TechTool Pro 4.6.2 (Mac OS X)
It's understandable that Micromat charges for these updates. They put a lot of work into making their DVD compatible with the constant changes in Mac hardware and the operating system. If you want to avoid the cost of replacing the TTP disk, however, the easiest and most efficient way is to install the update on an external hard drive with whatever system version you currently use. The external drive will boot faster and work more reliably than the DVD and will cost little more than the $99 Micromat wants for an annual upgrade subscription. What's more, you can also install any other utilities you rely on, like DiskWarrior. [alert admin]

SoundSource 2.0 (Mac OS X)
I Agree, Rogue Amoeba Software deserves kudos for creating and continuing to support and improve SoundSource. It's one of the most useful, and used, items in my menu bar. The addition of audio sliders is a great idea. I have a set of computer speakers plugged into the audio-out port on my Mac Pro and I use a PowerWaive USB audio device (no longer available, unfortunately) from Griffin Technologies to connect a set of Bose Headphones (to translate the USB digital audio signal to analogue for the headphones). This means I don't have to reach down and fumble for the headphone port on the front of my Mac Pro - which sits on the floor beneath my desk. Sometimes the PowerWaive will stop working; this is a nuisance, but having SoundSource in the menu bar makes it easy to find the problem (usually unplugging and re-connecting the USB cable will enable the computer to see the PW again). Thank you Rogue Amoeba for this little gem (they make other good stuff as well). [alert admin]

RadioRocker 1.2.1 (Mac OS X)
The program is a good idea, but, at this point, the implementation leaves much to be desired. Whether the problems are part of the program itself or a result of the technology it taps into is open to debate. Some of the stations I tried to access were unavailable - perhaps their streaming broadcast was not active. Others started and stopped at the same point, as if the stream is restricted somehow. When I did connect, the audio quality was good, but, of course, this also depends on the quality of the audio stream. Many of these issues may be outside the control of the developer of RadioRocker. Yet they diminish its value substantially. Steaming radio would be a great alternative to over-the-air broadcasting - if it was more reliable and easier to use. RR is obviously an effort to address these issues, but it has not yet resolved them. Something that should be in the developer's control is the ability to sort stations by genre and even location (city) within a state. This ability depends, of course, on the structure of the database as well as UI design. [alert admin]

Rulers 2.1 (Mac OS X)
Indeed, this is one of those "why didn't they think of it sooner" kind of applications. Instead of moving an on-screen ruler to try to measure a space onscreen, you can pull out guides just as you do in a graphics or layout program, which makes alignment much easier. [alert admin]

Microsoft Office 2004 11.4.2 (Mac OS X)
Microsoft is hardly the only company with occasional update problems. Adobe comes to mind, as, for that matter, does Apple. But every time there's an update to Office there are complaints from people who don't even use the product. For the most part, Office apps on the Mac have been quite good, at least in OS X. In fact, Microsoft was the first major developer to bring their products to OS X back when it was aborning. This contributed in no small measure to OS X's, and Apple's, success. Admittedly a combo update would be nice. I've now got eight Office '04 updates in my archives, meaning a reinstall is incredibly tedious. On the other hand, I'm grateful Microsoft is still supporting Office '04. Thank God for small favors, as they say. As for why this update is listed only for PPC, well, doh! Office '04 is a PPC app. Nevertheless, it runs just fine in Rosetta on Intel Macs. Just as do most pre-Intel versions of Adobe apps. That's what Rosetta is for, after all. End of rant. ;-) [alert admin]

Microsoft Office 2008 12.1.0 (Mac OS X)
Just to balance things a little, this update worked fine for me. Word does, indeed, launch faster - the second time around. The slow initial launch may have to do with the number of fonts on my system, which has always slowed Word down a bit, but that's not Microsoft's fault. [alert admin]

