WeatherLink 5.0.4 (Mac OS X)
I agree with the other comments. I've used Davis WeatherLink for several years, and I have found it barely functional. But at least it has worked, in a basic sort of way. However, I have at last upgraded an Intel iMac, and have been trying to transfer my data. The problem is that the version supplied on the CD is WL 5.03, but this version crashes horribly. When I install the bug fix to 5.04 and run it I get the message "This is an upgrade version. You will need to purchase the full version." This can't be right, surely, but I can't work out what I'm doing wrong. The Davis Support people don't reply to questions. So basic software when it works, hopeless installation, and appalling support. [alert admin]

MailSteward 8.0 (Mac OS X)
First, as a piece of email archiving software, I have absolutely no complaints. I have used MailSteward for a year now and have found it to be reliable and easy to use - just what I wanted. So if you are buying this for the first time, fine. However, I agree with the previous two reviewers. The upgrade policy is deceptive. In addition to the advertising about free upgrades, it isn't really obvious that v8.0 is a paid for upgrade. So I installed the update from VT, deleting the old copy as usual - only to discover that it costs $20. To be honest, I wouldn't mind paying the upgrade if the new version was substantially different from the old, but as far as I can tell, it's exactly the same except for a new system of licensing and updating. And even having said that, I would even pay a small sum for that. But to charge $20 largely for the convenience of the developer is a rip-off. [alert admin]

MacJournal 5.0.2 (Mac OS X)
As far as I can tell the latest release cures all the problems I'd been having with 5.01. It works perfectly now. Pity it had been rushed out, but if you've been delaying, delay no more. My only complaint is that the new blue icon isn't as pretty as the old red one, but I suppose we can't have everything. [alert admin]

MacJournal 5.0.1 (Mac OS X)
I have been using MacJournal for three years now, and I love it. I use it primarily as - well, a journal, an electronic diary, but also for keeping track of ideas, notes, plans, and goals. It's a wonderful program; more than that, it's become an essential part of my life. I'm sure I don't use its full power, either - I've never used "Discover wiki links", for example, or audio recording. However, am I alone in discovering version 5.0 to be exceptionally buggy? It crashes all the time. Its behaviour is unpredictable. Some features (e.g. the numbering of lists) just don't work as they should. Support is now patchy; they answer some emails and comment on some bugs, but not all, and it used to be all, by return. My advice, if you have version 4, wait for version 5 to settle down. I wish I hadn't spent money on this upgrade. [alert admin]

NovaMind 4 Express 4.0.11 (Mac OS X)
Best mindmapping software there is for the Mac ![]()

I disagree with the previous reviewer. The interface is a little unMac like, but with software this good and powerful, and at such a bargain price, who cares? I've tried a variety of mindmapping / idea organizing tools for the Mac, and this is head and shoulders above the others. It is extremely easy to use and get started, but is also very powerful with plenty of additional features to keep you busy. You can produce some stunning visuals with it. The support is excellent, and updates are frequent. The product is extremely stable, and the quality of builtin and online help a model for all applications. Don't take my word for it - try the demo. You should also check out the full product, Novamind; there is a good comparison on the site between the different versions. [alert admin]

TubeSock 2.0.3 (Mac OS X)
This product does just says what it says it does: it makes it easy to save YouTube videos to your local drives. Other things might do the same thing for free, but the advantage of this software is that it is extremely easy to use. I haven't noticed any bugs, and yes, they sent me a registration file (NOT a serial number) almost by return. I think it's pretty cheap for what it does. [alert admin]

Jin 2.13.1 (Mac OS X)
There is no perfect application for the Internet Chess Club, in my opinion. Fixation now looks very dated, and the board is ugly. Chessic suffers from the problem that you can't follow games. Jin looks promising, but as others have said, that interface! Underlined letters! And for me at least, (a) games don't save to the pgn file, and (b) the confirm buttons don't work. The final point means that to resign, for example, you have to type resign in the console. However, IF these two points could be sorted out, Jin would be the best of a far-from-perfect bunch. Unison 1.7.7 (Mac OS X)
I've been using Unison for over a year and haven't had any of the problems other uses have reported. It's fast, very stable, simple to configure and use. I've tried Thoth (and other news readers), and found it to be inferior to Unison. I'd definitely recommend this product. [alert admin]

Airfoil 1.0.6 (Mac OS X)
There are PLENTY of uses for Airfoil - we find it most useful for being able to stream UK BBC Radio "Listen again" programmes (which play using RealPlayer) to anywhere in the house (using Airport Expresses connected to hifis). As the BBC only supply a few programmes as podcasts this is something that iTunes can NOT do (yet). The software is perfectly stable and reasonably priced and does just what it says. My only complaint is that it's a little fiddly to use. [alert admin]

Can't help only to say I have exactly the same problem with 10.5.1 and Flash; Safari has become extremely unstable.

Note: The developer is excellent: enthusiastic and fast. They have identified and corrected the bugs that were troubling me. While the non-Mac like interface still grates, I now use Jin as my ICC client. In order of preference, I would rank those clients I know of as: Jin, Chessic, Fixation.
