jBidWatcher 1.0.2 (Mac OS X)
What motivated me to write this review is that just tonight a Paypal auction ended for an item that I wanted quite a bit, but I'd gotten caught up in this and that and totally forgot about it. Fortunately, I'd set JBidWatcher to snipe the auction, and it won the item at a nice price. I do wonder if those who've had problems have read the FAQ: http://www.jbidwatcher.com/help/faq.shtml very helpful, and quickly solved a problem that had cropped up as I was frantically trying to add the bid to JBW. I've been using this app for quite a while now, and it's never failed to do what it was told to. [alert admin]

browseback 1.4.1 (Mac OS X)
Great concept, but doesn't work out ![]()

My review is similar to epc's; though with some difference in detail. I like the company a lot, and am a very satisfied owner of PageSender and Disclabel, but browseback is slow, slow slow to the point of being unusable. I am constantly force-quitting the program because it drags my Dual 2-Ghz G5 down to the point of unusability; Activity Monitor shows BB either taking ~100% of CPU resources, or simply not responding. If I relaunch the application, I'd better do so when I'm about to leave my computer, because BB will then load the pages it missed when it wasn't running, again dragging performance to nothing because of the number of pages it's loading--and sometimes it'll just freeze (the page-loading progress bar not moving at all) so I'll just quit again. A few times, when things worked, the program was very helpful in finding an old page I couldn't find otherwise, but on the whole, I wish I hadn't purchased the program. [alert admin]

Torrent Episode Downloader 0.65 (Mac OS X)
The MPAA has been heavily targeting people who download torrents of TV shows. Keep this in mind before using this application. [alert admin]

Duplicate Image Detector 1.1.1 (Mac OS X)
I have TENS OF THOUSANDS of photos I've created over the years, and organization has become a mess. This application has helped me cull out hundreds already, and I'm still working through my list (note: I've indicated that I've used it for less than a month. That's for v. 1.1.1; I've been using other versions for rather longer). This is one of those great apps I registered within a day of first trying. There were some stability problems with earlier versions--for me, not infrequent quits partway through a LONG detection process (almost 89 thousand photos!!!), but the developer was *extremely* attentive in hunting down and fixing the problem, and it's been fine ever since. The developer has also been very good at accepting and implementing suggestions (and I've made a lot of suggestions); for a 1.x version, it's quite featured and flexible. To address some of the issues raised here (mostly regarding v. 1.01): "The one thing I'd ask for is for the threshold to be adjustable." It has that, even in 1.01 (look under preferences). You can set it to look for a minimum of 0 to 100% match (in 1/100 of a point increments) "ability to open image in default image program with double click" Already there (at least in 1.1.1, and I think earlier versions.) In fact, it even shows the proper icon in the applications! That is, I double-clicked the image, and Preview opened. Then, in Finder, I changed the default application for JPEGs to GraphicCoverter. Duplicate Image Detector immediately changed the icons in the image browser to GC's icons, and double-clicking the image opens it in GC. "ability to delete highlighted image by using just the delete key (as in iTunes)" Well, it has Command-Delete for the right-side image, and Command-option delete for the left. Close enough for me. I prefer using a modifier key, actually--helps avoid unintentional keypresses. "ability to highlight multiple images in list" I'm not sure why you'd use this. You preview ONE image on the left, and compare it to ONE on the right. "ability to use contextual menus" I've used them since 1.01 "ability to use the computer for other things while the program is doing its thing" Admittedly, it's a resource-hog, but there's a setting to reduce CPU use, which helps somewhat. "clarification of "Image 1 Image2" in the image menu...." 1.1.1 clarifies this; it's now "Right Image" and "Left Image" in the menus. Much better. "Making the whole thing more finder-like. (eg, as in RBrowser." In what way? "Default to showing only the duplicated images in the list, after all, that's the point." Added to 1.1.1 (see release notes) "Auto-select the next image in the list after moving the previous one to the trash" Agreed. "For whatever reason, the key commands don't work for me. Cmd-option-D does something with the dock for me, and cmd-d doesn't seem to do anything." A typo in the key equivalents. It was Cmd-option-delete, not "d". Fixed. "Better than that would be a button over each image. I would say a button that says "keep this one" but staying with the way the program works, a "move to trash" button would work just as well." Maybe. I prefer key-equivalents myself. "Option to highlight the image that is the better quality image. Right now I need to look at the pixel dimensions or file size to see which one I want to keep, and in most cases they are identical in size and dimensions." Huh! Coincidentally, I emailed the developer the same suggestion. [alert admin]

ShredIt X 5.6.1 (Mac OS X)
Because of some unrelated problems, I reinstalled my OS a little while ago. Just recently, I used ShreditX to delete some sensitive data, dropping the files onto the application icon. It acted, then informed me that the files had been DELETED and *not* shredded, because ShreditX was not registered. Argh! No warning or anything. It WAS a registered copy, but I hadn't run the application since my OS reinstallation, so the registration information was gone (or that's what I suppose happened). ShreditX didn't tell me it wasn't registered anymore until AFTER deleting (but not shredding) the data. Now the only way to securely delete those files is to devote hours to erasing my free space. What's the point to this demo function? How does simply deleting files/folders demo the software? Just one gaffe like this has turned me off from this application. [alert admin]

LaunchBar 3.2.12 (Mac OS X)
I downloaded LaunchBar and, within an hour of installing it, I paid the shareware fee. I've used a Mac since the late 80's, and I wish I had something like LaunchBar all of these years. [alert admin]

Rather than downloading a full CD, why not create an updater that will utilize an existing Drive Genius CD to burn an updated one? That's what Alsoft does with Diskwarrior. So long as your DW CD can boot on your system (otherwise, you'll need to order a full updated CD), then you just download a <3MB file which creates a new CD using the original DW disk for the boot components.

re: Virusbarrier. I had to bring my G5 in for service, and the tech found a Windows worm in a .jar file by using NAV. No biggie really (can't infect OS X), but VB never detected it. When I got the G5 back, I used VB to scan the whole drive, and it still didn't find it. I downloaded ClamAV, and it easily discovered the problem. Intego's response? They would work on it (VB didn't scan…
