TeraFractal 2.1 (Mac OS X)

Crashes on 10.4.11 when attempting to export a JPEG

All very impressive, until I try to export the fractal as a JPEG. This is the "default" fractal (seen when you open the app); hit "Cmd-P", tell it to export as "frac" in Documents (or any other filename/folder), hit "Export to JPG" and …

Seems like CoreGraphics isn't happy with what it's being asked to do. This is on 10.4.11 on a dual-core 2GHz MacBook. [alert admin]

LimeWire X 4.14.8 (Mac OS X)

CPU problem is now fixed

Following discussions on the LimeWire forum the "LimeWire starts eating my CPU" problem mentioned here in connection with release 4.14.1 was triggered when a LimeWire installation was running behind a firewall. This appears now to have been fixed (in release 4.14.7, not posted here). Anyone seeing the problem, wihose symptoms are that LimeWire suddenly begins to use large amounts of CPU and memory when running behind a firewall, should upgrade to 4.14.8 or later. Well done to the LimeWire developers for fixing this! [alert admin]

Startrail 1.3 (Mac OS X)

Not only cool, but useful!

The number of times I've lost my cursor, having upgraded from the small screen of a 12" iBook to the massive acres of a 13" MacBook... Now I can just hit "burst" and there's the sparkly thing, showing me where my cursor is. Great stuff! [alert admin]

ScreenMat 1.0 (Mac OS X)

I'm missing something

This seems to do something on my iBook running 10.3.9; the menubar is redrawn when I select an image type. However whatever I've selected from the ScreenMat menu, screenshots are still stored as PDF (and if I launch ScreenMat again the "preferred format" has set itself back to PDF in the menu). Does this not really work on 10.3.9, perhaps? [alert admin]

The Restaurant Game 1.7.1 (Mac OS X)

A Failure on a 12" G3 iBook

Appears to start up on my G3 iBook running 10.3.9, though the screen layout places wgat appear to be control buttons so far over to the left hand side of the screen as to be unreadable. Then it crashes in the image rendering code:

I won't be buying this one when it's released [alert admin]

SerieFoot 1.0.9 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Just keeps on getting better!

The author has now updated it to follow FIFA's rulings on golden goals in the World Cup. Jean-Pierre, anyone who can follow FIFA's changes is a star. If there's an England-France semi-final I'll be cheering for England, but I'll have a little cheer for SerieFoot in any case! By the way, anyone upgrading should be able to copy the "competitions" folder to the new version and start the upgraded app with the previous competitions with no trouble at all (it worked for me upgrading from 1.0.7 to 1.0.8 and now 1.0.9, anyway). JIKANKEI 1.4.2.0 (Mac OS X)

Kind of interesting, but...

it would be nice if there were some way of adding locations. Even a default for UTC would be nice (I have to admit some bias here, I live in London, England :-) ). At the worst if they lived in a .plist file that could be edited manually, perhaps? [alert admin]

CSS Optimizer 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Good stuff

This does exactly what it says on the tin. All this strange talk of "it makes your code unreadable" seems to miss the point of what optimisation actually is. I wonder if the same complaints are made about compilers: "It's made my source code unreadable". ;-)

Think of this as a compiler – you keep your source code for editing but distribute the "compiled" (in this case optimised) version. Anyone wanting to see heavily-optimised code should take a look at Erik Bosrup's excellent tooltip library and compare the "development" version of overtlib.js ("source code") with the "production" (optimised) version overlib_mini.js, which is all but unreadable by humans.

This is good software - kudos to the author!

Dru 0.4.1 (Mac OS X)

I can't make this work at all

I'm missing something here. All bottom-level menu items are greyed out, so File is there but File/New is greyed out. Create, and Create/Basic Shapes are there, but Create/Basic Shapes/Rectangle is greyed out, and so on. Even Quit is greyed out! I'm running 10.3.9 and this supposedly runs on 10.3.x, so what am I missing? [alert admin]

you could use...

True, but the app's README does say Of course, after writing this, Apple released their uuidgen command line tool. While that certainly has its place, UUID Generator provides UUID generation via a GUI, a Service, and in various convenient formats.

Same with 4.14.3

Same here on Mac OS X 10.4.10 running on a MacBook. LimeWire is currently taking up one core of my CPU ("top" is reporting between 101% and 106% CPU usage, i.e. it's taking up an entire core and a bit more). This did not happen with the 4.13 beta version.

Doesn´t work in 10.4.7

This might have been a problem with the way Timer 2 reads your time display preferences. Versions prior to 2.2 only worked if the time display (set via Date & Time->Open International->Formats->Region ) was a "US-style" format, that is, "7:34 PM". This is commonly used in the US, Canada, Australia and others. If a "24 hour" style, ("19:34") was used (as in Europe, Japan, etc) the app failed with a message along the lines of…

Spinning Beachball

Same here (G3 iBook running 10.3.9). I'm also a little sceptical about the "number of charges" rating; my battery appears to have been recharged 104% of the number of charges it supports, yet I'm still getting some 2½ hours of useful life out of it.

A Failure on a 12" G3 iBook

Indeed, and my subsequent comment makes it clear that on re-reading the requirements I now realise this. I repeat: A bit of "check what processor you're running and fail gracefully rather than blowing up with all smoke coming out of the back" code wouldn't come amiss. Simply allowing an app to crash is inelegant in the extreme.

Ah. I just realised it says it requires G4/G5. A bit of "check what processor you're running and fail gracefully rather than blowing up with all smoke coming out of the back" code wouldn't come amiss, though!
