VersionTracker Pro 4.5.1 (Mac OS X)

Tech Tracker is replacing VersionTracker Pro

See the first reply on this page: http://forums.cnet.com/5208-21574_102-0.html?threadID=358598 You can find Tech Tracker here: http://www.cnet.com/techtracker/app/ -- Ward P.S. Given the sorry state of VT Pro, I switched to MacUpdate Desktop (beta) a couple of months ago, and I'm glad I did. [alert admin]

TeamViewer 3.6 4892 (Mac OS X)

Looking good for Mac-to-Mac

I've been using VNC for Mac-to-Mac and Mac-to-XP screen sharing for quite some time. The best I can say for VNC is it's free and mostly works, but over the past year, I've been experiencing a lot of connect failures 5 to 30 minutes into a session. I've been experimenting with GoToAssist Express beta, which has great stability. Its downsides are lack of native OS X support and the monthly/yearly fee once beta is over. At the moment, GTAX supports only Window-to-Windows and Window-to-Mac support sessions, i.e., viewer on Windows, shared screen on Windows or Mac OS X. So I have to run GTAX on XP on VMware Fusion. I just discovered TeamViewer. What a pleasure to have stable screen sharing with native OS X support. So far, I've had several problem-free Mac-to-Mac sessions. If Mac-to-Windows works as well, TeamViewer will be a winner. -- Ward [alert admin]

SearchGoogle.service 6 (Mac OS X)

No longer available?

This little wonder has been working great since I installed it over two years ago. Although the description claims 10.3 compatibility, it's working here on 10.5.5. When I revisited this posting before sending it to a friend, and I found the Download and developer links all get a page-not-found (404) error. Perhaps it's a transient problem, and GU.ST will return. [alert admin]

Top-notch image quality

About two years ago, I selected EasyBatchPhoto from a group of contenders. My top priority was image quality. EasyBatchPhoto's adjustable Scaling Quality and Sharpening brought it out on top. The ability to create (and modify) named presets of scaling options is a big time-saver. I've recommended EasyPatchPhoto to two of my clients (both art galleries) for batch processing photos. They're as happy as I am. [alert admin]

OmniDazzle 1.0.2 (Mac OS X)

Both useful and amusing

It's fun to play with all of the dazzling cursor effects. Although many are just for amusement (or adding a surprise to a presentation), I find the Bullseye very helpful in locating my cursor when it's lost somewhere on my three monitors -- shaking the mouse causes a momentary bullseye around the cursor. FMrobot 1.7.1 (Mac OS X)

Essential for copying Custom Functions

I first started using FMrobot 0.8.3 in 2005 to copy Tables (or selected field definitions) from one FileMaker database to another. When table cloning became a built-in FileMaker feature, I stopped using FMrobot because FileMaker was so much easier and faster. But I still miss FMrobot's superior reporting when encountering errors (e.g., references to undefined items). Since FileMaker silently turns undefined references into comments, it's easy to overlook these errors. I'm still using FMrobot, now at 1.7.1 on Mac OS X, because it's the only practical way to copy Custom Functions from one FIleMaker file to another. I have a huge investment in hundreds of Custom Functions, and I can't imagine how I'd manage with raw FileMaker. Copy-n-paste is way too tedious and error-prone. FMrobot loses a star in my rating because the Mac OS X feature set perpetually lags behind the Windows release. [alert admin]

Yank 1.4.1 (Mac OS X)

Dead on Leopard?

I've been relative happy with Yank on various Tiger releases. I just attempted my first use on Leopard, and Yank reports "There was an Unknow error in MainWindows.installButton.ActionMFLog ...." Since "Technical Support is closed until further notice," we're on our own. Has any had a successful Yank recording session on Leopard? [alert admin]

Service Scrubber 1.1.3 (Mac OS X)

Finds applications on a Time Machine backup drive

When I first used Service Scrubber to trim my Services menu a couple of days ago, I was puzzled by some applications appearing more than once in the list. Today there are even more. Looking more closely, I now see that Service Scrubber is scanning my Time Machine backup drive and finding extraneous copies of applications (e.g., Dictionary, Font Book, Mail, Preview, Safari). I hope Service Scrubber has not adversely affected my Time Machine backups. [alert admin]

ABDialer 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Another for the shareware graveyard

When I realized ABDialer was using Rosetta, I wrote to the developer asking about a Universal release or a recommendation for an alternative. The lack of a response was the last nail in the coffin for this otherwise useful application. [alert admin]

Latest Beta is Now Useless for Me

My use of haxies is down to FruitMenu and Menu Master. Thanks for the pointer to Classic Menu. Although I've been a QuicKeys user since the beginning of time, I don't see it as an effective replacement for the simplicity of Menu Master + QK shortcuts don't display in menus or KeyCue.

Scan only the boot volume

I just discovered a Service Scrubber Preference that blocks scanning my Time Machine disk: "Only list service providers that are located on the boot volume" That does the trick for my current Mac Pro configuration. It would not have worked in my former G4, where applications were on the smallish boot volume and another internal drive.

1.1.4 skips signed applications like Mail

Quoting from the Many Tricks blog:

"Service Scrubber 1.1.4 no longer lets you edit signed applications, as introduced by Mac OS X 10.5. This restriction effectively limits Service Scrubber to non-Apple applications and services; but unfortunately, it's a necessary step — at least as of now."

See the blog for more information.

Good idea, frustrating trial

I've had KeyCue running in trial mode for nearly 3 months. The "use it 10 times" trial mode is reset at each Restart of Mac OS X. Since I usually go days or occasionally weeks without restarting, I have long since used up my quota of 10 (by hesitating too long with the finger on the command key) before I really want to see the full list of shortcuts. If KeyCue had a more…
