Speed Download 5.0.1 (Mac OS X)

The Best D/L Manager for the Mac!

I've been using SD since version 2.x and have tried most of the other managers available for OS X. For speed, reliability, and website compatibility I haven't found an equal. There have been very few critical bugs in ALL the versions since I first used SD and those few were promptly addressed by the developer usually before I was even affected. For those who have had problems with customer support I have three suggestions: 1. Check your SPAM filter. 2. Make sure you know how to correctly spell your own e-mail address. and 3. Provide detailed descriptions of your issues other than the highly informative terms such as "rip-off", "junk", "doesn't work", or the ever famous "sucks" Disclaimer/Rant: I am not associated with Yazsoft in any way except as a customer. I have been working on computers since 1979 (before many of you were born) and have been on the internet since/when it was called ARPAnet. I've seen the scams, fly-by-night "deals", and some really crappy and truly destructive software come and go. Maybe some of you remember when customer support for a piece of software was just a novel idea. You bought it...you're stuck with it. SD is NOT one of those. This is not meant to be a glowing or fawning review. I don't "fall in love" with software. SD is a tool...plain and simple. And a mighty useful one at that. I have no doubt that there are those out there who have had problems with SD (or ANY program) or even misunderstandings regarding licensing. I also have no doubt that many out there had those problems resolved by Yazsoft and never cared to post a follow-up. <<End of rant...realize no one cares... be content anyway.>> [alert admin]

RGB MusicLab 05 (Mac OS X)

Listen to "see" the picture

I found this program quite fun and different. What I did was to take some pictures with a high contrast between the subject and background, close my eyes, and listen to the resulting "music." I found that in my mind's eye I could actually "see" the picture. I have yet to combine any of the midis with GarageBand or anything else. I wonder if a program as this could also be used to catch a glimpse of what people with synaesthesia experience. Just wiki synaesthesia for more info. All-in-all a wonderful experience! I'd like to chain some scenes together, do a little melodic tweaking with GB or other, maybe add some ambient soundscapes and "see" if I can create my own relaxation tracks. So far most of the "music" I've made would be great for subtle and faint background ambient sounds found in many commercial relaxation CDs. Think windchimes and such. A word to the wise: turn your volume down a bit when you first try the program. [alert admin]

Logitech Control Center 1.6.2 (Mac OS X)

Works as Advertised

I've had Logitech mice and keyboards ever since switching from PCs to Mac. They just seem to have the features I need as compared to other brands. I've been using LCC on my Mac steadily because it's the easiest to configure and it supports my hardware. BTW I use an Internet Navigator keyboard and a MX-1000 laser mouse. I've had a Versiontracker subscription ever since owniing a Mac and I've noticed the poor ratings for LCC virtually the entire time. So based on what I've been reading about LCC I'm supposed to "hate" these drivers and try the other third party ones like USBOverdrive and Steermouse, etc.. Well, I tried them and they' work just fine but ultimately I'd always come back to LCC because it's easier to set up my mouse but, more importantly, it's much much easier to set up the extra buttons on my keyboard. I've tried Controllermate and others and, again, it they worked okay. But I always had to have two drivers to support both my mouse and keyboard. So I'm back with LCC. I don't doubt that some of you have had problems with LCC. Probably due to differences in hardware, different resident drivers, not thoroughly cleaning out old mouse drivers, etc. but the sense I'm getting in reading the reviews here is that "Logitech supports Microsoft and leaves Macs in the dust. Therefore we must hate Logitech as we "hate" Microsoft." So, just for the record, LCC works very well for my system and I've had no trouble at all with erratic mouse behavior or any of the issues posted here. If you have a Logitech mouse and/or keyboard give LCC a try. If it doesn't work for you then use the included Uninstall script and get USBOverdrive or some other program as they tend to work too, albeit not as easily.. [alert admin]

Try a CASIO keyboard. It is designed to crank out the type of instant (don't add water!) "music" you were probably expecting.
