Get Lyrical 3.3 (Mac OS X)
The new icon is marginally better and the old one was definitely in need of an upgrade. But what both the old and new Get Lyrical icons illustrate is that software design is often a world away from graphic design. It should be no surprise, though, that writing freeware won't pay for the help of an icon artist. [alert admin]

Data Rescue 3.0.1 (Mac OS X)
I guess Prosoft hasn't noticed there's a recession on. I, for one, cannot afford to upgrade from Data Rescue II for $65. While this is a decent discount from the retail price of $99, in my book, in these times, they are both overpriced. [alert admin]

Cacidi Extreme CS4 (Mac OS X)
You've got to be kidding, right?
How is a product priced at $4,900.00 shareware? If that's not "commercial" than nothing is. [alert admin]

SpamSieve 2.7.7 (Mac OS X)
SpamSeive 2.7.7 works with OS X 10.6.1, but not with the latest (beta) versions of Eudora 8 and Thunderbird. I had to downgrade Thunderbird to start the trial period on SpamSeive. As it turned out, that wasn't difficult. But it was a nuisance. [alert admin]

ToolBar Extras 4.3 (Mac OS X)
There are some useful tools in this package, but I would install only three or four of them. Therefore, I can't see paying for all of them, when most would just gather dust, metaphorically speaking. If they were available for $1 each, say, or in customizable packages of five for $5, it would be a more appealing product. Whether it would be worth the effort for the developer to sell them this way is another question. But it would be more user friendly. No one likes paying for stuff they don't want or don't need. Adobe Acrobat 9.2 (Mac OS X)
I had to reinstall Adobe Acrobat CS4 and then run all the previous updates to get this one to work. I think the problem was that I removed foreign language support from the programs in my Applications folder to save some space. This time around I didn't apply the language kit update to Acrobat. Hopefully this approach will avoid the problem in the future. [alert admin]

Adobe Acrobat 9.2 (Mac OS X)
This update won't install for me because some undisclosed plug-in(s) are missing. The only alternative? Reinstall Acrobat. Humbug! [alert admin]

iGlasses 2.1.3 (Mac OS X)
The MacFixIt blurb claims Snow Leopard compatibility, but since iGalsses is not, in fact, 64 bit compatible, this is a bogus claim. Who wants to run their 64 bit apps in 32 bit mode? Not many I should think. Else why upgrade to Snow Leopard in the first place? Until iGlasses is 64 bit capable, use it at your own risk. Of course, it will still work in earlier versions of the Mac OS. But by muddying the issue of OS X 10.6 compatibility, eCamm does a disservice to their users and to their product, effectively undermining their own credibility. We can only hope most other developers will choose not to follow their poor example. [alert admin]

Data Rescue 3.0 (Mac OS X)
Version 2 supports Snow Leopard
While there are some nice new features in version 3, I can't see paying the steep upgrade price at this time, given that version 2.2.1 works with Snow Leopard. On the one hand, the program still needs a 32 bit version for backwards compatibility; on the other, a 64 bit version for OS X 10.6 would provide significant performance improvements. That might justify the upgrade cost; until Drive Genius is 64 bit, however, I'll make due with version 2.2.1. [alert admin]

Eudora 8.0.0b7 (Mac OS X)
There is a poorly iconed pull-down menu above the scroll arrow at the upper right of the message list pane. In this menu are two occurrences of the item "Who." The top one enables Recipients; the bottom one enables Senders (I have only the bottom one checked). This feature is by no means clear - I worked it out through trial and error. The first trick is to find the blasted pull-down menu. The Recipients/Senders feature is a Penelope add-on item. It's not present in the Thuderbird or even Eudora without Penelope. By the way, I've found that Penelope has serious problems in OS X 10.6.1. With a message selected in the message pane, any keyboard input moves one or another message to the trash. If you have the trash in the message window, keyboard input will delete a selected message entirely. As a result, I have had to disable Penelope in Eudora, which rather defeats the purpose of using the Eudora version of Thunderbird. I have not reported this issue because filing bug reports for Eudora remains, as it has been for a very long time, incredibly tedious. As always with Eudora, you just have to hope they will find and fix the bug eventually - I call that the Eudora tax. Even though the program is now free, that tax remains. The developers continue to hide behind a screen of open source gobbledegook. Given that they make user feedback so difficult, I wonder why they even bother with the Eudora/Penelope project. Given the long intervals between updates, they clearly don't bother very much. [alert admin]

The Version Tracker information has not been updated - as is often the case - to reflect the current state of affairs. According to the review this week on Macworld, Cameras is now free, perhaps because some of its features, at least, are rumored to be implemented in Snow Leopard. I'm not sure why that would move the developer to cut the price - Snow Leopard won't be out for some months yet and it…

Disables cmd-tab application switching
I didn't try version 2.4, but version 3 does not affect the Application Switcher on my Mac Pro with OS X 10.5.6. It works as advertised.

Take a look in the Activity Monitor. Look for a process named like PTHVolume and quit it. You should then be able to empty the trash. Also check Startup Items in the Accounts system preference to make sure that PTHVolume isn't listed there. If it is, delete it. Next time you start up your computer it should be gone.

The TechTool Pro 4.1.2 update worked fine on my dual 1GHz G4 in OS X 10.4.6. And TechTool launches and runs properly after the update. somers96, your problem with your password is probably a coincidence with rather than caused by the TechTool update. You can set/reset your computer's password by booting from your OS X install CD or DVD. The option will be listed in one of the menus (which one depends on which version of…

Actually, J!mmy Inconceivable, you’re quite in error yourself about where the Camera Raw plug-in goes in Photoshop CS2. Because it’s now used by Bridge, which is a standalone application in CS2, the Camera Raw plug-in goes in Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CS2/File Formats. In order to install the update properly I had to do a search of my hard drive to find it precisely because it was not in the same place in CS2 as it was in…

TypeIt4Me is very good. I used it in OS 9 (and before). And I used it in OS X while I was waiting for Spell Catcher to be upgraded (it's not too expensive so I don't regret paying for it, even though I no longer use it). The shortcuts feature in Spell Catcher is comparable to TypeIt4Me, but SC offers many other features in addition to shortcut expansion. Of course, many programs have their own…
