you lost two of my largest clients.

Worth it? Absolutely

You are wrong. the full version and the demo are NOT just a screensaver. It is a full-fledged application that allows multiple views, more satellite options, etc. It is wonderful and well worth the measly $30. We use it for training purposes and the local school uses it for the same. If you really want to light up kids' eyes, put the images up using a couple projectors. I am lucky and have a pair…

Check to see if you have Journaling enabled for that drive. I have seen that glitch rear its head before in earlier installs. -jason

no html email

Corporations including many of my clients need to be able to send e-mail with far more capabilities than just simple text. I don't like html any more than any of you do, but it is a necessity. When almost every other client supports html, Eudora makes me look really, really bad when I recommend it to Fortune 500 clients.

I like Eudora for its power, but if it cannot render html, they consider it…
