HP OfficeJet G series 4.7.5 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Driver passes tests

Early feedback on the print driver - it does print much more quickly than the prior version - and it seems not to need a reboot after the Mac has had a sleep. This represents such huge progress that I'm giving it 4 stars. The install is still a pain, the previous version having to be uninstalled and the new one installed over the top; it leaves prior version printer options in Print Centre which have to be removed manually, and there's the ten-step set-up questionnaire which needs to be filled in again. But the driver does seem generally to work. [alert admin]

HP OfficeJet G series 4.7.5 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

How to download this driver

I have found a way to download this. HP support simply told me to use the same broken link, which was a bit of a washout.

Having tried various combinations of hardware, OS and browser, including Windoze, I find that Mac OS 9 using NetScape 4.7 will successfully commence the download of this 38Mb of bloatware.

I'd still recommend anyone looking for print drivers to go for gimp-print - their driver is fast and robust. But HP Director remains useful for early warnings of low ink levels. Also, some photos print better with the HP driver. [alert admin]

HP OfficeJet G series 4.7.5 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Download fails

I have strongly criticised the prior versions of this software for being slow, and in failing to work after Sleep, fundamentally flawed. But in this case, reading the few reports below, it seemed like HP might have finally got their act together.

The link is broken so the software isn't even obtainable.

Anyone who hasn't discovered the joys of Gimp_print, search on versiontracker and download their drivers instead. As for HP - I give up. [alert admin]

Kudown 1.1.2 (Mac OS X)

Can only echo…

others' comments - neat and tidy little app which works well. "About" box needs to be updated - v.1.1.2 still says it's 1.1.1. If that's all that can be criticised, then the developer knows they're doing a good job! [alert admin]

VideoLAN client 0.4.6 (Mac OS X)

Donal - your…

link to http://www.dreamfactoryonline.com is broken. If there is indeed a product which would make VLC work, then please post a live link. I just downloaded the thing and it runs, but spins the round rainbow cursor forever.  [Some time later...] OK - I think I can make it work, sort of - it really doesn't like Toast-generated VCDs at all, and if there's a VCD in the drive when VLC is loaded, it hangs until that disc is ejected. But after running a comercial VCD (American Beauty - with Chinese subtitles, no less - and it worked just fine), the Toast one is suddenly readable, if very, very slow - perhaps 2 fps on my new 1GHz PB G4. This is all so disappointing, but hey, 0.5.x is early beta, right? 3 stars this time, to offset the one star I gave it before, because as it stands it's worth 2 since it isn't working with home VCDs. Sort that out, and it may warrant the stellar ratings so many others have given it. By the way, Mplayer doesn't run any of my VCDs. Neelsen - are you straying way off-topic here, or can you make Mplayer play VCDs? [alert admin]

Lisa4ever - if…

you leave or reinstall HP Director, it will have one or two advantages - such as warning when ink is low, and allowing scanning. So, despite its further weighing on system resources, I have actually not got rid of the HP bloatware, retaining it for all the non-printing stuff, but Gimp-print is the default print driver. Hope that may be helpful. [alert admin]

Fetch 4.0.2 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Contrary to so…

many users, I have always found Fetch unstable, both as an OS9 app and now as OS X - for me, version 4.0.2 refuses to transfer any files longer than about 15k ('transfer aborted - insufficient memory or file locked'); it bombs out from time to time; it won't remember the default FTP site; indeed, it won't save the details of any newly entered FTP site; it has wasted my time. If these are all Jaguar problems, or AirPort problems, the website and help files are suspiciously silent. Yuck. Looks like I'd better try a different FTP client. [alert admin]

gimp-print 4.2.4-rc1 (Mac OS X)

Robert - the…

otherwise risible HP driver for the G85 defaults to high quality. (It also used to ask for a default paper size, which OS X promptly over-rode.) But I didn't take a star off, because it was not hard to find where the setting was - and it got me more familiar with the wacky world of the OS X print thread. Thanks for the comments - and for the kick-ass driver! Bryan - heard of AirPort? (Ok, you'll need more kit - sorry not to be more constructive.) [alert admin]

HP OfficeJet G series 4.6.3 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

After installing Gimp…

4.2.4 (using its DeskJet 812c driver) I find it hard to believe I ever bothered with HP's own slow, and ridiculous, bloatware drivers. C'mon HP - rise to the challenge and show those open-source unix geeks what a multinational powerhouse is really capable of. (Or, for starters, never write another driver which has to poll the printer every two seconds, takes days to print a page, and dies after the Mac's been to sleep.) Since my G85 is 99% printer, 1% useful extra bits and bobs, it's bye-bye HP Director, and good riddance. [alert admin]