PithHelmet 2.8.3 (Mac OS X)
Likewise, I'm glad PithHelmet finally made it back. Keeping up with Safari updates has been difficult as they have been so frequent lately. These days I wait to apply Safari updates until Saft is up-to-date, which usually takes a few days. PithHelmet has been longer in coming, and, in fact, has skipped a few Safari versions, but I'm happy the developer is still working on it. Certainly it's a challenge. [alert admin]

ToMacs 1.6 (Mac OS X)
Now that the linked website and the help file are in English, ToMacs is easy to use. Sorry for the negative reviews, but it's the squeaky wheel that gets the grease. [alert admin]

ToMacs 1.5.6 (Mac OS X)
I hate to be a cultural imperialist, but English is the lingua franca for most of the world. With instructions - at least that's what I assume I'm looking at on the developer's web site - only in French, the potential of this little app is severely constrained. Since ToMacs does not automatically recognize networked volumes or PCs, something must need to be adjusted to make it work. Because the author cannot tell us what that is in a language most of us can understand, his app is useless to a great many potential users. Because he apparently cannot even read these critiques on Version Tracker, he may not even know (assuming he would care if he did know) that he is excluding so many people. This seems odd in that he went to the trouble of having the application's interface translated to English. [alert admin]

Application Enhancer 2.5b1 (Mac OS X)
If you don't like or need the Unsanity haxies, don't use them. Couldn't be simpler. But one person's bad experience doesn't invalidate all the good experiences so many others of us have had over the years. APE, FruitMenu and WindowShade now work in OS X 10.5.2 on my Mac Pro. For the fellow with problems, clearly he has issues most of us have not encountered. But since APE is easy to remove, it is highly improbable that it will do any permanent damage to your system. So it's simple to test for compatibility - no risk involved. From time to time other applications or utilities will conflict with Application Enhancer. It they do, it's easy to exclude them in the APE pref pane. Any good hack will give you that option. Most such conflicts have been resolved over the years by Unsanity in cooperation with other developers. Unsanity has an excellent track record in this regard, a fact the haxie haters generally ignore. In my opinion, that's their loss and no skin off my nose. [alert admin]

Take a look in the Activity Monitor. Look for a process named like PTHVolume and quit it. You should then be able to empty the trash. Also check Startup Items in the Accounts system preference to make sure that PTHVolume isn't listed there. If it is, delete it. Next time you start up your computer it should be gone.

The TechTool Pro 4.1.2 update worked fine on my dual 1GHz G4 in OS X 10.4.6. And TechTool launches and runs properly after the update. somers96, your problem with your password is probably a coincidence with rather than caused by the TechTool update. You can set/reset your computer's password by booting from your OS X install CD or DVD. The option will be listed in one of the menus (which one depends on which version of…

Actually, J!mmy Inconceivable, you’re quite in error yourself about where the Camera Raw plug-in goes in Photoshop CS2. Because it’s now used by Bridge, which is a standalone application in CS2, the Camera Raw plug-in goes in Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CS2/File Formats. In order to install the update properly I had to do a search of my hard drive to find it precisely because it was not in the same place in CS2 as it was in…

TypeIt4Me is very good. I used it in OS 9 (and before). And I used it in OS X while I was waiting for Spell Catcher to be upgraded (it's not too expensive so I don't regret paying for it, even though I no longer use it). The shortcuts feature in Spell Catcher is comparable to TypeIt4Me, but SC offers many other features in addition to shortcut expansion. Of course, many programs have their own…

Rayandrews1: If you don't like downloading the frequent TexEdit updates then simplify your life and avoid the beta versions. Wait for the full release updates. Even then, if you're not having a problem using TexEdit, you can ignore a few of those as well till there's something in one that you need. No one is forcing you to hit the Download button. Blaming the developer for conscientiously supporting his product is asinine. In case you…

The manual installation procedure may not be hard but the author neglected to include it in the documentation. I had to come back to Version Tracker and real the reviews to find it. This application has the limitations of most Java apps I've seen - for average users it's more trouble than it's worth, even when it's free. However platform independent it may be, without an easily accessible interface Java apps fail the minimum usability…
