Picture Arena 1.1 (Mac OS X)

They forgot keyboard control

I'm I crazy or is there really no way to navigate through the files and switch view-modes using the keyboard? Shame for such a promising app. A tree view in the browser and a filter for folders and non-pic files would be great too. [alert admin]

Skype 1.0.0.15 (Mac OS X)

Serious audio shortcomings...

Once you block one or two ears more or less with a headphone, talking becomes uncomfortable. Most people don't realize it but every "normal" phone in the world blends in a fraction of the mic-signal of your own voice into the ear-signal to bypass this discomfort. Although most people block two ears while using Skype with headphones, Skype does not support the "blending feature", which is a serious and very unprofessional shortcoming. Two other sound-enhancing features it lacks are compression, and added fake-noise to overcome the drawbacks of squelching. But this is to much tech-talk for now. Skype should hire a telecom engineer to enhance things like this. [alert admin]

Transmit 3.0 (Mac OS X)

Great update... but,but,but

I love this upgrade, it depends much more on sidebars now tho... Sidebars are apples worst invention ever... If you like to view your apps fullscreen they're hidden, you wont even notice they're there. Some Apps shrink the main window when you fold out a sidebar, but still, it's terrible interface design, why show important options that are part of an app somewhere hanging alongside that app? Being able to use column file-view now is an insanely important new feature, thanks! But (there's always a but) using Apples way of column-viewing it takes up so much space, and invokes scrolling in 2 directions! Whats wrong with the unix/MS way? Just as a nice tree of just folders, with their contents viewed on the right? Also, this app needs to be more keyboard-control friendly. There's no way to get out of the sidebar without using your mouse for instance... One more thing: I just LOVE the preview functions! [alert admin]

Macintosh Explorer X 4.2.1 (Mac OS X)

Useful

Any attempt to come up with something better than the finder should be welcomed, most have to agree the finder isn't that great, and lacking many features even Windows-Explorer offers, like keyboard controlled copy, paste & cut. I like the ideas behind this app. But it's just not very well implemented. Especially the graphics. Aligning of text and icons is just awful. And you can't set a different icon-size for just icon-view. The app has many bugs, like walking (scrolling) up long lists using the keyboard: goes way slower than walking down. And it does not respond to page up/down and home/end keys. Just to name a few... 3 stars for the attempt! And oh ja: please loose the carbon thing, go cocoa! [alert admin]

Audio Hijack Pro 2.1 (Mac OS X)

not improved

The old version had UI issues, but this version isn't better, it just has different issues. I don't like the fact I have to click a button now to switch between input/recording/fx Also the UI lacks flow now. Especially when ussing the app in full screen. IE: the source app-selection is at the right of the screen now, but it should be somwhere in the top of the app. But the most dissapointing thing is that the fact that version 2 STILL lacks pre-recording. This app will never deserve it's "pro" tag as long as it is without pre-recording! [alert admin]

BBEdit 8.0 (Mac OS X)

@ Valx

I switched to Windows for web developing a long time ago, one reason: Homesite. I was hoping for Macromedia porting Homesite to the Mac, or for BB to get better, so I could dump that ugly PC, but I think it won't happen. I must admit that BB-edit features some nice things that Homesite doesn't have. But overall, in basic use it's pretty crippled compared to Homesite and the like. [alert admin]

BBEdit 8.0 (Mac OS X)

Very old fashioned... still

$180 is an awfull lot of money for a bunch of floating Palletes that always get in your way. OK, BBedit FINALLY features a single-document interface, but its a pretty bad implementation. The drawer wont slide into view when you click the drawer button while working fullscreen for instance... And what about a filebrowser pane? Websites use many files, I wanna see the filetree hierarchically next to my document and open and close files groups with ease. Not using drag+drop or 'Open', or that floating browser BB uses: yuk... This is 2004: we all use at least 1024*768, give us some extra tools that don't float, so we can access them instantly! Something else: why wont my cursor move allong when I scroll up and down using the page keys? or is that Apple's fault. Well, At least BB fixed the broken shift+arrow selection. Also: Apple-V wont key-repeat: weird... [alert admin]

Hell froze over... Well, compared to the OS 9 versions :-) On OS X Realplayer is a great app. Version 10 is even better, love it! Thanks! [alert admin]

Great update... but,but,but

Now I remember I was nagging about the sidebars/drawers earlier on in a review allready. Sorry... A guy from Panic commented on this by telling me they use drawers to be able to fit the main window in 600*800. I think that's a good reason, but still, there must be a way to make the functions in the sidebar part of the application window while still supporting a 600*800 resolution.
