SuperCard 4.5 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
I was a Hypercard user just long enough to learn Hypertalk and move on to Supercard 1.0. It was a great product back then and continues to be an outstanding RAD tool. The basic language has been expanded greatly over the years, providing a lot of capabilities. What you cannot do with SC itself can usually be accomplished via and external plug ins, most of which are available as freeware. There is a vibrant and active online community of longtime SC users at your disposal should you have a scripting question (Yahoo group), and most questions are answered there rather rapidly. Improvements of note in this version include: - marked acceleration of script execution speed - text fields with support for rulers, tabs, linespacing, indents, superscript and subscript - improved graphics abilities (apply filters to graphics you import into SC nondestructively, alpha channel support) - the return of "Clickscript", a utility which can simplify scripting simple tasks for newbie users - a vastly improved help system which is easily accessible from within the script editor - extensible help system with new help topics just a download and drag away - enhanced printing control While one person criticized the lack of support for other OS's, I look at this as an advantage. The program is optimized for the Mac alone, provides all the standard OS X features you want and expect, without the compromises introduced by tailoring it "to fit" on some other (inferior) OS. The Mac is great and I understand it -- I have no desire to learn those other OS's just to provide support for them. vinnie [alert admin]
